Thanks....after the post I tried to get the distro to work....not joy, and it appears it's based on Puppy 3.0...which doesn;t support my printer(HP Laser4 Plus).

Guess I'll pass until 3.1 works on my system.

If I run the Live-CD version, (of Lighthouse215SeaM_Beta5.iso) is it possible to use:

lhp-mar-02_215.sfs 252 MB

..it appears it's based on Puppy 3.0...which doesn;t support my printer( HP Laser4 Plus)
I use both these (both based on 215CE) and a HP Laserjet 4MV which is similar
Do you have Open Office, Opera and Firefox, etc? If so the lhp-mar-02_215.sfs is working.
If not, is it in the same place as your save-file?
Have you tried CUPS print installer? A close match should work if the specific printer is not listed.

I like Xvesa, it works better for me than Xorg. I hope that Xvesa continues to be a part of puppy for years to come.

Never got far enough with it to test the Opera, etc....If I can't print, the distro is of little use to me. Yes, I tried the CUPS installer....the printer is not listed. What do you think might be a close match?

Actually, and I don;t have the skills to do it, I'd be happy to install the older version of CUPS that was in 2.17.1 ... it works, recognizes a lot of printers I may use.

Wonder if anyone has downgraded CUPS and and give me some hints.

I have yet to use a Puppy version where Xvesa doesn't work...on the other hand, in several of the distros, Xorg simply doesn't allow me to use the video that's build in to my motherboard.

I cannot find any reference to HP Laser 4 Plus, I assume you mean HP LaserJet 4 Plus?

Changing 215 Beta to final and 3.01 options

#27 Post by Barburo »

Hi Tazoc,
Sorry you're not feeling so well. I've been away for a couple of weeks. Here's some feedback for you.
1. Yes, do convert the 215beta as it stands to a final release. The only thing that doesn't work for me is that annoying blue square that icedock occasionally leaves behind. Restart Icewin and it loads properly. I have been using your 215Beta as my standard on my regular (ancient) desktop system for some time now and it appears to be quite stable. I use a 22" flat screen monitor and lhpuppy looks great!

2. Do a review of problems posted with 3.00 and 3.01. There are quite a few. Converting lhpup to 3.01 may be non-trivial. Looks like Barry has pursued rawpup rather than go for 3.02 for now.

3. My laptop (HP TX1000) only works (video and wifi) with puppy 3.01 - previous 2.xx versions of Puppy don't detect the wifi, and xorg doesn't work either. Xvesa doesn't give me the 1200x800 screen option that the HP TX1000 uses. 3.01 is the only puppy I can use for the laptop and hence I would be interested in a lhpuppy based on 3.01. I continue to have TX1000 laptop problems getting the 3.01 wifi to work in any consistent way (which is why I am eagerly anticipating 3.02 which may fix the wifi problems). It also has Vista and XP SP2 on it and they have no problem finding and connecting to my wifi access point so I'm suspecting the connect scripts in 3.01.

Thanks for your work - Lighthouse Puppy is the derivative that most closely matches what I require.

LighthousePup's Holiday Wishes from TazOC

#28 Post by tazoc »

Thank you all, I appreciate your support and feedback. :) I've been away from the forum and haven't managed any updates to Lighthouse in the meantime. I continue to use LighthousePup Beta 5 on all my machines, at times dual-booting into Kubuntu 7.10. Lighthouse 215 Beta 5 works so well for me I haven't felt motivated to upgrade it yet... patting self on the back.

For those needing a puplet based on a newer Puppy please look at these, in no particular order:

http://puppylinux.org/wikka/MuppyPuppy "Muppy"

http://www.ttuuxxx.com/ "Fire Hydrant"

Nice digest of current Active Puplets here:
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Puplets

My current 'wish list' is:
  • Release or re-label Beta5==>Final.

Improved support for the latest Xorg/XWindows 1.3? and nVidia-based display adapters. I haven't had time to test either on Lighthouse.

Loading SFS software add-on packs from LiveCD without rebooting. (Is this doable and realistic, or problematic?)

Streamline first 'Connect to the Internet' procedure.

KDE 4 after its official release. (Kirk's KDE 3.5.7 SFS file from Slackware 12 binaries works for me. http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=22805

Xscreensavers and Really slick screensavers. I enjoy Skyrocket, Lava Lamp, 3-D Engine and Molecule screensavers!

    Compiz-fusion or XGL effects.
It's been hard for me to keep going over the holidays. Hope yours are very happy!

Good to hear from you again! Hope you're feeling better. Did you get an HDTV for Xmas?
LHPuppy has become my daily OS of choice, booting from CD and/or flash drive w/wakePup boot floppy. I think you can say its final and move on when you are ready...
Thanks for your contribution to the wonderful world of Puppy!

WOW! Just fired up Lighthouse (~beta 4 I think) & must say very impressive! :)

Couldn't get the keyboard to work right though on a Gateway mt3705 lap.:( Dunno what it's about :? Some letters keys worked fine but others kept coming up with numbers. Tried a bunch of diff keyboard layouts but same results.

Gonna definitely have a closer look & spend more time on Lighthouse.

Hey, thanks!
Latest version is Beta 5. All so far are based on Puppy 215CE.
Re: keyboard problem, earlier Lighthouse Betas included 'numlockx' which enables the Numeric keys at start-up and was executed from /root/.xinitrc. I don't have a laptop and always wanted the NumLock enabled. In Beta 5 I disabled this by default to avoid the problem for laptop keyboards. Now it's an option in /root/Autostart/DisabledItems.

Hope that helps,

Puppy in HD!

Thank you Macadavy :)

My shoulder still hurts some, Doc increased my naproxen and wants me to go to physical therapy  I'm not looking forward to that but the higher dose is helping a little.

