Just coz you asked...Inkscape for Dpup...
Thanks for that.

On Jim's problem, when I made the patch for Conrol Panel for wbar I call "pcp3"... should it be "pcp3-wrappper"? I ran both in terminal and I have no immediate apparent differences... but there must be a difference, what is it? :?

I am running frugal and if I change the icons from control panel called from wbar the change sticks after a reboot. If I need to change the patch let me know and I can have it done in a jiffy. I haven't enough available drivespace atm to test a full install.

Cheers

edit: ok the wrapper incarnation is a calling script... ok will change the patch.. but will it fix Jim's issue? Patch will be up in 5 mins. (5 min later) patch is up.

Mick

The Dpup Control Panel(pcp3) is run as a service, by the pcp3-wrapper script...if you don't use the wrapper, it will keep opening new instances, instead of just re-awaking the service...saves memory and time.

Thanks for explanation Guy.

New patch is up, as usual on the first page.

Do you think it will fix Jim's issue?

I actually don't know, Mick, i'll have to investigate, it appears to be OK in my full install, but I haven't rebooted for over 10 days...so i'll have to check.

Mick and Jim...

I can confirm that Jim's problem does exist on full install...i'll get onto it and include the fix in our little Service Pack pet i'm building...

Thanks Jim for that catch...I can't be everywhere, and by testing we get better... :)

Cheers

Shiraz is nice red on a hot day, but I miss the Concord wine, it was inexpensive in Canada and real nice, Here's the one I'm talking about
http://www.wallywine.com/p-13310-manisc ... m-15l.aspx
$11.99 a 1.5L bottle :) Yes its a kosher wine, I'm not jewish but doesn't mean that my taste-buds can't appreciate it
Can't find it anywhere in Australia that delivers. Grrrr
Tried one other Concord wine here that you can get at the shop, but the quality was very poor. Guess I'll wait another year or so until I go back to Canada for a trip.

Some prelim testing of sfs_linker

Tried BK's open office 3.1.1 . Got menu entries. They failed to work. The symlinks existed in /usr/local/sbin but they pointed to /mnt/sdaX/openofices311.sfs/opt/Openoffice3/program/scalc (or whatever app, swriter etc). Since the app is basically "installed" I would have thought the links would point to /opt/Openoffice3/program/scalc. I don't know. Anyway, the menu entries pointed to /usr/local/bin/s* . I think it may be because BK has symlinks in his sfs???

Running the full path from a terminal the apps all worked.

The kernel source was a different story. It installed fine, but then I had no browser. I was going to compile a driver and grab the source. There was an error message about running out of space, but my pupsave is fine. I recovered by checking the filesystem after a reboot. Scary. I did have the devx already loaded, it always is... would that make a difference?

Undeterred, I will try more sfs files.

Cheers

Poor appearance of fonts

#249 Post by Terryphi »

I've tried Dpup482-beta5 but all the fonts do not appear as clearly as they do in Puppy 4.3.1. Can anyone suggest why this is?

Hello, Terryphi!

Have you checked if dpup has the same fonts as 4.31?
In every Puppy, the fonts are in /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF

If you put some new fonts there, such as the Liberation fonts, etc.
don't forget to issue the following command in a console to rebuild the font cache:

fc-cache

There's a nice variety of fonts here, among lots of other places:
http://puppylover.netsons.org/dokupuppy/programs:fonts

There is a font thread here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 52&t=37847

On the subject of clarity, I think there was a discussion of this problem in the dpup-482beta testing thread (the previous dpup thread).

BFN.

Hi, gang.

I reinstated my production system with beta 4, and decided to test beta 5 exclusively on DVD. It might give a particular angle, too, who knows.

So, back in the saddle... hunting the "little headaches", as gposil so elegantly put it a few pages back. And speaking of the devil...

@gposil:
1) rgb.txt should be in /etc/X11, not in usr/share/X11 !! Otherwise gcolor2 does not see the handy list of ready made colours.

2) typing "nano" in a console doesn't do anything. May I suggest a soft-link from /usr/sbin/runano to /usr/sbin/nano.

And maybe it wouldn't hurt either if nano's window was a bit larger and the colours more interesting, something like, in the "runano" script:

# rxvt -fn 9x15 -title "nano 2.1.11" -geometry 80x30+340+340 -bg "#08284A" -fg cornsilk -e nano-tiny -D &
# Alternate darker backgrounds could be:
# -bg firebrick4
# -bg "midnight blue"

The geometry above will put nano pretty much in the middle of the screen, 80 columns wide, 30 lines deep. Nice!

To all:
I have version 2.0.7, which allows these parameters:
# rxvt -fn 9x15 -title "nano 2.0.7" -geometry 80x30+340+340 -bg "#08284A" -fg cornsilk -e nano -D -B -F -H -Q -T 5 -W -i -m &

-B for backup,
-F for multibuffer,
-m for mouse, etc.

Do a nano -h, and all the possible parameters will appear. I'm getting hooked on the little thing.

BFN.

But i do not fully agree that these have to be started from .xinitrc. if you want to start 'special' apps for your 'special' environment, it would be better to try to use a startup-script. then you would have a clear structure and no one has to search afterwards, why things act 'funny'.

I tested lauching fbpanel, for example from such a startup-script, and actually it runs better than launched from the .xinitrc file. All the fbpanel icons appear correctly when it is launched from a startup-script.

Hmmmm

Some more consequences from using sfs_linker with the kernel source.. (maybe it was a bit ambitious  ).

-Gtkdialog3 was broken, found out when I went to shutdown.. restored from /initrd/pup_ro2. Just maybe, it may have broke because we use Gtkdialog with a symlink from Gtkdialog3 whereas a standard Puppy uses it the other way around. What I ended up with was 2 broken symlinks! That may have been caused by the Ooo sfs, it was made for 4.3x after all. Or, possibly by sfs_linker itself, I can't see the kernel source needing gtkdialog for anything.

-Downloads in Firefox are broken, still under investigation.

I have spare Pupsave so no real drama, but I'll keep using this one just for the purpose of seeing what broke, and seeing if it can be fixed.

Cheers
