Using VLC on a Dell GX110 and it solved a 640x480 full screen flash with gxine on official 431. audio was super, as was video on a Nova future car broadcast via web TV. Appreciate all the work you did to accomplish that performance.

Coupla questions,
a) How could I make it a default player in 431?
-
b) Is it possible to couple VLC to streaming Pup or WebTV for the channel changing features?

There is considerable problems with Menus on 640x480 and while trying to search for controls of Menus, found that the channel changing technique for the above was small executable text files pointing to gxine.
Can something like this technique work for VLC since it has at least two types of stream selections for TV?

I am using a 640x480 scanconverter to 525 line and really need a JWM menu solution also. Would you know of a menu flow chart or location directory names and templates?
It should be easy to correct with a set of XDG templates for all the menus, but so many are obscurely located, in my humble opinion this is a real problem, as have had the same situations trying puppy on laptops.
As an aside, MS doesn't do it much better either, as have some .net applications where the buttons can't be reached in 640 mode.

Thank you for VLC 8.6h
jay
-The xdg menus are located at /etc/xdg/menus

-To make vlc default edit /usr/local/bin/defaultmediaplayer change it from
exec gxineshell "$@"
to
exec vlc "$@"

I never tried streaming videos, maybe others can help.
Most the time I compile stuff, release it and move on to the next compile, I do use vlc for watching movies on my wide screen tv, but that's about all i use it for. Not enough hours in a day to get well rounded with all the apps I compile, lol
I still haven't found a better low resource equipped video player than this package. If you figure anything out please inform us on your results. So others might find it handy also :)

I use Ttuuxxxs' Vlc8.6 lite as my default media player.
It's the best I've found!!
Only uses 1/2 the cpu and 15mb less ram then Gxine.
Even uses less when playing audio compared to Aqualung.
Lets me listen to my local npr station at 128 kps win media.
Doesn't have the title skipping problems that mplayer has
when playing dvds'.

I have mms streams enabled in Seamonkey about:config,
that lets me watch many live steams at Delicast.com, including
all 4 NASA channels.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

Hi

Performed default edit, thank you for such prompt answers

Experimenting with selecting urls - mms and rtsp and notice that video doesn't respond to rtsp , gxine will display video

Known good test url that plays audio and video in gxine -
only audio in vlc

rtsp://media1.abc.net.au/broadbandkids/20070702_1500/story1hi.rmI'

so far mms urls operate OK

Suspect problem is an internal setting or missing codec, but look forward to your analysis.

Thank you
jay

Only time I ever had rtsp enabled was with realplayer to
check out BBC audio streams.

I have so much BBC on radio, tv and internet that I don't bother
with realplayer anymore.

This was how I did it:

Here is another way of listening to BBC Radio programmes
both Live & Listen Again

First of all, you will need to do this:

In seamonkey
type in the address bar: about:config

click on the button: I understand and wish to continue

Seamonkey displays all of its configuration variables.
You will need to add one for rtsp.
So right click on any item.
Select: new --> string
Now add this: network.protocol-handler.app.rtsp
click OK
In the next window add the path to your realplay file,
mine is located here: /usr/local/RealPlayer-11/realplay
click OK

Now restart Seamonkey,
and go here: beebotron.org and test some of the links.

When you first try, an "External Protocol Request" window will open,
just click on the "Launch application" button.
If things play in realplayer as expected,
then next time you can check the box next to: Remember my choice for all links of this type.

In Realplayer, you can then add the Live Radio links to Favorites.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.

As long as I have your Htop, Gtkhash, and Vlc, I'm a happy-camper.

Gxine with rtsp enabled is fine for the rare occasion I would need
it. Seems "geared" toward the needs of Brits and Aussies.

Edit;
Way cool and far-out Ttuuxxx.
Only have to click sro for the dvd to play with this new version!

open a terminal and type
vlc --help-verbose
then play your divx and view the log and copy the part where it crashes, and let us know what failed. I never had a issue with divx movies on this vlc, it does use the built in puppy ffmpeg, so it might be ffmpeg at fault.

I tried finding my old notes and wasn't able to locate them sorry, If I ever do come across them, I'll post them. I have well over 1TB of linux data on my hard drives and trying to find on code from 1.5yrs ago is like a needle in a hay stack.

vlc player and pvr

#277 Post by MeKino »

Hi,

I have installed vlc successfully but when I try to view input from my video card using the pvr option I get the error message "unable to open 'pvr://'".

I'm not sure that puppy is recognising my video card... or is it something else?

Thanks in advance.

Well... I eventually managed to view tv by downloading the file on this link:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 79&t=16727

All I need to do now is set it up to record...

I loaded 8.6 under Puppy 4.31, as well as the wmediaplayer.pet and vlcDefault.pet

When I click on MENU-Multimedia-VLC it asks me to "Open a Skin" and pops up a directory.

Now what, please?

I am told this will meet a critical need our son has for an online college course that began today - so I am anxious to get it running!

just uninstall wmediaplayer.pet and the menu vlc should work.
There was issues with skins2 so I removed it from later updated releases.
