Hi dave, don't worry its not 2.14X fault, lol about 1/2 ago I booted-up a fresh clean puppy 3.01, I ripped out glib, gtk, pango,Cairo, dbus, gio, and finally tossed in the latest Rox and switched over the deps. Then copied over firefox crossed my fingers and it open perfectly, lol so I went to my site to the link you posted and your right my banner looks like crap, I didn't transfer over libpng so we know its not 2 series backend, must be firefox.

wireless

#1699 Post by Minnesota »

ttuuxxx:
Wireless for me has problems. By default still loading is zd1211, If you remmod zd1211 this version now contains a version of zd1211rw somewhere however if you run it.. the wireless does not show in the wizard.
An attempt to load the zd1211rw inside the wizard, gives a message that it is already loaded but network will not show as activated.

Load from the old pet... that version of zd1211rw.. and still no action.. even after reloading x. OK... if you unplug the adapter and replug it will finally be recognized.

Definably different and strange behavior between these versions... I am using 11.

Printer works as default but does now show as separate printer in abiword which is OK, but a bit misleading... I think 9? it showed... would have to go back and test...

If you choose not to make zd1211rw the default, can you still have the newer version in a directory, so we do not need a pet?

Thought so... blinky not showing yet we have a wireless connection.

:(

Hi Minnesota, hows it going ?

I've mentioned in the past I don't use wireless, but I'm willing to do what it takes to get it going for you guys, That said, do you have config script that works, That only blacklist the other older one, If so could you tar.gz it and post it, I'll add it for the next release :)
Thanks

Zydas ZD1211 wifi devices

Puppy versions 2.12, 2.13, 2.14, 2.15CE, 2.16
contain the opensource zd1211rw driver.

But apparently there is a more recent B version of the Zydas chipset which is not supported by this driver, at least in early kernels, anyway.
So Puppy versions 214R and 214X
contain the zd1211 and zd1211b "Vendor-based community drivers" instead.

The situation becomes more complex, though, since it seems there are some variants of the Zydas chipset ...
possibly the versions released after Atheros bought out Zydas and renamed the chipset "AR5007UG" ...
which won't work with the vendor driver.
So here is the (normal) opensource zd1211rw driver

Once installed, there will now be 2 drivers trying to claim the same device, it may be necessary to unload the one you don't want, before loading the one you do want, like this -
Code:
rmmod zd1211b
modprobe zd1211rw

Now it will be necessary to run the Network Wizard.

Updated with core wifi (ieee80211) modules, July 30 2009.
zd1211rw-k2.6.18.1.pet
Description for Puppy 214R & 214X
pet
Download
Filename zd1211rw-k2.6.18.1.pet
Filesize 69.2 KB
Downloaded 41 Time(s)
Is this what you are looking for. I can also say new 4.xx series has the right driver loaded.. as well as 2.17 If I remember right.. don't think the 214 series ever by default was right.

Busy yesterday with VB... relative "discovered" VB only knows qbasic... bit of shock - "event" programming :). Yesterday created ACCESS program of his application, then converted it to run in EXCEL as VB in the background is close. Need to get back to looking in Koffice....and database.

Just a suggestion... you can pick up a USB dongle for around $20.00... or a card....I like the dongles....will give you method to test WIFI. Many of the cheaper ones... especially Airlink and Hawking sticks use zydas chipset.

ttuuxxx, you are so funny taking apart other versions. you must work on a thousand different things everyday. I have no idea how you have time to do it all.

so i am confused now also. whats your plan for now. go back to x9, fix dave's list and release version 11.1... or something like that?

how are the puppies doing?
did you see barry's blog about a smaller gtkhash? something fun to distract you :D

Well I've been out but just came back and tried it again. Still doesn't render correctly. As it's ok in Dillo and Opera 10, all on 214X11, and it does using IE7 and FF 3.0.4 under windows XP and SeaMonkey under ttuuxxx's version of 421 I doubt it's my machine but likely a FF prob. Are you using a frugal install?

Is there some setting that could be causing this? I have java and javascript enabled and also blocking pop-ups enabled.

