@Jim1911,
Thanks for the Bibletime links. I've had good luck with the debian packages at http://packages.debian.org/sid/bibletime. However if I have any problem I'll try the Ubuntu packages at your link. I've never compiled it from source.

I hope to have a 442 final within a couple of weeks. 443 development is going very slowly but hopefully I will have an alpha sometime after, with KDE 4.3, and possibly a new kernel.

@jasmac,
Thank you again for your graphics, they really give Lighthouse Pup a positive identity and look great.

The development add-ons at http://www.lhpup.org/download.htm#dev are about all I can offer. I've only compiled qps and freespace from source (see /root/my-applications/freespace/.) Other more complex attempts also failed. I plan to try Barry's upcoming kernel from Puppy 4.3beta2 which hopefully will have good driver and development support in the future.

I haven't seen the C-F bug you're having. If I can think of anything that might help I'll let you know.

@pudgypup,
Glad your mouse is working. Thanks for the update!

Google Earth 5

#284 Post by nancy reagan »

Hi Tazoc,

As your Google Earth 4 sfs ran well on my puppy 4.1.2 livecd I expected the same with GE 5.

Howeveer whichever installprog I use it is all different. One says "could not load" when I try the next one it says "already loaded".

The other says "succesfully loaded" and then there's no menu entry.

Yes your sfs's are made for your voyagers etc., but as GE4 gave no problem I was wondering why this is with GE5 ?

Hi nancy reagan,
I don't know how to get GE5 working in Puppy. I tried installing Qt4 toolkit and some missing libs, but then I get "symbol lookup error".

Lighthouse Pup includes many updated and extra components that work with KDE and other software. If I knew which are needed maybe I could figure it out, but the GoogleEarth web site was no help for me.

Hi Tazoc,

thank you for your efforts.

If I downed one of your isos can I run them foolproof, i.e. live ?

If yes, how does one load sfs's in your iso's ?

If yes, which distro do you recommend 512 ram ati (don't know what notebook) 5 yr old.

MM Fun etc.

Strange though GE4 out of the box etc.

Nancy,
I use the same method as Official Puppy for merging SFS--create a pup_save, save SFS to '/mnt/home', enable SFS in Bootmanager:SFS Files and reboot.

For a LiveCD you might look at Tipsy Puppy R1 at http://puppylinuxstuff.meownplanet.net/down3.html#tipsy

Movies run, trackball wheel works... cant install Blender !

#288 Post by jade14 »

Tazoc:

Sorry took so long to report but I,ve been away for over a week from my 4.4.2d lighthouse box.

Indeed with the Mariner SFS loaded it plays avi movies just fine...and my Logitech Trackman Wheel works perfectly....

My rig is a Zotac GeForce 9400-ITX board (that integrates a Nvidia 9400 card and miniature WiFi) + Intel Core 2Duo E8400 @ 3.0 Ghz + 4 Gb RAM + Corsair P128 Gb SSD +three fans inside an 8"x 8" case.

Your KDE sfs is a thing of beauty but crashed on me repeatedly after a while (slow cursor response, blank windows and then total collapse). So I switched to LXDE, which has been stable and much better behaved.

My present issue is that I need Blender installed, yet after following the .pet sequence Blender installation described here (that worked like a charm in boxpup/Gallibox)...

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=45015

... I get "Blender" in the GRAPHIC menu, but nothing happens when clicking on it and when running "blender" from LXTerminal I get:

sh-3.00# blender
Compiled with Python version 2.5.2.
'import site' failed; use -v for traceback
Checking for installed Python... No installed Python found.
Only built-in modules are available. Some scripts may not run.
Continuing happily.
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
intern/ghost/intern/GHOST_WindowX11.cpp:177: X11 glxChooseVisual() failed for OpenGL, verify working openGL system!
X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 18 (X_ChangeProperty)
Resource id in failed request: 0x6d207463
Serial number of failed request: 12

Would really welcome any suggestions...

jade14,
Glad LXDE is working well for you. KDE's plasma desktop can be difficult to cure. Thank you for your feedback. I just finished 10 uploads and updated the web site which took several hours in all. (See next post.)

So I need some rest now but I will have a go at Blender tomorrow to see if I can get it to work and let you know.

Distrowatch

#292 Post by tazoc »

Thank you Chris. I'm not sure Lighthouse Pup qualifies as a distribution instead of a PuppyLinux derivative, but I appreciate the listing. I hadn't visited Distrowatch lately and enjoyed reading about Slackware's latest release and the recent LXDE desktops in Lubuntu and OpenSuse.
Take care,

Graphics / Desktop Publishing add-ons

#293 Post by tazoc »

Graphics / Desktop Publishing add-ons (Mariner SFS required)
* Blender-2.49a.sfs 11M Blender 3D Graphics Creation

* Inkscape-0.46-b.sfs 28M Inkscape Scalable vector graphics editor

* Scribus-1.3.3.13.sfs 12M Scribus Desktop Publishing

@jade14,
If you have any problem with Blender, you might need to uninstall some of the related pets earlier installed or start with a fresh pup_save and Mariner SFS. I launched this new Blender from both menus and CL and everything looks good.

No Icons, File Mime not recognized

#294 Post by Bruce_n_Duane »

Downloaded Lighthouse 422d iso and installed on 2 Gig flash drive.
Notebook is Toshiba Satellite A205-S5805

Was running sucessfully for 3 days with Lighthouse iso and 6 sfs files loaded.
KDE, Mariner, OpenOffice, Bibletime, GoggleEarth, and Opera. At startup I always canceled install of mariner and KDE.

