Hi Barburo,
I rebooted into 412f and could not reproduce text errors in FF or tkhearts. I haven't seen this but I agree it could be graphics driver related. Maybe try another option in xorgwizard and see if that makes any difference.

The only other thing I can suggest is copy and paste these commands into a terminal:

Code: Select all

modprobe nls_cp850
modprobe nls_utf8
Then restart X and see if it makes any difference. These lines are in the new initrd.gz for LHP412f and 442c I just posted.

Lighthouse 4.42c / JWM problem: How to change icons at top?

#242 Post by k7aay »

There's a row of icons at the top of the desktop I'd like to change (see icons above red line in attached photo). I can't find anything which lets me, nor can I find how to change the menu which launches from the Menu button at lower left. How do I change those?

Thank you greatly.

wbar, LXPanel tips

#243 Post by tazoc »

Hi k7aay,
Thank you for trying Lighthouse Pup. Good questions... The icons at the top is 'wbar'. It usually doesn't show until I click on the desktop--no idea why. And I can't get it to work in LXDE without Compiz-Fusion. Its configuration file is '/root/.wbar'. Open it with a text editor. All I know about wbar (which isn't much) is in the comments near the top of that file. I don't know exactly what lines 8-10 are for, I haven't changed them. Each set of 3 lines below are for one icon on wbar starting with leftmost.

In the latest version of LHP wbar is launched from the script '/Startup/wbar'. You can also open that with a text editor for changing settings such as '-pos' <top>|<bottom> of screen. Previous versions are launched from /root/.xinitrc, (near the bottom of that script.) Finally the binary is located at /usr/bin/wbar and a few other files are at /usr/share/wbar.

In LXDE the task bar controls, incl. position, alignment, size, etc. for LXPanel are accessible from Menu | Settings | 'LXPanel panel configuration' and its configuration is at '/root/.config/lxpanel/default/config'.

For JWM settings see Menu | Desktop | 'JWM configuration', '/etc/xdg/templates/_root_.jwmrc' and '/root/.jwmrc-tray'.
Hope that helps,
TazOC

Thank you!

JWM's configuration uses some mystical system I do not understand; the primary file you cited refers to files I cannot find. Ah, well. I can add apps through wbar effectively, thanks to your help.

Hi TazOC,

Thanks for this fine update. I'm posting this from a frugal installation on an USB flash drive formatted fat32. Haven't tried anything but the KDE desktop.

Thanks,
Jim :)

442d feedback

#247 Post by Barburo »

Hi TazOC
I have been using your latest "d" with LXDE and CF, and I quite like it!
I have repositioned the taskbar to top and wbar to bottom, and so far things are OK. I'll continue to test.
I have one Wbar issue:
right click on desktop shows wbar. Another click removes it. One more click and I get two wbars on top of each other, one static the other moves - looks quite strange.

I tried the new KDE with CF - there are some transparency issues, (doesn't always work) and KDE is quite a bit slower (even with 2 CPUs). There are several new apps and the Dolphin file manager to test out - I'll try to give you feedback if I have time.

My previous issue on the older desktop with fuzzed fonts in firefox went away if I specify "do not allow pages to use their own fonts" in firefox options. I think it's related to the nvidia drivers.

Jim1911 and Barburo,
Thank you for your feedback and comments. I also have the same problems with wbar in LXDE, but restarting X usually corrects the overlapping icons.

I also have a bug with Firefox in LHP--dragging a link into ROX-Filer used to open wget and save the target. Since the upgrade to FF 3.5 I get an error message instead.

I tested a full install of Lighthouse and compiled a newer kernel, but now Firefox opens and shortly freezes every time. I'm going to test FF in Puppy 4.3 beta1 and see if it works any better.

