Installed libevent, just to check.

No joy.

I now have an install and savefile absolutely identical to the one I had before, except that now I cannot print.

I'm all ears, when you decide to step back into the office.

EDIT: seriously, you're actually holding up a project of mine by continuing to ignore me. Not cool, bro.

Solved.

I'm interested to know more details about whether the solution was satisfactory or not, and if so, how. My day job is to connect/repair printers and troubleshoot their connections to Windows, Mac and Linux computers and I'm trying to learn more about the intricacies of CUPS etc.

The need to interface to Evernote seems like something beyond simply adding a printer driver, but it is similar to the "windows focused" needs of some of my clients so I'm just keen to hear if you got it working. (either partly or not at all).

Many devices today are multifunctional so I try to learn as much as I can about what makes the printer work, what makes the scanner work, and what makes the email (smtp) connection work etc etc so any info is good info...

cheers!

Evernote compatibility is actually handled by the printer itself, as part of being a networked device. It connects to the Web via WiFi and does its thing that way. The setup utility is called 'Brother Web Connect'.

As for posting what solved the problem... after the way I was treated by rcrsn51 I'm going to have to think about that. Suffice to say for now that there was a dep nobody told me about.

Reposting from the bug report in Quirky 7.0.3:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic ... &start=600

I have a Brother HL-1435 printer. I installed the printer successfully in Puppy, but the procedure does not seem to work in Quirky 7.0.4.1. The procedure is described in the first post of this thread.

The error message I received in CUPS was:

"Filter failed"

I have deleted and re-installed the printer several times, to no avail. It's just Quirky where I'm having this problem; I'm not having this problem in any other distribution I'm using.

P.S. This is a local printer connected through USB. CUPS has no trouble recognizing this printer. However, I continue to encounter the "Filter failed" error.

Is there any info in /var/log/cups/error_log ?

EDIT : as suggested by Daniel below this should have been /var/cups/log/error_log

I'll post the error log entry when I get the chance.

I'm thinking this might have to do with the fact that I'm using a 64-bit version of Quirky.

Still investigating the problem.

by DanielSong39
My latest theory is that the filter is not supported by Quirky 7.0.4.1. Here is the relevant line from the .ppd file:

*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-postscript 0 brlpdwrapperHL1430"

Any way to customize Quirky so that this filter is recognized?

Posted: Fri 15 May 2015, 19:07
by DanielSong39
I think the problem is due to the inability to execute 32-bit binaries, as shown below:

D [11/May/2015:20:40:50 -0400] [Job 1] /usr/lib/cups/filter/brlpdwrapperHL1430: line 120: /usr/local/Brother/cupswrapper/brcupsconfig: cannot execute binary file

Is there a way to configure 64-bit Quirky so that these binary files can be executed?

You need 64-bit binaries. There is no real way around that in Puppy.

by DanielSong39
Well, at least I may have been on the right track while trying to install glibc32-2.20 on Quirky. Alas, that corrupted the system and I had to re-install from scratch.

I'll either need to get a printer with 64-bit support or use other distributions that support 32-bit binaries (i.e. Puppy).

CUPS & 64bit Just-Lighthouse 64

Should I expect Debbi, etc to play nicely with Just-Lighthouse64 or will some customization be required, please?

I can access my Brother HL-2275DW from a laptop with the old Lighthouse64-602 version and one with Carolina 13 but this one does not recognize it at all.

Should I go ahead and follow all of the Debbi steps on this one and just see what happens - or might that make a mess I'll have to try to undo ... you know me ... ;-)

Thanks ...

Only rcrsn51 can answer that for sure, and he appears to be on sabbatical right now...

Offhand, though, I'd say you're likely to make a mess. If it's a 32bit package generally speaking it won't work on 64bit stuff.

He;s usually been able to sort things for me in the past.

I'll have to look for any notes I may have kept from when I got printing working in the old Lighthouse64.

Thanks ...

Brother HL-2275DW only has 32-bit support for Debian; you need a Fedora-based distribution to get the 64-bit support.

http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... edirect=on

You may be out of luck.

That cannot be correct.

I already have access to the Brother printer from my 64-bit install of the older version of Lighthouse64-602.

I just need to know how to get it to work with this newer version.

Later today I will search in the slight hope that I saved some notes as to how I got it working on the older 64-bit install.

Somewhere on this forum is a utility called rpm2pet that may be of use. I recall that it needs another utility called unrpm...

If you can't get ahold of it here I have both and can re-up.

But they are 32bit PETs so I cannot guarantee function in a 64bit Pup.

I have the ppd file and it's on this computer.

I've compared the cupsd.conf cupsd.confLPD and printer.confn and they are the same - other than the UUID in printers.conf

Not sure where to look next but the answer has to be somewhere on my old version of Lighthouse64 laptop ...