Yes, I found a 42" 1080P Panansonic Plasma at Sears OVERPRICED for half price, after rebates in November. Using it right now, in fact. It's connected to my PC via DVI to HDMI adapter cable.

The only downside I've found is the boot menu and console mode aren't visible on HDMI, so I also hooked up a VGA-Component scan converter. Now I boot up with TV set to the Component input and then switch to HDMI input when X Windows loads. The resolution and image quality via HDMI is outstanding. Lovin' my Puppy in HD!

Happy New Year,

All that wonderful LH eyecandy must be mind-blowing on a 42" HDTV - colour me green with envy! 8)

giordi63: You can find information about LHPuppy's SFS packages here:

http://www.lhpup.org/download.htm

Scroll down to: 'SFS (Squash File System) Software Expansion Packs'

TazOC: While at your site I read your most recent entry in the front page weblog.
It sounds like you're taking a well-earned break.
Will you continue development of the 'Mariner' SFS?

Thanks for your complement. Hope my write-up on the download page noted above helps. SFS files are great but not as user-friendly as maybe could be. Have to shut-down, making a pup_save file, reboot, refresh or 'fixmenus', etc.

@Macadavy, Good question about Mariner. I'm building LHP 3.0 from scratch. Just today ran a test build on a second PC. What I have so far includes Puppy v3(w/o SeaMonkey) inc. Abiword, 3DCC, OpenGL, DRI, SDL, FF 2.0.0.11, Flash9, Java, T-Bird, GIMPshop, GQView, Conky, Edit-SFS, Xine, XMMS, IceWM, all in a base ISO 199MB. Lots to do yet though before I can upload it. Little things missing, fine tuning, testing...

What excites me the most about this is I'm also running it with Kirk's cut-down kde357.sfs with my own themes, etc and it's so nice I want to merge that in as well (only ~50 MB compressed.) Although that means no Opera, KDE includes Konqueror, another web browser/file manager anyway. Full-mode KDE desktop is fast and really makes Lighthouse feel comfortable and complete. OpenOffice will still need to be an add-on SFS for those that need it. Oh, yeah need to test that, too.

Also I picked up and installed a used nVidia display adapter yesterday, so that I can test on both ATI and nVidia based systems.

Thanks for your response, Tazoc. I'm afraid I misspoke myself. I meant to ask about the proposed 'Voyager' SFS. Reviewing your response I see that what you wanted in that package, principally KDE, will find its way into a LHPuppy 3.00 - that's great and I look forward to it whenever it becomes available. Leaving OO in an SFS is best for those with memory-challenged boxes and can be loaded 'as needed'. Opera is an easy add on for those who want it. Updating LH to Puppy 3 level means all the Slackware goodies will be available, hopefully...
BTW - do you know how they created a script to permit encryption of the pup_save file in Puppy 2.17.1? That's an option I'd really like to have, but I've never seen it in any other Puppy version - how did they do it? Can it be offered at every shutdown, not just the first when the pup_save file is created? That is, even if you choose not to encrypt at first you would still have the option to do so every time you shut down.
Best wishes for the New Year, especially good health! :)

LighthousePup 3.01 Under Development

:) Yes, glad to know I'm on a reasonable track. Still might want to add Opera, not sure yet. Got to make sure Gslapt works, too. I updated my build from Puppy 3.00 to Puppy 3.01 yesterday. Hmm, probably need to start a new thread here soon...

I'm sorry I don't have any experience with encryption. I have the option at shutdown in LHP 3.01, but as you say only when first creating the pup_save file. You might search the forum for related posts. I think Barry, Pizzasgood and others have worked on that feature. I have not changed any of the boot scripts and only inserted pup_dip into the beginning of /etc/rc.d/rc.shutdown same as with LHP 2.15.
macadavy wrote:Best wishes for the New Year, especially good health! :)
Thank you. I really appreciate that. Puppy/LighthousePup is the main thing the gets me up in the morning.

As disability is my only income and much of it goes to health care related expenses I've been thinking about putting up a way to contribute via PayPal--purely on a voluntary basis. Although someone asked for a way to donate last year I hesitated because I do it for a hobby and I believe in free software, and there are frequent times when I'm not able be involved at all. Also I don't want anyone to get the idea that LighthousePup is not free. It is and always will be. And the core is pure Puppy and I encourage those who are able to make a donation to Barry. The link is on the left-hand panel at http://www.puppylinux.org. If it weren't for Barry and the Puppy team there would be no LighthousePup!
Take care, TazOC

LH Pup ver 3

#40 Post by Barburo »

Hi TazOC

I've been going back and forth between the two systems I run - my old 800MHz desktop and my laptop (HP Pavilion TX1000 twin AMD Turion64).

The reason I need to run both is that the laptop at full screen resolution can only run puppy 3.0x versions. I can get Puppy versions based on Puppy 2.xx to load onto the laptop only by using Versa (Xorg just won't work). Problem is they don't display very well. Otherwise I would just use the laptop and not have to fire up both.

I really like LightHouse Pup so it runs on the desktop machine (together with Muppy 080, Windows XP, and Ubuntu for comparison purposes :) ). I end up using Lighthouse for all my regular stuff and only occasionally need to boot one of the others.

The laptop runs Vista, XP, Ubuntu, Puppy3.01, and Muppy 080. I like what Mark has done so far with Muppy 080 and I use it the most on the laptop, but I keep coming back to Lighthouse Pup because everything seems to work, look and perform better.

If you manage to get a version of LH Pup working using Puppy 3.0x as a base I will be delighted to test it out, and give you feedback!

Barburo.
