gratz to all on a job well-done :)

.. yes, a bugfix'd 4.21 Barebones would top it off nicely (minimal dl & such for the dialup folks, y'know ;) )

Personally I just had a nice experience with P4.12 Barebones as it remastered pretty much exactly as planned (wot - no lizards or pwidgets? and the icons are beauts in my eyes even if they're a fixed set - add the 4 wm's, various text editors and noters and throw in a few consoles some nice fonts and a good audio player and it all works well enough for 'old stuff' :) )

@edoc: You might get more specific advice if you posted your questions somewhere other than in Announcements. In any case:

Is this a full or frugal install? If it's full:

1. Boot off the Live CD
2. At the short initial pause, type: puppy pfix=ram
3. Go to a console and type: e2fsck -p /dev/sda1

The above command assumes that your Puppy partition is sda1.

If you have a frugal install:

1. Boot off the Live CD
2. At the short initial pause, type: puppy pfix=ram
3. Click on the drive icon to mount sda1
4. Type: e2fsck -p /mnt/sda1/pup_save.2fs

I just wanted to say that you all did a fantastic job with 4.2. I put a live disk in my wife's 256 ram 1 MGH processor computer and it's running like greased lightening! Just keeps getting better folks!

In fact, having looked at the code in killcups, I don't understand how it could have ever worked on anyone's machine.
People were having issues with installing printers live, When they would install them, they would have to reboot the pc, killcups stopped that, it worked perfect on my pc and everybody else never complained since we started using the never cups in the early alpha series, Strange now it isn't working right, when I made the script I followed the restart commands given by cups. Every time you start the printer wizard it starts.

Hi,

I'm currently sitting at a linux user group (lvlug.org) meeting in Vegas. After a year of distro surfing, Puppy 4.2 is the fastest thing I have ever installed on this 6 year old PII Dell laptop! Runs like a scared rabbit! Now, it would be really nice if I could get Enlightenment E17 working. Is there a pupletlet that will get 4.2 to work like macpup based on E17 or a .pet that will get enlightenment working as well as macpup?

Thanks,
Glen

PuppyPin ix an XML and doesn't open.

How do I restore my desktop icons, please?

it could be corrupted somehow
mount the cd with 4.2 on it, drag the pup_420.sfs to you /root/ (takes a few minutes to copy)
now rename it to anything like pup_420.sfs ---> I-screwed-up_420.sfs
now click on I-screwed-up_420.sfs it should popup/open (don't do anything and do the next step)
next delete /root/Choices and then drag /root/Choices from the mounted I-screwed-up_420.sfs to /root/ to replace the messed up one. see how that goes.

I cannot delete /root/Choices because down in /root/Choices/ROX-Filer is PuppyPin and whether I try to delete in a window or in RXVT it is deined with a Stale NFS file handle error.

Dont know if its relevant, but Stale NFS file handle error. usually comes when pup_save file is corrupted. When I get this, I have to make a new one.

Yes that more more sense being "NFS"related, I was just going off of what he said, That case Ecomoney rename you pupsave to a word like, oh-Crap.tar.gz
then reboot.

I had copied over my 412 pup_save and renamed it 420 so that I could hold on to all of that info.

420 did ask if I wanted to upgrade to 420 and I said Yes. It ran without error.

Is that the reason?

well rename it to like I said above and reboot and see if you still have that error :)
I never Had that error that you have, but it makes logical sense. You can always rename it back without harming it :)

Forcing a new pup_save file to be created gets the desktop working but it means that I lose all of my prior settings, etc.

This cannot be the best way to do a Puppy version upgrade - is this just my usual non-typical experience where the upgrade went bad or is this something being looked at for repair?

Having to manually reinstall every prior app and to manually restore my Address Book, Mail Folders, Bookmarks, History, etc. is a major nuisance.

I have previously created the following instructions - is it necessary that I repeat this sequence (with the exception of steps #1 & #2 -- and changing the version number) every time I upgrade versions?

Loading Puppy Linux Normal Frugal on a Laptop

1. Boot from the Puppy Linux ISO CD using "puppy pfix=ram"

2. Open gparted and partition the HDD:
sda1 7GB ext3 boot
sda2 _GB ext3
sda3 2GB Linux Swap

3. Click on the sda1 icon to mount it - a window will automatically open,
add a new directory /pup411

4. Click on the sr0 icon and copy the three Frugal files to /pup411
initrd.gz, pup_411.sfs, vmlinuz

5. Unmount sda1 and sr0

6. Run Grub using defaults - choose /dev/sda1 and MBR

7. Click on the sda1 icon to mount it - a window will automatically open,
click on boot then grub then right click on menu.lst and mouse to the
right hand column and click on "Open as text" - Edit as follows:

timeout 3
color light-gray/blue black/light-gray
title Puppy Linux 4.11-Normal(on /dev/sda1)
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/pup411/vmlinuz PMEDIA=idehd PDEV1=sda1
psubdir=pup411 vga=normal acpi=noirq
initrd (hd0,0)/pup411/initrd.gz

