What's all the excitement about a little housekeeping?

Dougal has a very good argument here. That is why I log in.Dougal wrote:I don't mean to be contrary... but they might like having the "view posts since last visit" link.JohnMurga wrote:Either way, those who didn't need to post won't miss the accounts.
for to be able to do just that!
"I" like having the "view posts since last visit" link.
So all the lurkers that now lost their user name most likely would either give up or reclaim it
AJ I know why I am not active on that Freenode chat
Lowtech, I am sorry. My capacity for being logical seems to have hit it's limit. Yes I do get that you had to create some other way to post if your preferred user name got blocked. So the other guy was my misunderstanding then. There where no other guy? It was you all the time?
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum

I think may be a simple button "Thank you" will give a chance to everyone who had help from the posts in this forum to give his respect to those who help the other users. In this way one don't have to add new post and to enlarge the topic just to say thanks.Béèm wrote:Shep, then there are those who post, get advice and never react on the issue.
You tell me what's going on in their minds.
About the massive clean up of user accounts my opinion is there should be some rule like "If you don't visit your account for over a month, or you don't have any posts for that period, your account will be deleted." This will solve the problem with unused accounts quickly and without further discussion.
And because I am a new puppy user and a had help from here and other forums, articles and sites even before I create an account here, let me show my respect and gratitude to all known and unknown people who helped me with their posts with those two simple words:
Thank you!

end of OT

I am 1 of the 12000 users
forgot my nick (it was another one)
computer crash
move in life....
Tried to register with my email address was not possible
email in use
So I had to get another email address to register in the forum
My question:
Should not an email address alone identify a person
AJ is well known to be a friendly helper on the Free Node Chat.
Many have told us that and I do trust them.
But others have also told us that AJ can be short tempered and have a sharp tongue.
I have not dared to go to that Free Node thing. I am not a tough guy.
I don't trust them like me there.
That link! Wow, just wow.

Choose your forum carefully
Web and IRC forums directed towards newbies often give the quickest response
As a second step, use project mailing lists
Use meaningful, specific subject headers
Make it easy to reply
Write in clear, grammatical, correctly-spelled language
Send questions in accessible, standard formats
Be precise and informative about your problem
Volume is not precision
Don't rush to claim that you have found a bug
Grovelling is not a substitute for doing your homework
Describe the problem's symptoms, not your guesses
Describe your problem's symptoms in chronological order
Describe the goal, not the step
Don't ask people to reply by private e-mail
Be explicit about your question
When asking about code
Don't post homework questions
Prune pointless queries
Don't flag your question as “Urgentâ€

Dearest Flash,Flash wrote:Alienjeff, you aren't a moderator of this forum so you don't have to look at every post. If nooby irritates you, ignore his posts.
1) Being a reasonably quick study, I fully realized a long time ago that I'm not a moderator on this forum,
2) I don't look at every post. Trust me on this,
3) nooby doesn't irritate me, however you frequently do, and therefore,
4) when you irritate me, I ignore your posts.
P.S. Your post which I am now replying to doesn't irritate me. It confirms a long held suspicion.

Re: Massive user clean up
Finding 12k users' locations and "taking care of them" must have taken a lot of time and resources. You could have used all that time to build a few more disk drives from scratch.JohnMurga wrote:Hi,
I have just completed a huge clean up of users who had never posted.

All in all I think it was about 12,000 users.

It might have been wiser to simply threaten the users' families, instead of taking your frustrations out on the users themselves. Just a suggestion for the next round of user culling.
And, John, please don't forget those sleepers. These insidious registrants post once every few months. They are simply waiting, for the right moment, to pounce on us all with their devilish schemes. Better put some safeguards, in place, to protect us all against these malicious scum bags.

With all due respect, please don't.saintless wrote: About the massive clean up of user accounts my opinion is there should be some rule like "If you don't visit your account for over a month, or you don't have any posts for that period, your account will be deleted." I am here quite often just to read and do not post much, Surely there are other readers doing the same. This forum is an awesome archive of great information. I have learned so much, and have never had to ask a question. (I like to learn at my own pace, then deploy what I've learned, then challenge myself further.)
I am only cleaning up usernames who have 0 posts, if you haven't been active in a while there is always a chance that you will come back (and I hope you do so).tabbycat wrote:With all due respect, please don't.saintless wrote: About the massive clean up of user accounts my opinion is there should be some rule like "If you don't visit your account for over a month, or you don't have any posts for that period, your account will be deleted." As soon as you have at least one post you are safe for ever
