Hm, I got it working...of a sort.

There are a sea of little niggly problems I'm having...not on the machine right now so can't give reliable details.

I think this is beyond me, unless someone wants to make a step by step tutorial. :(

Once I run compiz-manager, XFCE menu's don't seem to work, when I click the desktop I can still see the old theme/window manager for a split second...

This is such a shame, I wish I knew enough about Linux/Compiz to fix it myself, but I don't. From what I've seen so far, it seems to run incredibly smoothly, and this machine is only a 1ghz P3 running a geForce 3 Ti200, I've not even tried to get it working on my main machine yet.

It's kinda funny, the guys at work were saying how gorgeous Beryl/Compiz looked from looking at YouTube videos and the (lame) version that comes with Ubuntu, being able to show fully blown Compiz Fusion on a lightweight distro like Puppy would completely blow them away.

CB88, how did you get yours to look like IceWM? The XFCE standard thing is seriously clunky from my POV, I'm used to IceWM and love it to bits.

C'mon guys, help the newbie impress the Puppy doubters at work...

That's a problem with the Pinboard (since Puppy-2.14) and as I don't use icons I always disabled it in the '/root/.xinitrc' file. This is not a problem in big distros cause they don't use the ROX Pinboard. But if you want icons(without Pinboard) try xfce-4.4.1 and add the command 'killall ROX-Filer' as an Autostarted Application

Code: Select all

xfce4-autostart-editor

Maybe NOP-301 + CompizFusion?

how to install compiz (detailed):
-----------------------------------------------
compiz can be used without a desktop environvent but it is much less friendly so use xfce

the black theme in my video is was actually selected by MU's theme chooser that is in EZpup I think it was the last theme in the list but just try them out and see what you like...

install xfce 4.4 from here : http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=22770

-----------------------------------------------
setup nvidia card
install the driver package
refer to the first post

and opengl or mesa in the first post

after you have installed the driver you need to configure it:

press ctrl+alt+backspace

type:
nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --allow-glx-with-composite --disable-glx-root-clipping --render-accel --composite --depth=24

press enter

type xwin then press enter
-----------------------------------------------
install dependancies:
refer to the first post
-----------------------------------------------
install compiz
refer to the first post
----------------------------------------------
how to edit /etc/profile :

open a terminal
type mp /etc/profile
go to line 40 (don't count them read the next part :) ) or the line that says
export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1

place a pound caracter at the begining that line. you will notice that at the bottom left of the mp text editor that it show the line number that you are on....in (horizontal, vertical) or (x,y) format with out the parenthesis and the number of the last line in braces like [this]

press crtl+s to save then ctrl+q to exit

-----------------------------------------------
how to stop the rox-filer pinboard from running:

I aready said that you need to edit the hidden file /root/.xinitrc if like to open it like this

open a terminal and type cd /root
then type mp ./.xinitrc

that will open the a startup script...

place a pound caracter at the begining of lines 89 through 135 you will notice that at the bottom left of the mp text editor that it show the line number that you are on....in (horizontal, vertical) or (x,y) format with out the parenthesis and the number of the last line in braces like [this]

that is the "correct" way to stop the rox-filer from showing the backgound although wow's is a little easier it is a little hacky since rox has to run and then gets killed imediately.

---------------
Instaling themes:

to install a them just open the emeral theme manager and import a theme file it seems that emerald is still compatable with older beryl/emerald themes an emerald theme is named like this: "themesname.emerald"

I think I was using the default beryl theme in that video...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
What to do if you have no window borders

did you do the /etc/profile edit correctly?

if so the try runnning emrald --replace

I think that is the correct option if it says that another window manager is running or is giving some metacity error try to find compiz-manager and the references in that script to metacity and change them to emerald or emerald --replace

I not sure those instructions are perfect since I not in puppy right now but I think they are...

if all else fails you can move the windows by pressing alt and draging them and closing them from the panel with right click....

