mikeslr, Nightingale ran for me but "Failed to load Shoutcast streams" in both 3HD and LupuPlus. There must be something we are overlooking.
People can of course go directly to shoutcast.com, but that is just one feature of Nightingale.

Earthray found this. It replaces flashplayer with gnome-mplayer (or other player at your choice). Anyone having trouble with youtube videos might want to try it. It is working for me.

Plus, many youtube videos will now automatically play with html5 if flashplayer is not installed. Flashvideoreplacer has an option to prefer html5.

Each of the flash installers has its own issues. After struggling with the installers for many months, I discovered that Grub4Dos worked, for me, all the time (with 5.2.x).

Thanks ilan, I think I will have to start using Grub4Dos as several people have now suggested it.
However, I am concerned that many newcomers may still try to use the universal installers and get into the same problems I did - then walk away from Puppy. maybe all we need is a good, easy tutorial that shows people like me how to use Grub4Dos just for one specific function - how to make a bootable usb stick containing a recent version of Puppy, so that we can leave our Windows HDD installation untouched. That way we can boot from HDD if we need windows, or put the usb stick in if we want to use Puppy.
Would you have time to list the steps you would use to create such a usb stick? (eg: which step comes first - Gparted, or syslinux, or fdisk or cfdisk or Grub4Dos???). It seems easy for people who have worked on such problems for weeks and months and developed their own methods, but not so clear for newcomers who are trying to follow basic steps.
I would like to find a foolproof method that works with a typical brand new FAT32 stick straight off the shop shelf.
Many thanks if you have time to list your method.

Good point, greengeek.
I think the univarsal installer is the root who confuses newcommers.
The 431JP returns 2012 has
Frugalinstaller for this reason.
The bootflash is a bit better than the univarsal installer.
The frugalinstaller is simple and easy. The bootflash is more and the univarsal installer is the most sophisticated and confusing.
Therefore, the 431JP2012 has 3 installers...

Yes, now I can understand why you made the FrugalInstaller (although I have not tried it yet). We need something similar that will be able to run on new puppies: - "Puppy5xx USBInstaller".
I am still investigating my usb boot problems - I really would like to learn exactly why my problems are occurring. When I know enough I will try to write a tutorial. I wish I could write an installer...but no chance of that. Still so much to learn.

Hi Playdaz,
I had the same result as you did with Three-Headed-Dog and LupuPlus. So I've noted that on its thread.
It's a nice app if it works.(':lol:'). When it works, it provides a complete music manager. But if SHOUTcast fails then it provides nothing not already available using pmusic.

Has anyone else noticed a huge hit on their free space using flashreplacer?
Does anyone have a fix, as while watching a few youtubes, my browser froze locking the PC necessitating a forced poweroff, as I couldn't get any access to regain control
I've added another 1Gb to my savefile, which is now a huge
4.7Gb with only 1.1Gb free!
btw I'm using Slacko, with Aurora 7.01, in case it makes any difference, and it crashes often with latest Flashplayer

you may want to move the gnome-mplayer cache /root/.cache/.gnome-mplayer. (it's hidden so press the eye) onto your harddrive, then symlink it back.
alternatively, i think that you can set the cache size in the gnome-mplayer options.

Well, to answer the question.
When is the Gecko-mplayer plugin ever used?
Using Firefox 12 browser, this video played using the Gecko-mplayer plugin.
(It actually causes Gnome-Mplayer to play the video)
In Firefox preferences->Applications
mpeg files is set to use
mplayerplug-in is now Gecko-mediaplayer.
Basically what this does is Gecko-Mplayer plugin makes the video stream to the Gnome Mplayer.
If I set mpeg files to use
Gnome Mplayer the video would download completely and then play. No streaming.

There is a pet of Songbird in the Lucid repo in PPM that does play shoutcast streams. I guess Songbird quit making a Linux version so Nightingale took that over.

For quick fixes of images and photos in my production environment I often use Paint.net. This program Pinta is extremely similar. i don't think it is more capable than mtPaint--and it is much bigger--but it is nicely usable. It is big because it is based on a Portable Linux App because it requires Mono to compile and that is a big mess as far as I m concerned.

Concerning GIMP 2.8. There is a version for Precise. But......
A PPA is available for installing GIMP 2.8 in Ubuntu Precise and Oneiric. But notice what is currently stated on its page, specifically regarding Oneiric:
This PPA could break your installed OS. There are dependency issues for Oneiric Ocelot (11.10). Only use it if you know what you do! There should be no problems in Precise Pangolin (12.04).

Unfortunately, as of now, there is no easy way to install GIMP 2.8 in older versions of Ubuntu. Mainly because GIMP 2.8 depends on many new underlying libraries which can't be found in the repositories of those older Ubuntu versions. Thus, you would first need to compile those libraries and then go for compiling GIMP itself, and that would obviously require a lot of work. However, it is theoretically possible if some of the enthusiasts decides to port GIMP 2.8 to those older versions of Ubuntu.

I don't understand. I just installed LupuPlusLibre528.005-2 and the GIMP 2.6.10 .pets, program and help, and the help works fine without this gvfs-backends .pet. Huh?

Installed Seamonkey 2.8 from Quickpet.
Did an internal update to 2.9.1 by Help->Check for Updates.
Seems to have updated OK.
