No worries mate, i just felt it would be helpful.
Though if this thread was many more pages than it is, i'm not so sure i would have sat here this afternoon and re-read it.

Anyways, i'll do my best to keep on top of it from here on.

Oh, I have something new to post on this thread!

My hard drive crashed on my Toshiba Tecra, my favorite Puppy laptop!

But I had the save file and a lot of crucial files saved on another hard drive, dumped them to a specific external hard drive, then I was ready to get my laptop going again.

But my cd drive was crappin' out, then did, and I couldn't boot any other way, no usb (would only use usb floppy drive which I don't have).

But I had a DVD drive to put in there, yet here was the issue:

the Tecra would say IDE #1 ERROR with any of my cd or DVD drives I plugged in.

The answer? I had to connect pin 45 and 47, per instructions here. I used a piece of tin-foil.

DVD drive works, cd boots, finds save file on my external, I'm back in the game. 8)

I had that on a different brand
Turned out the solution was a firmware update needed, but I hadn't seen this tip before, thanks

The Gateway is a barebones MX3225 with a 1.5 Celeron.

All 3 laptops work seamlessly with Puppy. And the speed is fantastic. I save my configuration to the hard drives and that makes it easy to boot up and use Puppy.

There have been issues with the soundcards working especially on the Gateway which I'm looking into now.
If anyone finds this interesting I can submit more technical detail in a future post. I'm composing this on my Gateway currently.

An interesting thing, too, for me with Puppy. My Gateway has a built-in wifi via Realtek. This wifi regularly has disconnects when I boot up under Windows XP and have taken to using a pcmcia Linksys card which is more stable most of the time.

Under Puppy, I connect regularly with the Realtek wifi and have left the Gateway on for a whole day without getting disconnected once. For me, that's impressive.

For that alone, I love Puppy Linux.
I am about to put puppy 511 on a gateway mx3215 1.4 celron and 1 gig of ram. Has 40gig HD and I have another 40 gig HD that I cant use yet until I get the hook up.
But I had problems a while ago when I put LM8 on it. It has something to do with getting openchrome set up right. Took me about 4-5 days to get the screen resolution and sound right on mint.

So maybe we can bang around ideas on getting the sound right on the gateways..

Compaq Evo N160
1133 mz processor
512 mb ram
Specs Here: http://tinyurl.com/29x8fnu

5.1.1 runs well. I really like Macpup511 and Quickset runs well also. No problem with sound and my wireless card was easy to configure on all 3. Volume keys were easy to setup using Macpup and Fluppy but not on others.

Fluppy10 and pupflux have a problem with the screen being "dark". This has been solved by using xorgwizard and choosing vesa. As a plus, choosing vesa allows the scroll to work. This works on every puppy I've tried where the scroll button is not functioning on 8) .

Wary 120 configures my mouse and scroll button fine but it hosed my full install of 511. One must be careful, seems as though some puppies do not play well with others

Hopefully sombody can help you with that, but i'm afraid that i cannot.

When you eventually get that gateway mx3215 sorted out,
add another post with details and i will add a link to the wiki page.

I managed to get the sound right. Pretty easy actually.. Right click on the speaker select full screen and scroll down to external amp and uncheck it.

I feel stupid messing around for days with scripts etc. for nothing..LOL
I posted about this in the how to solutions section..

EDIT: Best Pups to use in my preferred order : Fluppy, Lucid, LightHouse, SnowPuppy

Suspend works will all the above with some tweaks, you can get lid suspend to work (oddly, this calls a different set of actions than using Fn+F2 so I changed the script in "actions" to call sleep.sh and I removed the part about not suspending on USB because oddly with a frugal install, it is the only way it wakes up properly). Suspend DOES NOT work if using the SD card slot for your install.

I believe the devs for Fluppy and SnowPuppy have built the wireless driver into the kernel now so that should work out of the box. With the devx and source, the ati driver builds if you don't want to use the open source readeon driver. Video is much smoother with this.

Personally I use SnowPuppy because it boots the fastest and if I choose to save my session, it also saves the fastest. It is also very light on its feet, er um, snow shoes.

Original post.:

Using Macpup 5.11 on a Asus 1201T Netbook... technically it is a Netbook but it is more of a sub notebook. It has a full sized keyboard and an AMD Athlon Neo 64 bit Processor. It is supposed to be one of the EEE series, BUT it differs in so many ways from the others (Celeron or Atom based) that PupEEE Linux doesn't offer anything over MacPup right now.

Non of the Fn keys work except for screen blanking. Sound does work, graphics works well, along with the basics.

It does not wake from suspend, but neither does any OS that is running from the SD Card slot.

I am also using PupEEE 1.0 on my ASUS 701 EEE Netbook... so well that I have it running off the SSD rather than USB 0r SD card. It does wake from suspend and all the functions work, but this version of puppy Linux was written for this group of EEE machines. It works better on this machine than anything else I have tried: Xandros, Ubuntu, EEEBuntu, XP. It just leaves a lot of the 4 GB drive available for other things:-)

squeeze had the screen issue when I used probe, but when I started over I did not do the "probe" for the video, there was a choose button so I selected radeon from the list and the screen was no longer faded.

running well on Toshiba Portege Ultraportables. My main laptop is the A100 model. Works also on the A200.

