You could save to the CD; however it will eventually fill. I, for one, would just create a save file on a hard disk, flash drive, etc. and boot off that, if I didn't want to do an install.

Also, you probably should take a look at some of the posts and other literature about the various and sundry methods of installing and booting puppy. A google search will likely provide a good amount of reading material on the subject.
