rt-preempt kernel version / Questions on the Lucid build

#222 Post by Sit Heel Speak »

@playdayz !!!

I will have an rt-preempt-smp-kernel version of Lucid ready soon...I gave Barry's 2.6.33.2 source the rt-13 patchset, it applied with only one hitch, and I found the patch to fix that...so it will probably be a drop-in replacement...

(***edited, rest of this post has become non sequitur***)

Bedtime now, will post a screenshot in the morning.

Heh...woof-building Lucid turned out to need quite a bit of hand tweaking.

However, you should not assume that all programs will install and run correctly by downloading them with the Lucid repositories in Puppy Package Manager.
Yes that is okay with me.

But that maybe makes it hard to achieve the .sfs thing we have threads about.

That one place .sfs versions of common programs outside of puppy save on the HDD and any kind of puppy would be able to make use of that .sfs program?

Say me are in puppy431std or next version of puppy official version. Puppy 5 whatever.

then it would be col to be able to use chrome to test it without including it in a save file.
Then I go into coming Lupu 07 or some other number and do the same.

would that fail then?
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Using it now - looking very good
:)
The Help does not work in Inkscape. Who knows Python? There are two files in /usr/share/Inkscape/extensions, named launch_webrowser.py and Inkscape_help_manual.inx, that seem to be the ones. Please do not assume that I know anything. Thanks.
Puppy does not (and nor should it because of the size) contain Python - you would need aprox 20-30MB of size increase to include python files in Puppy.
It MAY be possible to convert and run with Vala but the best bet might be online inkscape documentation - or tell people they will need to download a python pet to include the full Inkcape with manual.

Audacity is a sound editor (not just music editor) as it says on the install program.

The new update on the installer and sfs page on the wiki - yes - good plan
I tried the Lucid update and got Puppy Pink Floyd style wallpaper - nice

Kompozer, Geany, Gimp and Audacity all installed OK
and seem to be running and therefore I would think working - but further testers needed. :)

Make sure you credit yourself as well as Barry on the help file :)

Liked the new light blue wallpaper
Quite a few were created for Puppy 4.2 - maybe someone has them available?

Gonna restart x now to see if the radeonHD driver installed or is right for my system - update yep that worked

Many thanks - good work :)

Good deal--it worked for me also.

I will check that I put instructions in the first message. You got it: Download with QuickPet and then exit to a prompt and run xorgwizard. What radeonhd does for you now is that you can use 16-bit without the green screen. Maybe more speed and/or stability??? Maybe better able tto benefit from dri/glx when the full-xorg is available.

More testers needed

Firefox started to crash on some sites - installed Seamonkey - same
Then used Puppy browser - that was crashing - some sites only - this forum uses php and I am able to use - posting from 007 now

Did a fresh run (puppy pfix=ram) - browser exiting when for example trying to run distrowatch.com - not sure what it could be?

Did not have this crashing behaviour in 006

Great job team!:D

Quickpackage is really getting there, works great. The Update feature is super. The SFS links with it’s tutorial is another fine feature.

So far 007 is working fine on my frugal installation on an ext4 partition with a 3fs save file, but pwidgets. I’ll post the fix on the bug thread.

Two suggestions:
1. Consider another button for Quickpackage for large files and move the SFS links from Update to the new button.

2. Consider removing the 4fs save file option on first shutdown, until Barry gets that problem corrected.

Cheers,
Jim :D

sadly same problem as before. But even worse.

On lupu 004 and 005 and 006 firefox survives but had the split up of screen if one go fast from upper to lower to read a post on Puppy forum.

It does not have problem if one scroll using arrows or page down.

What is worse is that firefox shut down when I go to sites that usually work very well in Quirky 18 and so on.

Maybe it has to do with some code on those sites. svt.se or sr.se is local example.

Lupu 007. Fresh frugal install. MD5 was ok. Firefox crashes all the time. First I noticed it when I tried to watch flash needed video. Same with older pet installed Firefox, updated to 3.6.3. Chrome works and writing from it.

Cups does not work with my HP Laserjet 1020. I installed first foo2xxx_r220909-0.0-i486.pet needed for my printer.
Print test page error: "/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstopdf failed" or "May not be a PDF file (continuing anyway)"
It worked in Lupu 006 after cups.conf tweaking.

Fresh frugal install of 007. Firefox and SeaMonkey both are unusable do to constant crashing. Tried pets from Quickpackage as well as others from the forum.
Posting now from Opera 10, installed through Quickpackage. Not recognizing the latest flash plugin but at least its not crashing. :)
Will do further testing later today.........

It is Flash again causing crashes? We can roll back - try another version? Use the Lucid update system even perhaps?

Firefox and Seamonkey are crashing with Flash. The fix might take a day. I apologize. Too many build cycles. I am freshening up. This is a good thing. No worries. See you tomorrow.

The SFS links tutorial is super, however, recommend that the line "Unfortunately SFS can not be used on a full install." be modified because it is misleading.

Suggested edit:

NOTE: These procedures work only with a frugal installation. Unfortunately, SFS files cannot be installed using the bootloader with a full installation. The SFS must be mounted and the individual files placed in the proper directories. Try this sfs install program which may work, otherwise the files must be copied manually to the proper directories on the hard drive.