Cheers
Dave

Hi again dave, it's a frugal install, no pup_save, nothing installed except my wireless driver. no settings changed on firefox just straight to the forum then ttuuxxx's site via your link followed by a couple of screen grabs with the excellent pupshots.

Hi Minnesota

I have a wireless 4 router and plus 3 new wireless cards collecting dust, lol I have it disabled because I just don't trust the security of wireless, when I first got it, I tested for open connections and found some locally. Basically with my wife's pc being windows, I just don't trust it.

I'm also feeling pretty good now :) took about 2 weeks to get over it, still not eating spicy food and drinking a lot less coffee, was drinking about 4L of coffee a day. lol now its like 3L of tea, and 1/2L of coffee.

Yes back to V9, update less, move forward :)
The puppies are doing really well and getting very solid.
I read/replied about gtkhash at Barry's blog :) Thanks for letting me know.

wireless and download

#1711 Post by Minnesota »

Boy download is slow... on 301x1.... 14KB... will kill and try later.... More fun to play with.

Glad you are feeling better.. was on Maalox and coffee for a while years ago.. not a good thing... at all.....

If you have local wifi to look at, it at least will give you an idea in puppy that it works or doesn't work...and the possibility of getting on..... when you kill the CD install from puppy nothing will get on your local network... forget the router... you don't need that (unless you want to test it)....no reason to be connected to the other computer...

And unless you enable the LAN connection, your PUPPY test machine will never see your wife's machine.

Are you hooked to the wife's machine with a cat 5 LAN?

On mozilla (FF 3.5.2/SM 2b1, synth's 090702-build) rendering images in certain pages in a rather peculiar way.

It seems like (sometimes only parts of) images are randomly overlayed on certain pages, www.ttuuxxx.com is one example of a page that is much more prone to cause this behaviour in Puppy's mozilla browsers than other pages.

I had this issue much more frequently in 4.2.1 during its development, using the built-in SM, even when just browsing this forum. Not only images viewed in the browser, but also bits and pieces from Puppy's "graphics cache" - don't know if there is such a thing, but that's how it seemed.

Haven't noticed this issue in 2.14X up until now when, after reading the posts here, decided to check ttuuxxx' page out. Your page is certainly not the only page that exhibits this beaviour, but the pages that do are rather rare for FF 3.5 and SM 2b.

When I first noticed this strange overlaying of random graphic shrapnel I suspected a full SM/FF cache - cleared it, restarted, but it didn't sort the issue out - then I thought that it might be caused by my, somewhat, resource challenged system - but, then again, I don't get problems of this kind when running FF 3x in the much more resource-hungry XP SP3 on the same machine.

I'll attach a few screen-shots to illustrate what is happening while viewing some pages in general, and specifically www.ttuuxxx.com.

I had, as always, a lot of forum tabs open in FF, checked out ttuuxxx.com, decided to check with SM 2b1 --> first snapshot.
(Ok, I had viewed the page which is the origin of the graphics, in another window, closed at the time of the snapshot).

Closed SM and FF after clearing their respective caches, continued by opening FF 3.5.2, restoring the tabs, and took snapshot 2. Notice, in particular the lower left corner of an already closed geany window I had had open in another virtual desktop !

Third and last snapshot is just to rub it in a bit :).

The specific combination of "graphic elements" that compose any given image is rather random, if I scroll the image out of view and the back, there's mostly a new surprise combination :?.

Sorry for the overly long post, but I think that the issue is more fundamental to the Puppy/mozilla-combo than what could be gathered from the previous posts on this matter above.

As I said before, I do not suffer from this problem very often any longer, some pages out there still stirs FF 3.5 up but, if I want to delve into it I go to ttuuxxx.com :P :D :D :D.

For those of you that read through this post, all the way down here - Cheers  :D.

Posting this from 301 X , it does use more memory than 214 X...but not any worse than the regular releases.

Ttuuxxx's site renders fine from this FF 3.5.3 and I'm running live w/ no save, no tweaks.

Another toy to play with........