Put a # at the beginning of all other lines to "comment them out"
Save

8. REBOOT and respond to questions as follows:
YES to "Save to File"
OK
OK to "sda1"
OK to default pup_save.2fs
OK to "Normal"
OK to "512"
YES to "Save"
NO to "Copy pup_411.sfs" (you have previously copied it to
/sda1/pup411)

9. REBOOT (pop out the Puppy ISO CD) selecting the appropriate values for the laptop:
Type of mouse/trackball
US Keyboard
xorg 1024x768, OK, OK (substitute the 1024x768 with your preferred resolution)
Click pop-up for Getting Started and listen for Woof! Close window

10. Click on the sda1 icon to mount it - a window will automatically open,
MOVE pup_save.2fs into /pup411

11. Automate the opening of sda1 and sda2 at bootup:
Click on the FILE icon then left-click on the "eyeball" icon on the toolbar to
show the "hidden files", then open the folder /.etc then subfolder /rc.d
then right click on rc.local and mouse to the right hand column and
click on "Open as text" - Edit as follows:

Add new line "mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2"

Save file and close. (NOTE: Save will not see the pup_save.2fs previously
copied to /pup420 so let this save to pup_save-1.2fs then repeat Step #10
right-clicking on pup_save.2fs and selecting delete.

12. REBOOT

13. This is to Upgrade Seamonkey -- not sure if this is needed in 4.20 and beyond

Click on the FILE icon then go to my-applications then create a new
folder called "seamonkey"

Download Seamonkey 1.1.13 from http://www.seamonkey-project.org
into the "seamonkey" folder you just created

Click on the FILE icon then go to /usr/lib/seamonkey-1.1.11 leave window open

Return to the /root/my-applications/seamonkey folder where you
downloaded Seamonkey 1.1.13 and click on it and follow the Puppy
defaults to unextract it.

Open the "seamonkey-installer" folder that the extract process created,
right click on a clear spot in the background, slide the mouse down to
"window" then across and down to "open terminal here" and click -
then type "./seamonkey-installer" and hit the Enter key.

When the Seamonkey Installer asks where to install navigate to /usr/lib
then it will display "Seamonkey" in the little window - add "-1.1.11" to
the end of "Seamonkey".

When the installer warns that it already exists and asks if you want to
delete it respond YES. You have now successfully updated Seamonkey!

14. Move most saved documents outside of pup_save.2fs to gain more space
and to work-around the Personal Save File size/stability limitations
using a symlink.

Example: Move /root/my-documents outside of the pup_save like this:

Open Pmount, and click the icon to the left of the partition that is
mounted (where your frugal install lives) that will open a ROX-Filer
window at: /mnt/home

Now open a second ROX-Filer window at: /root

Now Drag 'n' Drop /root/my-documents into: /mnt/home

Select Copy (from the menu that appears) (it's safer to Copy than Move,
you still have the original if anything goes wrong)

Now DELETE the original /root/my-documents directory.

Now Drag 'n' Drop /my-documents
FROM: /mnt/home
BACK into: /root
This time select: Link (relative)

That's it, /root/my-documents now resides OUTSIDE of your
pup_save.2fs file

Anything downloaded or copies to: /root/my-documents
causes no change to "free space" it no longer shrinks.

15. Set up a "standard/portable" Mozilla Profile to be used from computer to
computer or restored on the same computer as necessary:

Preparations
Back up the existing messages and settings -everything in the profile
folder. Mozilla stores E-mail messages in a profile.

Where is the Mozilla profile?
Under Linux, the profile created should be in root/ in .mozilla/default
(or another name given to the profile).

Step-by-step instructions
In your Freshly installed Puppy. Start Mozilla (Seamonkey).

Step 1
After starting the default profile, go to Tools > Switch profile > Manage
profiles > Create profile > Next > Enter (new profile) name
{portablemozilla}.
The name that you type here becomes the folder where the profile
will be stored {portablemozilla}.
Now, go on to > Choose folder - here choose the path to where the
profiles will be stored, for example /root/savestuff1/Mozilla_Profiles
Finish creating the profile, and start Mozilla with it. Now exit Mozilla.

Step 2
Locate the folder where the new profile is stored, it should be named
something like (new profile) m7i698pg.slt; similar to the name of the
profile that you have backed up earlier.

We will call this folder with already existing mail and settings
the (original profile) r3y1skkw.slt.

Write down the name of the (new profile) m7i698pg.slt folder that has
just been created in the new profile directory, and then rename (or
delete) this folder.

