Hi guys check out this window manager, I compiled tonight, "HDE2" Its like Vista and even gives you previews of windows when you hover your mouse over the taskbar. Too bad its Qt based and runs a bit slow and needs a lot of configuring.
Well heres a screenshot, oh ya the taskbar menu button that opens the menu which is about 40% transparent and it has application history listed on the menu.
Its only around 3mb extracted plus the Qt libs. I hope one day we'll get a menu on icewm hacked into it like that :) Any developers up to a challenge?

OK, Guys!

Time to play. :D I have uploaded most pieces in the main post. There is still some work to do, but it's time for testing and feedback. You can now convert your Puppy to be equal to the screenshots in the main post.

technosaurus
The wallpaper for this theme is not settled yet. But remember, Whodo is the one to decide what wallpaper to use.
WhoDo wrote:Bottom line is that around 50% (my guess only) of users install Icewm straight away, or prefer a puplet that uses Icewm.
I hope Puppy 4.2 includes a polished and refined jwm desktop like this one. If we then see that 50% of the Puppy user base are installing icewm, - you win. But if not ....

Thanks for all the feedback!

I'm ready for the hounds

Sigmund, do you want bug reports here?

I think you have done a good job of integrating things together and given a good demonstration of jwm.

Currently using the top tray editor seems to set every icon as a star.

The jwm-theme is missing the window and tray images.

Not bug, more a question. The wallpaper is currently sized for a widescreen rather than a 4:3. Would a default of 4:3 be more sensible for puppies target audience?

keep up the good work

Come on, there must be more bugs.

After installation:
- Run 'fixmenus' in terminal.
- Restart X to update new rox settings.

The wallpaper is just in the middle of widescreen and 4:3.

again, not a bug
I was expecting the quit button on the tray to open a dialog of choices shutdown, restart, kill X etc. Instead it shuts down instantly, I know this is what I told it to, but I've got used to being nagged and molicodled by computers that are just trying to protect me from myself.

I seem to remember a few people have built dialogs for this scenario, ttuuxxx?

Hi zigbert,
No entry for your snazzy icons in 'desktop icon switcher'
Ran 'fixmenus', restarted x.

Does anybody know how to change the appearance of programs like Xdialog? Them being white in Puppy 4.x really annoys me :)
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

You welcome guys :)
Xdialog colour scheme is controlled by your GTK2 theme in use, if you install one of these that trapster posted a link in the GTK2 themes section
http://jp.bizet.free.fr/themes/gtk2.html
it should change the colour. You can do it manually also by hacking your default gtk2 themes.

I have come up with a new design for the web desktop to transition to 4.2 - currently I am using a modified version of the background since there has been a fairly decent consensus on it. I tried out the icons but it looked too busy with the current layout which is set to accomodate smaller screens.

http://pupweb.org/desktop/42.htm <--its not finished so I have it here

You might notice a new feature "install" - this is my answer to a puppy repository - I am only putting packages that will work out of the box with an official puppy install (all dependencies are met with no other packages) I have been going through the forums looking for these (petch would not help in this situation) and if they aren't available I have been repackaging them with their dependencies. I know a lot of unnecessary files will be downloaded but it will make installing packages almost too easy - basically like my understanding of click 'n run (though I have never used it) I know that this is supposed to be an official release so I thought I might mention it in case there was any objection to a "non-official" repository on the start page

That could also be good to have on the thread for Dingo Icon Themes.

This is both a simple and easy to include upgrade that will make a huge jump in comprehensive ease of use and useful features for 4.2

Just to remind Warren - the html file that technosaurus is creating is renamed home.htm and placed here:

Code: Select all

usr/share/doc/home.htm
Good job technosaurus - less cllutter, plus one click for extra programs - sounds good to me :)

I pumped this through the w3c validator and it got a bit grumpy.

I have fixed the markup to be valid HTML 4.01 Transitional and added Open Street Map to the mapping options.

Main complaints from the validator concern
missing alt tags
duplicate definitions of id="menu", I have replaced this with class="menu" you will need to replace references to #menu in the css file to .menu instead.
use of the background attribute, I have replaced this with style="background-image:url('Desktop_files/clear.png')"

hope this is helpful

IMHO the semi-transparent menu background makes it hard to read the text over an icon, you might consider making clear.png more opaque.

@ HairyWill - I appricate your help - This is the first page I have designed from scratch since 1997 so the more extra eyes on my code the better. I still haven't verified compatibility with all browsers yet (I know ie6 doesn't work) thanks

@ Lobster - I will make a pet package and a separate modified page to be included in 4.2 - I want to include links to all of the local documentation - especially the internet connection help, file:/// (as "my computer"), file:///root/my-documents (as my documents) and a link to the online version so that updated web apps and pet packages will be available by simply refreshing the page. Barry has also created a script that refreshes an info page with online support for installed packages- if possible I would like to incorporate it somehow too or at least its functionality.

@ Zigbert - thanks - I just wish I had your graphics abilities - it took me almost an hour to figure out how to make a translucent 1 pixel png.
