Firefox 3.X worked in Puppy 4.12 and 4.31 for me.

The problem is that FF3.X is big and slow on lower end hardware. On my system, FF 3.6 takes something like 40 seconds to load, and is perceptibly sluggish when up, with delays between selecting a menu choice and the action actually being performed. (My box has an 867mhz CPU, 256MB RAM, and a 40 GB UDMA 4 HD) Load speed is better in 4.31 than it was on 4.12, because I shifted to an ext4 file system when I upgraded. Firefox 3.6 is a minimal install with a subset of the extensions I normally use to reduce overhead.

In Windows, I run the current 3.6.4 FF version, but the Windows box has a 2ghz CPU, UDMA 6 hard drives, and 4GB of RAM. It can run FF 3.6 acceptably. The Puppy box can't.

To the extent that I browse from the Puppy box, I use SeaMonkey 1.1.19 in a "static" build. It's old and will not be maintained or enhanced further - 1.1.19 is an end-of-life release - but it works for what I do and I don't grow old and gray waiting for things to happen.

I'd advice skipping over FF 3.0.X. That release series had some nasty memory leaks that were squashed in 3.5.

Firedog is a very nice browser

But I wish there was a no frill just for browsing FireDog

I have no need for chatzilla, RSS, Mail etc

I agree with Dennis's post above (Seamonkey 1.1.19, from which I'm posting, is a very good browser indeed IMO) but I'd also add that it's worth trying Opera too, especially the 10.10 pet which has been made of it. It does most if not all of what Firefox 3 can do and in my experience is also faster.

It's got some great features too; the ones I particularly appreciate are the ability to turn off images and fit text in a text window to its width "on the fly" without having to adjust the relevant options in the "Preferences" menu.

I have read in Mozilla forums that Firefox 3xxx uses less ram than Firefox 2xxx but I am not sure....

Firefox 3xx is also more secure...

On one of my puppies, 4,31 booted off a flash drive, FireDog goes away and I have to nuke it and reinstall every other time i use it, any ideas?

Does it disappear during your session or on reboot?
If it vanishes after a reboot, I'd double-check your pup-save file is not full after installing Firedog.

Maybe try renaming the firedog pet to .tgz and extracting it to a mounted partition...

Firedog is essentially Firefox with a million addons.. plus a customised, minimalist GUI..

But I think I will make a new Firedog soon, based on FF 3.6**
So people need to tell me what they like..

Maybe only a minimal GUI (as before), with Flash10+Flashbock+NoScript... ?

You might also try to make a FireDog based on the latest Firefox 3.7 Trunk build as an experimental build

Which one are you talking about? Cos I installed the most popular image switcher thing and it worked fine for me..

When I open file types / manage in preferences I see no way to change the default for pdf files.

I played around with the settings and figured it out, thanks anyway!

I second all that, especially the low RAM requirement.

Small is good where Puppy's concerned IMO; you can always add more addons etc. if you want them, but it's hard to know what to "strip out" if a program is too big or unwieldy.

Where do you change preferences in FireDog such as which pdf editor to default to?

There is a better add-on then image switcher called quickimage that lets you switch images on, off , or block 3rd party.

About changing the PDF viewer, This is done somewhere in the Preferences manu, I think in the "Applications" tab.. Not on Firefox/Firedog at all at the mo (Kameleon, on XP)

Now gmail won't let me see the text box, all I get on compose mail is the to: and subject boxes and a way to add attachments, any ideas?