I think I've made slight headway, thanks to the help of wow and cb88, thanks guys.

There's one big problem left though...

I have NO window borders.

I mean, I've nothing to grab to move the window...nothing to grab to resize said window...nothing....

NOW what's wrong with the damn thing?

I've FINALLY got this working also.

Working with ATI Mobility Radeon 9000.

I'll post a HOW TO for enabling DRI/AIGLX for Radeon later tonight or tomorrow. Maybe wow can link that up on the first post in this thread.

At the very least, out of all the "eye candy stuff", I'd love to see the puppy xorgwizard grow to the point where it can get DRI/(AI)GLX going for Radeon and nVidia cards

Thanks once again all, the lack of window borders only happens when Compiz isn't running.

I have now added a...

Code: Select all

sleep 5 && compiz-manager &
line to .xinitrc, which starts Compiz on auto, adding the line without the sleep parameter didn't work, would just be left with a black screen.

The only niggle I have left is that the Compiz Config doohicky won't load. :?

Got all this working just in time, will be taking my Puppy machine back in to work tomorrow, where it's supposed to be (brought it home for the weekend to tweak & tidy), this is gonna blow em away!

Paul-B

P.S. If anyone has any idea how to get the Compiz Config thingie going, it'd be much appreciated.

install python 2.5 that was uploaded for beryl worked fine for me...

wow's .pet is here http://hosted.filefront.com/rockinfreak/1920224 he states in the first post that you need python for the config to work

you might wanna get a copy of his default keyseting the link is beside the download for compiz

note the .pets for pygtk py....etc at this location are out of date use the once from grafpup...

edit: It only happens when compiz isn't running?....well that may mean that the fallback wm is set wrong.... or somthing like that

so emerald is running when compiz is running if so GREAT!!!

Seems to be a problem with your xorg.conf file. To solve it try to remove the existing xorg.conf file:

Code: Select all

rm -f /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Run "xorgwizard", choose Xorg, and reconfigure the nVidia card for Compiz Fusion:

Code: Select all

nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --allow-glx-with-composite --disable-glx-root-clipping --render-accel --composite --depth=24
Start X and run 'compiz-manager' again.

Hi wow, and thank you for helping me out. I haven't bailed on this, I've just been so busy I don't get alot of time to work on it.

Just to be on the safe side, to make sure I had done everything right, I deleted my old pup_save file, and its friends, and started fresh.

Here are the notes I made while going through the install.

Code: Select all

installed mesaglut

installed drivers
(ran the nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --allow-glx-with-composite --disable-glx-root-clipping --render-accel --composite --depth=24 command)

restartd X

installed xfce (the checking dependencies part took quite a while, about 5 minutes)

rebooted

dropped back to cmd prompt

started xfce4

installed compiz.pet

edited the line in etc/profile

rebooted
as before, xfce will run, but this time it is running in a very low resolution and color mode

and glxgears reads

Code: Select all

# glxgears
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual
I know this is probabaly a stupid question, but I need to be using xorg as the xserver correct? Well, when I try to run the xorgwizard, I get the "monitor and card compatible" dialog, but no matter what resolution and color depth I select, it's still a no-go.

Again the xorg.conf is the same as before, and compiz-manager still returns what it did before.

Here they are again, just in case.

Code: Select all

# compiz-manager

I started out with an Ati 9250, and fought and fought to get 3-d accel going on it (this went on for about a year), and finally gave up, and switched to nvidia. It appears as though I pretty much wasted my time and money, as still I cannot even get xorg, much less something like compiz-fusion. Other distros like PCLinuxOS work all fine and dandy, they're all just too heavy for my liking, and I keep coming back to the pup. But here I sit seeing all these people getting it going on Ati's now, and I can't get anywhere with my "oh-so-linux-friendly" nvidia card...

I'm feeling a bit dejected right about now...

