To fake a fresh install of Pbackup, you could delete the directory /root/.pbackup. Hope that will help you. Have you any idea what lead to this behaviour?

I am not sure what happened. I was busy with so many things that something I probably touched caused it. Your solution worked though. I deleted that folder /root/.pbackup and then reinstalled and it loaded up immediately.

Thanks to all for the help.

Can't Find Pbackup Log File

I am getting an error syncing 2 directories and can't find where the logfile is that gives more information on the error.

That is an irritating bug, I should have solved for a long time....The log is not showing up in the finish/error box.

The log is saved in
/root/.pbackup/tmp/pupbck-log

Yes thanks haha. I bought a motherboard with a built in raid controller and you might figure it would automatically run a mirror but no it doesn't so I'm trying both pbackup and pmirror to set it up. Not sure which one will do the job better so doing some tests right now and since that error log didn't show up like you said with a simple button click then I will search the location you mentioned..

Thanks again. I will post my results...

/root/.pbackup/tmp has no files in it even though pbackup notifies of an error and hasn't run on the schedule again since that error is listed on the pbackup main screen.

The only thing in the /root.pbackup/tmp folder is a subfolder named pbackupSYNC which is empty also

Hmmm it's getting interesting now. I wonder what is causing the error.

file limit?

I have a machine I want to reinstall, but before I do I wanted to back it up. The current linux is hosed, but a quick boot with a 4.3.1 CD allows me access to all of the files, currently in /mnt/home. I have a 1.5T hard drive (formatted in NTFS, unfortunately, and I really don't want to reformat for this) connected via USB as /mnt/sdc1.

I've set up a full backup of /mnt/home targed to HD /mnt/sdc1. When I run the backup, the pupbck-files, -dirs, and -links files look fine in geany (although pupback-files is 51M...), but the backup stalls after creating the first directory structure /mnt/sdc1/20100730_backup/Backup_2010-08-01_13.04.49/mnt and hangs there...the other day, I let it go overnight and no other directories or files were added. (FWIW, /mnt/home/mnt/ is empty, so <<backup>>/mnt should be, too.)

Is there a hard limit on number of files for pbackup? Is it having a canary writing to the NTFS drive? Is it just my bad karma? I know I can use tar to get where I need to go, but pbackup looked so slick...

I have stopped the evolving of Pbackup. - 2 years since last update.
This version is just a quick fix to get it going with the latest gtkdialog.
The code is in such a bad shape that Puppy should get a new backup program. - Your challenge!!!!

Problem running pbackup on slacko

Hello

I'm trying to use pbackup on slacko 5.3.2.8 to backup a directory on one harddisk to a directory on a 2nd harddisk.

I've set it all up and done a full backup which is reported as being successful but there is nothing in the backup directory - see screenie attached.

I've checked through all the settings and cannot see what I'm doing wrong.

Both disks are ntfs formatted - would that matter??

Many thanks for any help anybody can give.

Cheers

I don't use pbackup but...

There's a file called 'config' that holds the needed settings for
the app mirdir that Zigbert uses. I would speculate that
the file 'config' was damaged somehow. Maybe your partition was
filed up when config was being written to and the file couldn't be
saved?? Just a guess.

I recommend my fork of pmirror. I've spent the last couple of weeks
fixing it up.

I tried pbackup and the two key files seem to be

/root/.pbackup/tmp/pbackup-tmp
/root/.pbackup/profiles/Pbackup_default

pBackup recent backing up complete

Posted: Tue 19 Aug 2014, 06:48
by charlie6
Hi Sigmund,

Am i missing something in using of pbackup ...?

Using pbackup-3.1.9 on dpup wheezy to a dvd (on sr1):
after having done a complete backup of my sda6 partition (vfat), further «recent» backup are backing up «complete»; as also through the Inspection simulation which right shows the recent modified files to be backed-up, but instead backs up «complete» once pressed the «Finished» button ... :?:

Here are the first lines of the Log:
that log has all the files of the to be backed up partition, wheres the inspection log showed only about 20 files (which is realistic as far as i remember the number of modifies/saved files for two days time).
/mnt/sda6/ ...
...searching files...
...searching directories...
mount: block device /dev/sr1 is write-protected, mounting read-only
Executing 'genisoimage -C 16,1730000 -M /dev/fd/3 -R -f -D -graft-points Backup_2014-08-17---2014-08-19_08.22.30/mnt/sda6/=/mnt/sda6/ | builtin_dd of=/dev/sr1 obs=32k seek=108125'
Warning: -follow-links does not always work correctly; be careful.
I: -input-charset not specified, using utf-8 (detected in locale settings)
Rock Ridge signatures found
Using ABIWO000.PET;1 for /mnt/sda6/Abiword/abiw...

Another thing: see screenshot
I suspect my dvd to ran out of space, what is confirmed by the warning box ... which tells «the temporary storage» to be too small: i dug several times around to find a large enough partition and to run pbackup again, before being aware the dvd disc to be full ... :?
ps: ...yeeeah ! «Log may hold more information»

Thanks for any answer !
Greetings, Charlie

Backup recent

Posted: Thu 21 Aug 2014, 07:32
by charlie6
Hi,
@Sigmund:
then, thanks for your job !

So here "Backup recent" keeps burning the whole partition even the day after the first backup ... on CD/DVD.

Files to be saved are in /root/.pbackup/tmp/pupbck-files and are though correctly identified as the "recent" files since last backup.

I've tried to dig into the code to see where the burning command lies, for a first understanding on "how it works"; and did not find the pupbck-files file in the growisofs command lines;
nor in the = GROWISOFS = section of /usr/local/pbackup/pbackup;
but well in its = COPY TO HD = section (tested: "Backup recent" works nice as expected if saving to an HD :) ).

So i wonder if "Backup recent" to a CD/DVD would be still among a todo list ... :?

Thanks for any comment
Charlie

If things stick to the plan, we will get a new pBackup during the winter.
All burning will be pointed to pBurn which is now flexible and stable to do that task.
Scheduling will be pointed to pSchedule.
File searching will be pointed to pFilesearch.

I have tried to dig into the pBackup code (my own code), and I find it hopeless. - I don't understand the dataflow... :)
A complete rewrite is required !
