No, I have a /usr/share/applications, but i don't have a /usr/share/applications.in.
And is there anything inside /usr/share/applications?

Yes, As normal as it could be but my desktop is still the same.

And if you click on a appX.desktop, does appX work? Try geany.desktop or something.

Using them from other puppy it works fine tell me if you need to test it on tahrpup.

I mean, you look in /usr/share/applications and click on some files there to see if that starts an application. Please test it.
And do the files there have an icon or not?

I'm using right now the iconless puppy.

In /usr/share/applications i click any .desktop and all works fine but none of them have icon.

I noticed i have an image that i can see using arcade puppy but here i just see this:

I don't get what do you mean. Maybe you think that what i wanted to transmit was anger.
if it's, completely wrong.

Anyway if nobody can give a better solution than just "BURY" this is ended.
What I mean is that I (ego, moi, me) am a grouch (a complainer, a critic) sometimes.

If you do not have a /initrd directory, this would mean that you have installed Puppy
as what is called a "full install". Forum member "bigpup" asked you this in the 2nd
post, and you did not answer his question, as far as I can tell.

Do you remember what type of installation you did for your tahr Puppy? There are
three types of installation possible for modern Puppies:
-- full
-- frugal with pupsave file
-- frugal with folder

Do you remember which one you used? This is important, because the procedure
to get back your icons will be different for a full install than the one I presented
previously.

Also, please answer MochiMoppei's question? Please reread his last paragraph
from his post here http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... ost#980506
and answer his question. If you have icons there or not will tell us a lot. TIA.

So it really is just the icons you are missing.
We are back at About #1 from Musher0.
You will need to copy
/usr/share/pixmaps
/usr/share/icons
/usr/local/lib/X11
from somewhere, because they contain most icons.
Instead of going to /initrd, you can go to the .iso of Tahrpup. By clicking you can open it and click on the puppy_tahr???.sfs to open it and continu to the 3 maps you have to copy. Copy these 3 maps in the right places.
Hopefully that will fix most.
EDIT: Musher0, sorry, I was writing while you posted.

Just another little test: if you click on a triangel on your desktop, does the application start?
It should because it is just a link to the .desktop in /usr/share/applications.

No problem, foxpup.

I think you are on the right path to a solution for this man.

Does that answer your question musher0?
Forum member "bigpup" asked you this in the 2nd
post, and you did not answer his question, as far as I can tell.
I answered him it was a full install you can see it from my second entry.

Code: Select all

root# googlechrome
/usr/bin/googlechrome: line 2: export: `GOOGLE-CHROME=/opt/google/chrome/google-chrome': not a valid identifier
Inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-open.c: 689: _dl_open: Assertion `_dl_debug_initialize (0, args.nsid)->r_state == RT_CONSISTENT' failed!
I could normally use chrome but after bleachbit this shows up.
And google chrome is not the only one there are a lot of other apps
that are not working.
Just another little test: if you click on a triangel on your desktop, does the application start?
as i say some of them are working but many others not.

I just downloaded an image to test and i couldn't see it from my image viewer.

this is more serious. even if i copy the icons from the iso provablely i wouldn't see it. Puppy does not let me see them but, as i say, at arcade puppy i can see all of them. Why?

All images are still there but actually nothing can see it.

I guess no app can show any single image
so this makes many apps not working well
Even bleachbit cant start.

According to this making this puppy recognize images again
could make this puppy work fine again?

I had to think about this.
The Mime types, or what is it called?, are unset. It must be something like that.
Maybe not. :?

Yes thank you lolo69 this answers the question.

Sounds as though the gtk/gdk system is broken.

Perhaps try the following:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache
Source: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... ost#722565

This will put the gtk/gdk caches in working order again.

Type the gdk-pixbuf...etc. line in a console and hit Enter.
What happens?

IHTH.

What a surprise!
It is getting funnier all the time... NOT.
Sorry

This is far out of my league. I've no idea what.

Does the menu hold even after reboot?

I've rebooted this like 50 times and it has not changed a bit.
