"1. Validate the burn?"
No, but then I never do, and normally it is ALWAYS a good burn.
Never had a bad burn.

"2. At the prompt type in full "puppy pfix=ram" (without the quotes)?"
Yes.

I've seen this before when booting from USB stick. In that case it was a timing issue, where some USB sticks would show the problem, and others did not.

Not sure about CD's though. Haven't used these for years.

With pnethood 0.6.8, when i copy a file to the remote folder, an error occurs:
I posted the issue at first on 03 Dec 2010.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 451#473451
Copying /mnt/sda3/tmp/some.txt as /mnt/network/SHINOBAR/video/public/tmp/some.txt
cp: failed to preserve ownership for `/mnt/network/SHINOBAR/video/public/tmp/some.txt': Permission denied
Failed to copy '/mnt/sda3/tmp/some.txt'
Actually, the file is copied successfully. The problem is only the error message.

Solution:
pnethood-0.7.1.pet

Good morning Sylvander,

I am still of the opinion that your issue could be caused by a bad burn due to faulty optical media. This could give the symptoms you describe, which as Volhout has commented is akin to a timing problem. (Either the main sfs cannot be found or is reported as “not found

I normally always use CD-RW->4x or DVD+RW->4x.
They always work OK.
Made a 2nd CD-RW->4x copy of "lupu-5.2.8.6-20131004.iso" by 1st blanking, then reburning, the CD-RW of "luci-001.005.iso" made recently and booting OK.
This is a known functioning CD-RW.
I opted to test the burn.
It failed [as they have always failed, yet are always fully functioning CD's].

HI Sylvander,

Try out each of these boot codes:

1. puppy acpi=on

2. puppy acpi=off

Tried each in turn.
Neither made any change/improvement. :(
SFS file still not found.

What program are you using to burn iso images?
The burn test should not be giving failed results, if the program is working properly.

A type disc CD/DVD R or RW (+ or - ) support issue with the burner device?

I find that sticking my tongue, slightly out the left side of my mouth, while burning iso files seems to help. Right side optional. :D

Hi Sylvander,
I have burned the ISO to a DVD-R and booted successfully on a net-book using an external USB connected DVD writer. The implication is that this build may have a problem booting from anything that is RW.
May I suggest that you also burn a DVD-R or CD-R and try again? I do not suspect hardware as you have successfully booted other pups from RW media.

For what it's worth, I burned the latest 5.2.8.6 20131004 to a memorex cd-r and have successfully booted 5 different machines up to a hexacore w/ 16 gb of ram. No problems on any hardware so far.

Been doing a little testing but no problems so haven't been posting. But since I'm here.........

Hello, people.

Can somebody validate that, in lupu-5.2.8.6,
* du is not working correctly
* a lot of the pdf* utilities in /usr/bin are missing some libraries?

I've experienced those problems and solved them, but if I'm the only one
experiencing them, I'll go find a therapist  instead of providing an upgrade
package. Sounds logical, eh? :)

Thanks in advance.

Burniso2cd.

2.

Burned a Panasonic CD-R.
It failed to boot just the same as the CD-RW's.
Unable to find the SFS file.
1 disk bites the dust [as I was sure it would]. :(
My guess is the kernel of this Puppy doesn't include drivers for my hardware, but I'm no Puppy expert.
I've seen this before; some Puppies work with my hardware, and others don't.
That's the problem I've had with Lupu->[which once was my number-1 Puppy] [and others] since I got this new hardware.

The previous version didn't.(
Could you give us the specs of this computer.

Burniso2cd failing burn tests is not normal operation for this program. What is causing this is something to try and figure out.

One thing to consider:
flash wrote:Testing has shown that burning too slow works as bad as burning too fast. For best results, go for the middle of the burning speed range of the burner or the disk, whichever is slowest. For instance, you'll probably get best results burning an 8x disk at 4x, not 1x.

Burniso2cd appears to automatically choose/set the burn speed.
CD-RW: It's shown auto-set to 10x, but then burns at 4x [disk speed=4x].
CD-R: It burned at around 16x [disk speed=1x-48x].

@Sylvander: Does your system have any old Lupu 528 components, like savefiles, hanging around? They could be confusing this new Lupu's search procedure.
Burniso2cd appears to automatically choose/set the burn speed.
That's one of the numerous problems with burniso2cd. It doesn't have an "auto" speed setting that lets the burner pick its own preferred speed.

No.
I just now searched the only mounted partition for any files with "lupu" in their name.
The only item found is the empty 04-lupu folder I made in preparation for holding the "lupusave.?fs" file I intended to make, but didn't get that far.
Before making that folder I had checked that there were no existing "lupu" folders or files.
So I expect there should have been no problem of that kind.
Not unless "luci" files would cause a problem.

Sylvander,

I would search all partitions, mounted or not mounted.

Have you tried to boot using option puppy pfix=ram?

Driver support for your TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH222BB DVD drive could be the issue.
Did a Google search. Seems to be a really hard thing to find out any info about Linux drivers for it.

Have you tried to install to a USB flash drive and boot with it?

Done.
Mounted all partitions, and searched them.
Result was the same as before = only found the 1 empty folder.

2.
bigpup wrote:Have you tried to boot using option puppy pfix=ram?
I believe I did; will try again to make sure.

DONE, it made no difference. :(

Seems likely to me.

4.
bigpup wrote:Have you tried to install to a USB flash drive and boot with it?
Not so far, but will try that [if possible] and report back.
SUCCESS!
a. Using ROX, I couldn't mount the ISO file [stored on an external HDD] whilst working within Precise-5.6.1, so copied the files from the CD-RW to the FAT32 partition [with boot flag set] on an 8GB Flash Drive, and installed grub4dos.
b. It booted just fine, and is looking good [I'm typing this from it], EXCEPT...
c. There are no icons on the desktop for the partition-file-systems on my SATA->[internal HDD, or optical drive].
The Flash Drive partition shows up [as sda1].
Plus...
The partitions [3] on my USB connected external HDD's [2] show up OK.

That probably explains why you can't boot off the CD. This Lupu is missing the drivers needed to see these devices.

[Edit] However, this Lupu can find my SATA hard drive OK.