Paste here the (original profile) r3y1skkw.slt profile directory from the
location where you have backed it up (CD-ROM, network, etc).

Now rename it with the name that Mozilla (Seamonkey) had just
created for the (new profile) m7i698pg.slt.
The name just written down a minute ago.

Start Mozilla. All settings and email, including Master Password for the
security device, should work normally. Test E-mail.

Step 3
In any future Puppy installs
Start Mozilla (Seamonkey) and create a new profile with the same name
{portablemozilla} in the same destination folder /root/savestuff1/
Mozilla_Profiles
Done. This is it! Congratulations!
Start Mozilla (Seamonkey) with this new profile.

16. Add Network Printer recognition to CUPS: NOTE: This may not be needed in
4.20 and beyond - Not Certain

First verify that you have the file /opt/samba/bin/smbspool

Then go to the folder /usr/lib/cups/backend

Inside this folder you need to make a symlink to the smbspool file and
name it "smb".

Open a console and type: ln -s /opt/samba/bin/smbspool smb

Restart CUPS using command: /etc/init.d/cups restart

Open the CUPS web interface and start installing a new printer.

At the bottom of the Device list you should now see "Windows Printer
via Samba"

Make the device URI smb://PC_NAME/PRINTER_NAME

17. Add the Clusty search engine to the choices in Puppy-4.1.1, with the
default SeaMonkey 1.1.11, then make Clusty the default:

Go to: http://clusty.com and click on "toolbars & plugins"

Click on "Install the Search Plugin"

In Seamonkey go to:
Edit > Preferences > Navigator > Internet Search
and change the Default Search Engine to Clusty

NOTE: Clusty.com appears to have changed ownership to Vivisimo and I cnnot
find a browser plug-in on their pages any more. I have inquired of ixquick.com
for a browser plug-in for Seamonkey as they only offer them for Explorer and
Firefox at the moment. Ixquick.com browses multiple engines AND does not
track your IP to your search requests.

18. To get your email/bookmarks/etc outside of the save file drag /root/.mozilla to
/mnt/home selecting "Move" from the pop-up window, then drage it back
selecting "Link Absolute". This will also allow you to run multiple versions of
Puppy on the me drive yet use the same E-mail directory.

Note: Most of this was acquired from the Puppy Forum and a considerable portion via PM from Forum member CatDude, #18 came from DaveS. My gratitude to all! doc

edoc, sounds like you are beginning to really understand how to get the best out of Puppy :D
I set up my email/bookmarks etc the way you set up my-documents. Just drag /root/.mozilla to /mnt/home, and from the rox pop-up select 'move'. Drag it back again, only this time, select 'link absolute'. Now all emails etc are stored outside of the save file. This has the advantage of also being extremely simple to do with multiple puppies on the same drive, so that they are all accessing just a single email directory.
I use a great little back-up/sync program called grsync. It has an ini file in /root/grsync that it uses to store profiles. I also symlink this from a single location outside of the _save file so that the profile will be available to multiple pups. Much the same with Puppy Podcast Grabber, so that downloads save outside the _save file.

Try booting with the "pfix=fsck" option to see if it fixes the corrupted file.

NFS file handle error

Pizzasgood wrote:Try booting with the "pfix=fsck" option to see if it fixes the corrupted file.
Great tip. It fixed a problem I had with 4 files in .mozilla. I wanted to move this folder outside my save file to another mounted SSD on my Eee but it would not let me because of these stale files would not move but pfix=fsck solved this. The reason I wanted to move it I picked up in another thread the top that by doing this and putting a link back in / you could then share the same settings for both Seamonkey mail and browser in another puppy furgal boot e.g. I can boot both 4.1.2 and 4.2.1 and use the same Seamonkey profiles.

BTW does is do any harm to leave pfix=fsck in my Grub menu.lst permanently?

(nb also just noted this SM trick is also reported in this thread as well)

No. I have mine set up this way. It slows boot by 5secs, but otherwise, its all good. I like booting with a checked file system each time. Here is the Grub entry, showing the syntax.

Code: Select all

title Puppy Linux 420 frugal SDA3
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
kernel /puppy420/vmlinuz pfix=fsck pmedia=atahd psubdir=puppy420 nosmp

Hooray! It worked!

I added "pfix=fsck" and +nosmp" to my existing GRUB and I have my desktop icons.

The icons for sda1 and sda2 are stacked on top of one-another, I manually dragged them apart so perhaps on the next reboot their positions will be remembered.

BTW: What is the purpose of "nosmp", please?

Thanks again!

nosmp means dont set up for multi-core processors. If you have a dual-core processor, you have to remove this, but you need a different Kernel for it to work. If you want to try it if you have a dual-core processor, then 4.2SMP is the Pup you need. I use it all the time now, as I have a dual-core, and somehow it seems less hard on the battery.
