I've never played with this, but

Code: Select all

x11vnc --help
in the terminal brings up an encyclopedia of information. I don't see an upgrade available in Slackware 14.1, so I would presume there is not a version conflict between the stock x11vnc in lighthouse and any upgraded processes I've included. I know lighthouse itself is persnickety about giving out ip info. Try it with kde loaded and unloaded to see if there is a difference.

...later... I ran x11vnc.desktop (exec x11vnc-gui) from the menu and it does identify the ip after supplying a password (woofwoof). I've only got the browser and Kpython7.5-qt4.8.5-x86_64.sfs loaded.

@edoc, If your machine can boot usb-uefi, go that route. I limit the iso to <700M for those of us who can only boot from a cd/dvd and only have a cd available. Despite the language in the scripts, there is no save session to cd (It's dvd) but you can run a live cd just the same. USB_live works very well, as does usb_session-save. I've included that option in the grub menu.

@Edoc, I sure you and others know this, but, I have ONLY used DVDs for system boots and savesessions for all the years of LightHouse64/Just-LightHouse64 use on either BIOS/UEFI PCs. Never have filled nor never had integrity problems in use. DVD performance beats CD performance...hands down, for these use.

Hope this is useful info.

Problem encountered
The ISO downloaded and md5 checksum verified. DVD burned via PBurn and checksum of DVD verified, too. The DVD boots on Intel UEFI without issues.

BUT, when DVD booted on my AMD BIOS X2 PC, I am getting halts in booting with "red" JL-602.sfs not found. The boot process stops at this message.

Anyone else having a boot time halt on a BIOS based PC with the latest test JLH?

Isolinux.cfg menu, first run/dvd should be menu #3 or #3b,
which specify pmedia=cd. USB is #4 or 4b. Otherwise, the hard drive
will be searched for a base file and zwine. If this doesn't work, enter
the menu (I think you press "b") and change 'pmenu=cd' to 'pmenu=dvd',
although I don't think that is necessary.

First, on DVD boot issues.
I grabbed a DVD+R (vs RW) to burned & verified ISO to it. Then, on my 1GB Intel PC, I booted to observe behavior. Booted fine.

Have not had time to check the X2. Understandably, the media is locked currently, but as soon as I can, after some testing, I will shutdown and attempt boot media in the X2.

Trying to sort whether I am experiencing) media problems (erasing and re-recording a DVD+RW) or if this is ISO's problem on BIOS AMDs. (I do not have a UEFI AMD at this time to test).

Testing on 1GB PC
Booted fine

spot

#247 Post by Dry Falls »

Remember? It's the same as before. Browsers run from the menu run as spot. From the wbar, they run as root. Mozilla browsers need a save-session and frugal symlink or move the /spot/.mozilla directory so that a profile can be created. See the readme in the opening post or link from the 3.18.8 iso. The change is not in lighthouse, but in mozilla itself. Dillo and konqueror will work as spot first-run. It's just the mozilla browsers. It's a matter of the sfs (including the base file) being interpreted as read-only. When you move the mozilla directory (save and restarat x) it moves to pup_rw and the build system is satisfied.

readme is updated for this release here:

spot

#248 Post by Dry Falls »

Ok, I've completely removed Spot's .mozilla directory in a test JL64-602.sfs and now all the browsers will load (from the menu, as spot) first-run. The downside is none of Tazoc's customizations are available. Mozilla builds it's own .mozilla directory first-run. Still don't understand why it works under root except that spot doesn't have permission to make system changes. Give it permission and it defeats the whole purpose. Frankly, I never run as spot.

I'll bring back the profile.sfs with the original spot mozilla directory (configs for firefox, icecat & seamonkey) just to keep the option open and preserve a bit of lighthouse history in the next build.

I forget ... how do I tell Just-LH64 to always run as root by default?

Thanks.

You don't need to. All the window managers but kde, which is truly multiuser (and not just a little schizoid) run as root. As I understand, spot was originally designed just to run internet applications, and not much more. Au contraire. You have to tell it NOT to run as root, if that is your desire.

So that's a change from the original Lighthouse-64 which runs as Spot by default?

I'm forever having to stop and change permissions on a folder so that I can save a download on this old install.

Just loaded the latest Just-LH64 (MARINER 602B2) on a laptop (I'll call it #1) and still cannot see the Brother HL-2275DW printer that this one can.

I have observed that the laptop (#2 running Carolina) that was on that desk, and is now elsewhere, "controls" that printer.

What I mean is that if laptop #2 isn't powered on and connected (wired or wirelessly) to the network then no computer can see the printer.

NOTE: The printer is connected to the ASUS router's printer port and not to the laptop.

Laptop #3 (this one, running the old LH64-602b) can see the printer fine.

I don't get what's happening here at all.

@edoc, this is a problem. Had you installed any printer drivers in your L64-602 (original)? Does it identify the printer on first run? The only thing I've changed in that department is upgrading cups to 1.5.4. I've installed the correct drivers for my canon mx420 plugged directly into the computer or router to no avail either. Pupscan Hardware Interface identifies it but that's as far as I get. NSF and gparted will find the usb stick plugged into the printer, but nothing will let you see the contents.

It could be that I've removed systemd which Samba requires. Eudev does a good work-around for everything else, right down to kde and xfce apps which normally require avahi/systemd to recognize and mount drives, if not initiate the desktop (I've rebuilt kde/xfce without sysd etc altogether). It could also be a bum kernel configuration (one little parameter amidst 6,000+ lines of configuration choices).

But the printer? I'd really like some help here as well. I just don't know or understand enough in the area of hardware and networking. Ie., I'm really stumped on this one. It's probably something simple, and I'll look even dumber than I feel. But maybe something is really broken.

I finally found a little free time to try this. :)

Before I did the manual frugal install I'm running now I booted a cd in 2 older AMD boxes with traditional bios.Zero problems booting from the cd .... a couple of boots on each box.

The first thing I did was make SeaMonkey run as root from the menu.Other than my drive icons stacking up one atop the other( 2 drives and about 25 partitions) things are looking pretty solid.

Time to explore a bit more.

Good job.

Thanks @James C.

Really appreciate that. Seem, then, my issues are with my local AMD Desktop PCs. Hummm???

Question @James C
  • Is that PC you show a UEFI PC or a BIOS based one?
Thanks in advance

Thought I'd do a quick live test run on a UEFI box. i build my own so it's UEFI but no "secure boot".

No real problems in this quick test.

I've found some missing dependencies for the cups/samba upgades (gnutls), and some static libraries. In the process of configuring the canon with cups (finally, I can 'add printer!). The cannon is now registered (I'd already installed the drivers, but it looks like I didn't need to with the firmware in the new kernel modules). Doesn't hurt, though. Anyway, everything's a go except that it won't print a test page.

I've got the printer attached by both usb port and ethernet cable to the router. First cups error message mentioned wrong permissions, access denied. It reports user=anonymous. Changed permissions: allow user anonymous, and now no error message, but still no print. The last step is to plow through the /var/log/cups and var/spool directories.

I'm hopeful for a resolution for this soon. When it does, I'll remaster. Unfortunately, all this adds about 10M to the base file, even with moving locale, info, doc & man to the documentation/nls files.