My preferred version is 431.

Wireless, sound and video all work perfectly. These are quiet, fast and portable puppy machines.

I have had Lighthouse Pup 443 installed on a Dell Inspiron B120 laptop for about a year. I have an infrequent problem with sound, but that doesn't bother me at all. Sometimes, it also disconnects from the network with no notice. When this happens I have to go back to redo the Network Setup and everything works for a couple of days.

I just installed Lighthouse Pup 443 on a Toshiba Satellite P205. It works great, except the arrow, Home, End, Insert, Delete, Page Up, and Page Down keys don't work at all. Backspace works.

Anyone have an idea how I can get the Toshiba keys working?

Add an acer TravelMate4060 to the "list"
1.73g centrinoM processor, 765M of Ram... Odd number that, but, that is what hardinfo shows!
Running a full install of Macpup 511... and everything is just as it should be!
I did run from dvd w/ a save file for awhile, again without incident. This box seemed to have problems with shutdown/restart with other puppy's, but not this one... hence the "full install".
Internet via built-in wireless, configured itself, and it's rock solid for the last couple of days. I mention this because sometimes other Puppies seem to drop the internet connection if left "unattended" for a time.

my Lap is (was  ) a new Fujitsu Esprimo mobile V6535, bought with 1 Gig Ram, 125 GB Hdd, 2100Mhz cpu, later changed Ram to 2 Gig

Parted hdd in several partitions, as on every other of my maschines also a swap partition. 3 Mainpartitions, 2xNtfs (winXPs) 1x ext2 (puppy 4.12 full), in Extended 3 NTFS-Datapartitions and 2 ext2 Partitions. Bootloader is Grub from puppy

On the Esprimo i try to build a new Puplet, base is Puppy4.12. So for some Progs I have to look in other Puppies, how its done there. Thats why, I have also a puppy 4.00, a puppy 4.3, a puppy2, all this frugal in the extended ext2-Partition.

But I'm not the user of the many extras. What I need is Wifi, and that didnt work with standard-Puppy 4.12 on the V6535 (all other Esprimos should work), because I didn't recognize, that this 6535 has a atheros_chip for Wifi, with a type, that is noch wide spread. After search in this forum, I had found the
"madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r3861-20080903-i486.pet"
and the
"pwireless-2-beta-2.9.pet"
Installing this both and the Wireless works fine and quick on the V6535.

Shure, Lan or boot from CD / from USB is no problem
Graphik works fine, no probs, no special parameters at boottime needed.

In the beginning, sound looks like it doesn't work. After throw the Mastervolume in the Mixer from zero to high, I can hear all
Puppy 4.12 standard puts n Error in /tmp/xerrs.log, that a parameter for Sound is not supported, because of this error the mixer is muted.

I never tested, if Puppy shows the Chatcam in the notebook, maybe it works but never needed.

So, since WiFi works, its a DreamTeam, the V6535, Puppy4.12 and me

hope it helps

Hi
Am using a Lenovo S10e (1.6G Atom, 2G ram) puppy 5.2. OS runs off a USB drive (is that a frugal install?). I connect via a wireless router. System works really well. I've compiled a driver for a Wand TV stick (AF9035 chip) and it works better than under windows.
Just bought an Optus 3g wireless modem which also works. Actually only problem I have is that if the machine is left for a few minutes, the network (both DSL or 3g) drops out. No big deal with DSL, but Optus measures data in 10M steps so I'll have to look into it.

Acer Aspire TimelineX 5820TG.
Works fine after upgrading BIOS to the latest version. Needs kernel 2.6.33 or newer. Also needs KMS setting at boot up or defined in puppy distro itself.
Lucid 5.1, 5.11, 5.2, Fluppy works fine.
Fluppy enables best the laptop buttons, even hibernate.
It has dual graphics, intel driver works just fine. I usually shut down ATI HD5650 cause it uses power as much as all the other devices together.

My laptop-001.pet works fine with this laptop and enables laptop buttons ok. Also I have acpi_call.ko for some kernels to shutdown ATI graphics with test_off.sh script placed on /root/Startup. If somebody needs those addons with this laptop, I can give spesific info.

I'm hardly new to Linux, but I've only just started playing with Puppy. I have a HP2133 VIA-everything chipset running on a 1GB micro-SD + adapter in the SD slot. My 120GB SATA has win7/Fedora 14 but I'm having issues with WIFI and fedora but so far Puppy has no problems with the Broadcom card. I have a USB bluetooth dongle and managed to setup my Nokia E75 such that I can use its GPS (http://www.symarctic.com/beta/index.php ... 105-201719) Next step: see if I can use the phone's GPS and GPRS modem via bluetooth without completely destroying the battery life of the phone :)