Hi Tazoc
I'm having pretty good success with lhp 442d on my desktop. I like the look and feel, lots to explore.
One small issue, my mouse scroll wheel works in other distros (xp, mint, churchpup 3.01, etc.) but doesn't in any of the lhps I've tried (412f, 442c) It's a Logitech wireless. I've tried googling without success, was wondering if it might be a Barebones issue, or if anyone might direct me toward a solution.
Thanks, pp

Hi pudgypup,
Thank you for trying Lighthouse. I don't have any Logitech hardware to test. You might try the following in a terminal:

Code: Select all

modprobe hid-logitech
modprobe logibm
modprobe input-polldev
Then click Menu | Setup | Mouse/keyboard wizard and restart X. If that helps, add the above code to /etc/rc.d/rc.local, skipping any modprobes that give an error.
Hope that helps,
TazOC

No joy. It only gave an error message for modprobe logibm, so I went to the Mouse/keyboard wizard, it showed the correct connection and had checked "Mouse has a scroll-wheel", did the restart X, got online to this page, tried to scroll up and down with wheel, nothing. Closed firefox, added the 2 modprobes to the /etc... file as directed, restarted icewm, still no joy.
It worked in 3.01 5 minutes ago, if I reboot in 3.01 I'm sure it will work again. It's a puzzler

Logitech wireless mouse wheel

#253 Post by tazoc »

pudgypup,
Does the wheel work in any Puppy 4.xx? If not, post on the puppy forum under Hardware or Users (for the regulars). Someone with more expertise than I should reply.

See if your /etc/mousedevice reads 'input/mice' and /etc/mousebuttons reads '5'.

No xvid playing possible in LHP 4.4.2d ?

#254 Post by jade14 »

Hi there ! I have been looking an SMP-enabled well trained Puppy w 4.XX compatibility and recently tried Lighthouse 4.4.2d.

Was impressed by how smooth and well thought-out everything ran except for the fact that when attempting to play several movies in avi format not gxine, nor Mplayer nor VLC would reproduce video (the latter one at least displayed a rather disheartening VLC IS NOT ABLE TO PLAY XVID MOVIES AND THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT :( )..

Isnt there seriously...? Its a great puppy... but no movie playing is a show stopper for sure.

Any codec pack or doggie-pretzel that might do the trick ?

LHPCodecs-1.pet

#255 Post by tazoc »

Jorge,
This codec pack that should enable xvid playback with MPlayer/Gxine and many other types of video as well:
http://www.lhpup.org/pet/4/LHPCodecs-1.pet ~8M
md5: a9397ac1b177b5db9a1a4db50dd1d148

If this doesn't help please post a link to a sample video I can test. If MPlayer gives 'could not open selected video output device', switch to x11 video driver in MPlayer preferences and restart MPlayer.

Most of the codecs are also in LHP Mariner SFS. I don't know which codec is needed for xvid nor do I know how to make VLC play xvid, but I tested the pack with Mariner and it seems to work well for MPlayer. I will test it with LHP base and update if necessary.
[Updated for LHP Base.]

I get the same result in lhp312f and lhp442d. I used Geany to find that /etc/mousebuttons does read '5', but /etc/mousedevice reads only 'psaux'. I input 'input/mice' (w/o quotes) and saved it, then rebooted, but no change.
As you suggest, I'll try in Hardware or Users, thanks for your help.

Hi pudgypup,
I'd still like to know if it works in official Puppy 4.1.2 or later.
Thanks,

I've tried Puppy 4.1.2 and 4.4.2d from Lighthouse Pup on 3 boxes: a Dell Dimension 2100, an HP Pavilion, and my home HP (less than 2 years old). In every case, the mouse scroll wheel does nothing. I have also a DVD disk of LHP 4.4.2C, with KDE, and the scroll wheel works, I just have to write it to a CD for use on the Dell. I haven't tried any of the other 4.1.2 distros, but when Subito Piano gets the Concordia beta released, I'll give it a whirl.

Wow you've been busy testing all those! Must be frustrating with no mouse wheel--I use mine all the time. I have no idea why it would work on 442c but not 442d. I wonder if the Section "Input Device" in xorg.conf is related? Here's mine:

Code: Select all

Section "InputDevice"
	#Option "Emulate3Timeout" "50"
	Identifier "Mouse0"
	Driver "mouse"
	Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" #mouse0protocol
	Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
	#Option "Emulate3Buttons"
	Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" #scrollwheel
EndSection
Take care,
TazOC
