I made a .PET of the nVidia legacy 173.14.37 driver with kernel 3.2.44 for Precise Puppy 5.6 here:-

peebee, and other testers,
I think I found why peebee had such trouble with the new driver. I corrected the cause in the firmware package, as well as making other bug fixes there. Please replace the previous version with the corrected version at the original place:

Booting 5.6 results in a blank screen with the monitor complaining "Input Not Supported". Adding "pfix=nox" to boot menu doesn't help. All recent versions, including 5.5, work OK.

Video card: Nvidia GeForce GT 520

zygo: many thanks for your comments. With Sky, they cloak their verbiage so that it becomes incomprehensible - I cannot even ascertain whether my friend is defaulted to IMAPI or POP. Their 'instructions' point to non-existent menus and options. Vince Cable got it right - this devil is in league with the Devil as well as the devil. No chance the proletariat will stop pouring their shekels into his coffers and avoid using his systems. Sadly, not all good things emanate from the antipodes...

Hi Richard

Same testing - pristine frugal install of Precise 5.6 k3.2.44 - install your 2 pets: new firmware + agere hda 11c1:1040 driver - reboot

lsmod shows both agrmodem and agrserial loaded

dmesg shows ttyAGS3 has been created

connect wizard shows ttyAGS3 available

HOWEVER

modem-stats -c ATI3 /dev/ttyAGS3

and

clicking the Test button in PupDial

both kill Precise stone dead - power off button needed to recover.

Would taking a camera shot of the screen after the crash help?

As you can see above, peebee reports that the HDA variant (agrsm-11c11040) of the driver crashes puppy. From the screen shot he sent me, I suspect the problem lies with the interface to the ALSA HDA driver or codec. I have not gone much beyond that, as I have not found clues, yet, on google.

The screen line of interest contains "findHDACodec+0x10/0x38 [agrmodem]"; 5 lines above it is "do_page_fault...". (I can use any help, at all, with this.)

But that probably affects only the HDA agrmodem driver. The two PCI variants should not have that problem, so need to be tested by someone who has one of the PCI Agere modems that use the drivers agrsm06pci or agrsm048pci.

Remember: they all require the new firmware_linux_module_agrmodem package.

Ok, removed from Precise.

1. Booting Precise-5.6 from CD-RW, with precisesave.3fs.
All looking good, and working well so far.
Looks like I'll be switching from Slacko to this as my number-1 Puppy.

2. Tweaks made so far:
a. Changes made so as to be able to choose if/when to save session changes back to the precisesave file.
b. Installed "Firefox-16.0.1-i686-up.
c. Installed PupsaveHotbackup-1.3.
d. Installed wine-1.4.
e. Updated PPM.
f. Installed thunderbird_17.0.6+build1.
g. Installed FoxitReader-1.1.0.
h. CUPS used to install "HP Desjet 840c".
i. Installed PupClockset-1.6.
j. /root/.jwmrc-tray edit to change xload display.
k. Installed pupsnap-2.1_scrot-0.8_32bit.
l. Installed smm-1.0.pup.
m. Thunderbird_17.0.6+build1 set up to use common profile held in /mnt/home/Mail.
n. Fixed Xfe "Open with..." problem [workaround].

When precise first boots, it does not recognize the sound chip, when I finally tick the front box in retrovol, I get sound, but not speaker icon.

Upon reboot, the settings for retrovol are not saved.

I've tried every option that alsa and retrovol offer for configuration.

What's really interesting is that Raring and Upup recognize the sound ship, the speaker icon is not muted as it is in Precise.

It seems that the "stock" precise distributions have the problem, while non-stock ones do not.

I'd rslly appreciate some help with this.

I updated ppm and then installed firefox-21, I installed kdegames and
digikam-2.50 as well.
I used getflash to install the latest flashplayer plugin.
Once kdegames or digikam are installed you get an error if you try to
change the password for spot or root.
Digikam created a menu entry under graphics but clicking on it doesn't
launch digikam, in 5.6 I was using gexec to launch digikam but it's
not included in 5.6.1 so I made a pet of grun-0.93 and it works fine.
I fiddled with the digikam desktop file but couldn't get it to start
from the menu icon.
That's it so far.

So far all looking good on my E732 laptop. Manual frugal to ntfs partition and booting with grub4dos from an ext2 SDcard.

Will use for a few days and report - feels faster than 5.6. My imagination ?

Successfully upgraded 5.6 using a "Precise-5.6.1" CD-RW disk.

Had to restore my changed wallpaper, and re-do the edit of the /root/.jwmrc-tray to change the xload display.
I wonder if anything else has been reset to default?
Time will tell.