I had just changed the screensaver to not be active and rebooted.

The screen came up without the normal icons for the drives, just labels.
ROX did not show the file icons and a message said the background file was unrecognized.

I removed all the sfs files and rebooted and it still did not change. The dialog boxes do not have checkmarks boxes as these are gone. Even the calculator have the text and nothing else. No place to enter and not buttons.

What is causes this. I have been using Puppy Linux since 2005 and have never had this happen.

Also, the first day, I removed the MarinerStartup and KDEStartup from the Autostart and Startup directories. Rebooted and they were there again. It appears that they are magically and automatically put in these directories by other applications. At boot up I must cancel these every time.

When the Icons went away, The ability to cancel installation of Mariner and KDE went away also. They were installed. Saying No was not an option. Even X closing the window would get the software installed.

I thought Linux was about choice, but Linux seems to be following the MS model and removing choice from the user.

I was looking at Lighthouse to replace Ubuntu. I have been using Ubuntu since 2005 when I discovered both Puppy and Ubuntu. Ubuntu 8.04 has become more and more unreliable. I get wifi at many different places and now Ubuntu requires rebooting my computer 2-3 times to link to a wifi access point. Puppy does not because it uses the connect wizard.

What draws me to Lighthouse is Wine, OpenOffice, Firefox, and Bibletime.
These are not in Barry's basic Puppy. The only thing missing is gnucash.

Hi Bruce,
Thank you for trying Lighthouse Pup. I understand it is misbehaving to say the least. I have not seen this myself. The KDE installer is necessary to run Bibletime however it should only run through once. Same with Mariner installer just step through the dialogs as prompted and if they come back again something else is causing this and right now I don't have a clue.

I read somewhere on the forum where settings were not retained in Puppy after a reboot--kind of sounds like this may be the case. Does shutdown seem to work as it should? I mean it it's not freezing and turns off normally? Saving a session to flash can take quite a while prior to shutdown.

Why the icons and buttons would disappear I have no idea. I have not done a good deal of testing with flash drives because the ones I've tried are very slow and I get impatient... By the way be sure to keep the drive that LHP is booting from connected while mounted. I imagine all kinds of errors would result if a drive were disconnected without being unmounted.

If I have any ideas apart from starting anew with a clean pup_save I'll let you know.

Lost Icons

#296 Post by Bruce_n_Duane »

Hi TazOC

I tried some experiments after I sent my previous message.

I renamed the pup_save.2fs file to garbage.2xfs and restarted Lighthouse without any .sfs files. It started normally with icons and file mimes.

This means the problem is in the pup_save.2fs file. There is something in there that causes the file mimes to be lost. FYI: file mimes as I understand them define what a "xx.jpg" file is and how the system is the treat the file and what applications work with it.

2 weeks ago I tried the Base Lighthouse Pup 442 (194M) on a CDROM on a desktop computer that already had puppy 4.2.1 installed. Lighthouse Puppy modified the pup_save.2fs file so that when I booted that puppy on the hard disk, no icons and no file mimes were there.

Is there a backup of the original pup_save.2fs contents so I could compare the two and see what changed. I would like to get that puppy working again and it has my data on it. This might also be a clue as to what happened on my laptop. I did have icons and file mimes and a the lighthouse background. When I exited Lighthouse I did not save the pup_save yet it still had corrupted the Puppy 4.2.1 pup_save.2fs file.

This is a show stopper for me until it is solved.

Regarding flash drives. I have 2 GB of memory on all my computers even the one I built in 2000. So all Puppy's run in memory. I also have 10 GB of swap space on the hard drives of each machine just in case. It may seem overkill when using a 2 GB flash for Lighthouse Puppy. If it gets accepted, it will move to an 8 GB flash and or 10 GB partition on a 250 GB USB drive.

Any suggestion on where to look in the pup_save.2fs file???

Hi Bruce,
I have a few ideas that might help:
Boot from the LHP CD-ROM entering this at the boot menu:

Code: Select all

puppy pfix=fsck
This will check your pup_save for errors and in Lighthouse also checks all Linux partitions that Puppy can see.

If you're running the recommended frugal install, navigate to '/mnt/home' in ROX-Filer and click on 'click-to-verify'. If this file is not present copy it over from your Lighthouse CD-ROM into /mnt/home. It is a simple script that verifies the integrity of the installation using md5sums.

Finally, for the missing icons, copy & paste these lines into a terminal (use Glipper or Klipper in the system tray if a middle click doesn't paste):

Code: Select all

update-desktop-database
update-mime-database /usr/share/mime
cp -f /initrd/pup_ro2/usr/share/mime/globs /usr/share/mime/
(The first two lines only work in LHP if KDE is installed. I may move them to the base ISO in the future. Disregard 'Unknown media type' messages from the second command.)
Then restart X.

I also recommend booting from the CD-ROM entering 'puppy pfix=ram', then backup your pup_save.2fs on a regular basis, and prior to any new install.

Hope that helps,
TazOC

Hi Tazok,

Just downloaded and ran a copy of your final (w/mariner) from CD on a friend's computer. It runs great. I'm away for a few weeks so it'll be awhile before I can run it on my computer.

Thanks again,
Jim
