This is Ubuntu Bionic Beaver running on a hard drive formatted as GPT. Ubuntu is installed into "primary" partition sda5. Originally, Ubuntu wrote its GRUB2 bootloader onto the root of sda (the MBR).

Then Legacy GRUB Config 2018 restored its own Stage1 boot code onto the MBR. Ubuntu now launches from the boot partition on sda1 with:

Code: Select all

title Ubuntu Bionic Beaver
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/grub/i386-pc/core.img

RPhoto is a handy tool for working with digital images. It can crop a photo to a specific aspect ratio, like 3:2.

The download here contains both 32/64bit .deb packages.

How to make a squashfs module for Kingsoft WPS Office

1. Go to the WPS site and get a 32/64 bit Debian package.

2a. Do a third-party build: repo2sfs wps-office_10.1.0.6757_i386.deb
2b. An additional package libglu1-mesa will be automatically included in the build if needed.

3. At Pause B, go to /tmp/repo2sfs. Delete the folder usr/share/mime

4. When WPS starts, it shows a nag screen about possible missing symbol fonts. It you want them, go here. Follow the instructions.

5. Perdido has posted some language packs for WPS here. You can include them in your module.
a. Download a PET, give it a .tgz extension and extract it with unzipper.
b. Stop the repo2sfs build at Pause B. Go to /tmp/repo2sfs.
c. Copy the content from the pack into the corresponding locations in the build - the folders "dicts/spellcheck" and "mui".
d. Run WPS. The menu bar has a "Switch languages" icon at the right.
e. UNcheck Follow system locale. Select the new language. Restart WPS.

Dropbox GUI is a light-weight client for your Dropbox cloud storage. It was created by mikeb here as a front-end to this project. Fred has posted instructions here.

I have numbered this version 1.0.8 so it updates Fred's latest package. It has a few changes to the UI (additional confirmation messages) and a bugfix for filenames that contain spaces.

[Update] I have renamed this project as dropbox-gui to avoid conflicts with Fred's own dropboxgui package.

This package should also click-install into some Puppies. The dependencies are gtkdialog4 and curl. Look for it in the Network/Internet menu.

Hi Bill, from time to time I did upgrade the dropboxgui package (from 1.0.1 to 1.0.7) and as far as I can remember the latest has the fix for filenames that contain spaces already.
(but please correct me if I'm wrong)
EDIT: Also v1.0.7 has improvement for better view when maximized.
See: https://fredx181.github.io/StretchDog/i ... ges/Extra/

EDIT: But more than welcome of course if you have any more improvements, then should become version 1.0.8

Fred

This is an old Toshiba NB510 netbook with an Atom N2600 CPU, 2GB RAM and a 128GB SSD. The 1024x600 video uses the gma500 kernel module and the Xorg i915 modesetting driver.

As a Win7-era machine, it isn't a lot faster than its XP predecessors, but the SSD makes it MUCH quieter and energy-efficient.

Everything works OOTB, including the RTL8188CE WiFi, HDMI port and card reader.

Palemoon 27 used to play Youtube video, but something changed recently and it quit. By chance, I discovered that some gstreamer plugins had the missing stuff. So I bundled them into a squashfs module. Now Youtube works again.

New releases of the Starter Kit with kernel 4.9.0-7 are posted above. Many other packages are also updated.

For Broadcom WiFi users, I have packages for the wl driver. Just ask.

This is the latest hplip-print-scan v3.18.12. The download here is a combo package that contains 32/64bit versions of the driver.

How to make a 64bit squashfs module for Downline

Downline is a front-end for the youtube-dl video download app.

1. Get the tarball from here.
2. Extract it with unzipper. Rename the new "linux-unpacked" folder as "downline".
3. Get the .deb package attached below.
4. Run: repo2sfs downline_1.2.0_amd64.deb
5. At Pause B, go to /tmp/repo2sfs.
6. Open the "opt" folder. Drop in the "downline" folder from Step 2.
7. Finish the build.
8. Look for Downline in the Internet menu.

Hints:
a. Open the Downline Settings screen (the gear icon). Set the Download Location to something like /root/Downloads.
b. When getting a hi-res video, select a lower resolution, like 480.
c. PeasyMP3 (from Fred's repo) is a simple player for these video clips.

ImageSlicer slices a graphics file into sections so you can print it across multiple pages.

The default output format for the slices is PNM, which is the fastest for printing with PeasyPrint v3.1.

Look for ImageSlicer in the Graphics menu.

This "Peasy" stuff seems to be pretty useful.

Is there something like a Peasy Suite that combines all those useful programs, to just have to install a single .pet or to use it from a single .sfs?

No. But thanks for the test report.

And the Starter Kit doesn't use PETs.

Yes, I'm in Puppy and am using some of the peasy music/optical stuff. Just assuming they are already outdated...

Probably a "Peasy" page where to find links to all that stuff (for the easiness of search)?

There is a list here. I have kept some of these apps updated in parallel with their Stretch-Live Debian versions.

Some of the new Debian packages may also be click-installable into Puppy.
