I've just installed the latest version of LXLE, which is based on Lubuntu and is another good distro for older computers in my view.

http://www.lxle.net/
Gigabyte M68MT-52P motherboard, AMD Athlon II X4 630, 5.8 GB of DDR3 RAM and a 250 GB Hitachi hard drive running Ubuntu 16.04.6, MX-19.2, Peppermint 10, PCLinuxOS 20.02, LXLE 18.04.3, Pardus 19.2, exGENT 200119, Bionic Pup 8.0 and Xenial CE 7.5 XL.

The beta of Mint 17.3 has just come out, which I'm posting from (live disk), and it looks good so far; it uses Cinnamon by default.

It's codenamed Rosa though, which is a bit confusing for those who have used or know of the Russian distro of the same name.

I downloaded this bomb to my in-use smartphone, thought better of it, deleted the file, and downloaded it to my recently abandoned Moto G 3rd gen with Lollipop 5.1.1. After installing I made an immediate mistake of selecting "Always" open FF OS 2.5 rather than "Just Once", and attempted to uninstall it from General Settings, so I could start over. The Uninstall button was grayed out, so I did the logical thing, I forced the app to stop. Nothing worked after that. The Uninstall button remained grayed out. I rebooted, and FF OS started loading, but then I got a black screen for Home. I never saw Home icons again, just the three navigation buttons at the bottom. I made the mistake of deleting all the running pages including Settings, so I never could find Settings again after that. In the end, I had to do a full wipe and factory reset. Luckily, I have a similar setup on my working phone, so I could use Moto Migrate to move most of my data over from the other phone. Lost about 3 hours, not counting some details. First time I ever had to recover an Android smartphone. Not many options, really. I inspected FF OS 2.5 through the mist of my panic, for less than 2 minutes, noticed that the icons look very VGA and large. Just what I needed at 10pm, a smartphone crash.
It only now occurs to me that the Puppy Linux project should be working on a launcher like this. Don't let me spill the beans if Barry is already hard at work on it. In other words, design Puppy as an app that can run in Android.

Before you try FF OS 2.5 Dev Preview app, you should install AirDroid from Google Play to give you the ability to uninstall apps remotely from a PC, just in case an app crashes your phone.

Thanks for the good news about Slackware. They sound committed to offering a real alternative to systemd. If Mint is eventually forced to follow Debian's path, I'll look for a Slackware-based distro for my wife's computer.

Salix looks pretty nice. Anyone tried it? It has Mate and KDE versions and also a light Openbox version.

Hi,

I have tried Salix and it didn't go particularly well for me although others had more success with it.

I mentioned it at the top of page 131 of this thread; I made at least one mistake in installation, which may have accounted for at least some of the problems I had with it.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 639#851819

Nevertheless, I use Absolute now which works well for me and is based on Slackware 14.1. Vector's also a good distro which is based on Slackware, as is Zenwalk.

Good luck anyway; it's good to see other people using Slackware or Slackware-based distros as it's one of the oldest Linux distros around and even predates Windows 95.

I like to jump around and use different distributions and operating systems.. All I really use computers for nowadays is doing my college homework and Internet "stuff". Adds some variety, heh.

So I have a Chromebook and an android tablet from ZEKI, My hard drive has Mint 17.2 installed. I run Ubuntu and different versions of Puppy off the flash drive.

If you installed a vnc/rdp server on your Windows box, that RDP's a puppy box, and install vnc client on your tablet, you could have all three working at the same time and controlled from your tablet.

My pup has 5 desktops each with different backgrounds and icons. In the image below case its running a 3D/animated Openshot/Blender title render (that usually takes a while and hogs CPU) - but running in isolation/separately doesn't load the Windows box.

With Samba server also running on the Pup, files/directories are just another tree under the Windows directory tree.

Tried Zorin with the Razor-QT desktop, and they go together really well. Unfortunately at the moment I have no sound on it and the distro doesn't come with alsamixer (which is what I normally use to correct this problem), so I'll probably have to swap it out for something else.

Amother interesting distro; I'm posting this from Makulu Aero Edition, which uses the Cinnamon desktop, is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and comes form South Africa.

It's got an offbeat choice of software; the main browser is Opera Developer (although you can install Firefox as well, which I've done), and the office suite is Kingsoft Office.

Thanks James, I'm using it now and it's to AntiX's usual high standards. Only thing is; conky manager is very hit and miss in MX in my experience so a good conkyrc file would go a long way in it.

Hi.

Anyone heard about Ubuntu dropping 32bit OS after their 2016 releases?

Some information available on this?

What does this mean to Puppy?