Yup were wobblin' on the geforce2 and 6200 (6200 needed to use nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --allow-glx-with-composite --disable-glx-root-clipping --render-accel --composite --depth=24 )

I got acceleration on intel but no dri apparently very strange

Well, here's the newest on this...

I tried the other recommendation, the wNOP.iso.

At least on this one I get the nvidia driver logo right beofre X crashes...

Here's all I can gather on it, thanks to anyone who can make any sense of all this...

About the best I can get is to run xorgwizard, and select xorg, then do the driver select, and accept what it gives me (the test never results in the dialog box) after which I run the nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-and-whatever-else-switches-there-are..... and I get xfce to start, but at a very low resolution, see....
Image
the compiz settings manager will launch, as does the nvidia settings manager, yet it gives me no options whatsoever. Nothing remotely useful anyway.

When I use the settings panel, to try to change the resolution, I am given no options, no other resolutions to select from.

I do like the wNOP.iso better though, and would like to continue with this one, rather then the 301 I was previously attempting this on.

I appreciate the time you guys take to create these things for us, and the time you take to help us get it all going correctly. Thank you all.

Hey im the guy that did the video...

what video card do you have?
the regular puppy linux has more apps in it than NOP(nearly office pup) and NOP has XFCE built in (you can add XFCE to puppy with an .sfs module) NOP also has opera browser (my fav right now)

I myself see nothing amiss in your xorg.conf but I am far from being experienced and finding problems in xorg.conf

when compiz starts it should not say anything about XGL cause it is not there AIGLX is used.... so that is really wierd

what driver did you try? the 9xxx driver works on my Geforce2 and the 100.xxxx driver on a geforce 6200 that i tested

the main thing is that more info is needed

Well I had been using the 100.xxxx driver until I saw one video, where the guy went throught the whole setup, and he used the 96xx driver, so I decided to give it a go, and have gotten further with it than before. Now I can access the nvidia panel, and have plenty of options, and the settings manager gives me multiple resolutions. Sooo, I'm thinking this is the right driver, but I may be wrong.
Here's how I got this to happen:
I found on the wNOP thread a user had posted his xorg.conf file, and mentioned intel onboard graphics had been removed. So, I drop to cmd, run xorgwizard, selecting compiz at the end of it, then copy his xorg.conf over the one the wizard generated, and I get the options I mention above, at a 1024x768 resolution. Yet still no wobbly (or emerald theme). But we're getting closer! I have to hit the bed for tonight, but I'll check on this in about 7 hours.

Thanks again everyone.

Here's the new xorg I'm using:

that is a rather hacky solution... I think i posted that .conf...

anyway if you have X working now open up a terminal and type compiz-manager and enter...

if that fails type glxinfo and enter

then glxgears

post the results of each

also you haven't told us yet what card you have other than it is nvidia I suspect that is is an geforce 4 or 5 series since it "works" with both drivers

My bad man, on not posting the card model. I did post it on page 2 (my first post on this thread), but I guess it wouldn't have hurt to add it in here again on page 3. The card is a 6200. I have always had some issues with puppy still seeing and trying to config the intel onboard, so when I saw that this .conf file had the intel configuration removed, I figured it would do some good, and I guess it did a little. Anyway, I'm rambling, and I gotta get ready for work, so here's the results that you asked for. And again, thank you for helping me so much!

Holy crap! It's working! I just ran the compiz-manager and it's working!!!!!!! I was so tired last night, I guess it just slipped my mind!

I don't have time to play with anything else right now, as bad as I want to, but I will still keep an eye on this thread, so if anyone see's anything in the previous info, feel free to chime in, as I will still be following this.

And again, a huge thank you for all the people that have made this for us, and for helping us to get it going. Thank you thank you thank you!

I wanna toy with it so bad.... but alas, I owe, I owe, so it's off to work I go...

yeah It could be that you needed to reboot....

I think you did reboot but nvidia cards need 1min 30seconds to fully reset

so that may have been it

cool that you got it working man...
