Colonel Panic wrote:Yet another good one (maybe I should find a more imaginative way to start my posts in this thread?). I've just installed PCLinux Mate (forget the version number, but it's the latest one), and it's working well.
That's a distro I like as well. I used it for awhile on my main computer,...and it was so intuitive (everything got setup and running with no problem at all). And it was very attractive! I guess I didn't care for a rolling-release type distro,....and I grew pretty tired of having "updates" evertime I would log in.
But other than that,...it was pretty outstanding.

I'm still using MX-15 and Stella 6.7 on my big, main computer, though. On my little laptop,..it's still Vector Lite 7.1,...and Quirky Xerus 8.0. I still have an empty partition on it's 500G hard drive, though. I'm trying out different stuff on that. Undecided on that just now. Did have Absolute Linux,..but not so sure right now if it will stay (now that Vector Lite is on there,...and working well). I want a small Debian-based distro on it (as well as Vector and Quirky). Still looking for that. Bodhi may win out.

Hello Nitehawk,

I am a long time user of LinuxBBQ and I am posting from a built up from NOX version with JWM based on Jessie stable. Might fit your needs.

Yes,...I thought about LinuxBBQ,..and even downloaded it. I might get a chance to try it after all,...since just this afternoon I crashed my little laptop to the moon and back!
(used kitty-litter happens sometime). I was trying something (I will NOT go into detail, because it was pretty stupid, and I don't wanna look dumb or anything like that, y'know).

So now I have a nice, clean 500G hard drive to start all over again on (LOL!). Going over to LinuxBBQ and have a really good look right now,........

Dug out an older P4, also with a 500G hard drive. Re-discovering LupuPuppy 5287. Nice. Also put Devuan 8 (Jessie) on it as well. Everything runs fast and smooth. I had forgotten just how nice the up-dated Lupu Puppy was. I added Chromium and Palemoon on it for even more functionality. I find myself using this older computer as my "main machine" right now,....since it is working so well. Amazing what the right OS can do for older hardware.

Hello Nitehawk have you tried Antix - these days you can either choose to use Debian Stable or Sid Repos during install. Ideal for old machines.

Yes!
I actually really like Antix 15! I've been having some trouble about setting up my laptop on it ('cause it connects to my home network with a wifi USB thingy). It's a Ralink broadcom thing,...and I'm sure I'll get it going sooner or later. I've been using Linux for over a decade now,...but just recently got off of dialup :D
....soooooooooo I am a bit of a newbie at internet stuff just now. I'll figure it all out, though.

I'm actually using the old laptop right now,...but I put in an old CD of Puppy 4.31 in it (got the internet set-up right away). I will be restoring the Windows XP on it today,....then probably add this Puppy 4.31 and Antix 15 on it as well. It sould be a VERY useful old laptop by then! Antix is a sweet little distro (love it).

Try the version 16 if I remember correctly there is an improvement with the network manager.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/antix- ... /antiX-16/

Otherwise use ceni the commandline tool.

Decided to expand the XP partition on an old 32 bit box so I wiped the rest of sda (leaving the NTFS partition). I moved the Puppy frugals to sdb first though. :) But Xubuntu and LMDE were gone.

Long story short, still had some space left on sda so I chose MX-15 over Devuan since I know how stable MX is. ( MX-14.4 and AntiX 15 are already on sdb.)

Working great as expected and no systemd.

That's OK,...
whoot! whoot! whoot! I just got everything working in Antix-15 on this old HP Pavilion DV2000 laptop!!!! Very happy now. Both MX-15, and Antix are just such outstanding Debian-based distros. I was crushed when I heard that Simply Mepis would no longer be maintained,...but now that they are throwing their efforts to MX and Antix,...makes me a happy camper. :D {nitehawk is smiling from ear to ear}
EDIT: PS: the WinXP re-install disk I got off of Ebay was crap. So just decided NOT to worry about even the thought of having Windoze touch this laptop. Antix is the main distro on it now. I will add maybe Absolute (or Vector lite),...and a couple of Puppies.

This old laptop is gonna SING!

Yes got Antix version 16 working from a stick - Antix great for old hardware. Wicd is the network manager on this. Connects well.

Anyway glad to hear your enjoying your machine. :D

4Mlinux is basically rather weak and buggy distro. Most of the menu items, especially under "Internet", are useless.

The only one good thing of it is that : when you click on the wifi icon, a pull down menu shows all the available potential wifi connections it can find. You just select from the list your choice, and then enter the required password, if any, it then connects smoothly.

Yes,...I have several more powerful computers,...but this clunkey little laptop is sooo much fun to fool around with, (and see what linux can do on it). I find myself using this laptop,..and a couple of other really older machines more than the higher-powered stuff.

I made a seperate home partition for Antix on here,..so that I will be able to up-grade more easily to Antix 16 soon. I am a HUGE fan of Puppy, Antix, Vector,..etc. etc.

@quirkian2new
thanks for the warning,..doesn't sound like something that is ready to use everyday,...

The network in AntiX (Beta) has unfortunately crashed and I couldn't immediately see how to resurrect it, so I'm back posting in MX-15 again (which after installing all 293 updates is just as good).

Devuan is next on my list of distros to try, and after that, the new release of Gentoo, which offers a choice of 32-bit and 64-bit kernels to boot from the live disk (just as stemsee's EmSee Ultra does).

[EDIT: networking in AntiX managed to resurrect itself somehow and I'm posting from it again now. Devuan will have to wait I'm afraid :) ]

BunsenLabs have been working on a successor distro to CrunchBang, which they've called Hydrogen. I'm posting from it now and it's good apart from the fact that I've so far been unable to install LibreOffice Calc (it comes with Writer and gnumeric already installed).

Apart from that, it's quite similar to CrunchBang++ although subtly different; the shortcut keys and system info text uses a different font and colour which stands out more from the grey background.

Just installed the latest version of Vector Light (7.2 B3.1), and found it works well with Ratpoison which I had to install separately. I'm thinking of keeping one distro for use with tiling window managers (dwm is also a good one).

Just one thing; I found it would only save files from either LibreOffice ior Abiword to the Desktop folder; for some reason, the permissions don't recognise my home partition.

Thanks, but I'm afraid I haven't a clue about that one. I may ask a question about it in the AntiX forums.

In other news; I've recently reinstalled Salix Mate 14.1 (64-bit). Apart from the usual rigmarole with Salix resulting from the fact that one of the necessary files - .dmrc - is missing, it's working well. I'm not convinced though that for must users, and certainly most Puppy users with older computers, there's much to be gained from using the 64-bit version of Salix as opposed to the 32-bit.
