I've never encountered any of those issues.
Thanks for your interest, James, Some new features seem to crop up at every iteration with 'new' projects! As a good scientist, I only report reproducible results (just in case you wonder). If I get the chance today, I'll wheel-out my trusty(?) old 939 which guarantees different behaviour to almost everything else in my armoury.

Well-founded suspicions! 939 behaved very differently. Whether pfix=ram, or vesa, or ram,vesa the boot up black-screened after completing the routine. This was only retrievable with an hard reset. Wary HardInfo detects on-board nV15, GF2 GTS/Pro chipset. Think there's been nV issues already!
Yes, there is something badly amiss with the initial video setup. First priority is to get a picture on any HW thrown at an OS. Twiddling with drivers/resolution/w.h.y. has to come later? There must be a way of doing this without prejudicing final setup and without using boot codes?
Later:
- using the full complement of pfix=ram,vesa nomodeset gave me a picture but xorgwizard still isn't functioning to enable a change of resolution.
PS: the 'pupX' came too late to change the mouse settings. Had to change the mouse to get access to the ability to change the settings! All this has to come first!
And finally?!: managed to get 1024x768 (icons askew) by using the menu version of Xorg Video Wizard - it didn't work from the CLI after CTRL-ALT-BKSPCE. No email client (in main menu)?
Package Manager is empty? and this is the first Puppy that won't accept Opera(other Deb)??? Looks like you guys will have to postpone that world cruise for a couple of years!

Sage,
The email client is "Thunderbird" - it's on the desktop next to the Firefox icon. As for the PPM - yeah it's blank, you need to "configure" it first to download the latest package list. The graphics is the difficult one, I don't have any answer.
For others:
- I've just uploaded the latest skype.sfs and jre 1.6.
-An as announced earlier, there is openshot.sfs version 1.3 which includes blender too.

Thanks, jb. I expected to find the email client in the menu as well as desktop. I don't use Thunderbird, anyway - Claws or EudoraOSE!
Yes, the video is a major bugaboo, but so could be the mouse one if there isn't a boxload of spares knocking around...

I suspect it might be the drivers.. .however I have never seen this in any puppy, and not with the RC
Computer - Intel E8400 Duo 3GH. Nvidia GeForce 9400GT card.
Boot halts with tiny print on the screen. I suspect, wizard has adjusted the video. NOTHING till I hit enter then something flashes on the screen. I get a desktop...Icons seem large, yet hardware info shows 1040x.
STRANGE part is the screen flashes about every three or five seconds.

Thanks, folks, for the FD 520 final.
I hope I don't dampen your enthusiasm with bad news - X can't work in my AMD Fusion Laptop even with the kernel parameter tweaks of pfix=vesa,nox nomodeset (and any possible combination).
But FD 520 never hangs Xorg at once, only after about 2 minutes.
My emachines fusion laptop monitor must be the problematic part that makes Xorg fail in this machine (too sad, this is the much-promising AMD Fusion APU solution). (However, FD 511 has pristine Xorg setup doing direct rendering in this machine, so there lies the confusion.)
I wonder how Xorg setup can be tweaked without hanging the whole system? FD 520 and even other/newer Puppies can't get past xorgwizard's "Probing..." in this machine. Older Xorgwizard (in pup 431, for example) never hangs at that point.
EDIT: For diagnostics, am attaching the contents of /tmp and the result of lspci.

Has this been reported? PPM issues. Maybe I missed,but is documented to use a different method for system package management?
Might want to consider an update?

I am getting something similar, but only in PUPMODE=5 - a frugal install with no pupsave. I need to type "xwin" to get a desktop. I'm sure that no previous version behaved like this.
Also, sfs_load is still broken because of the change in kernel number. However, when I try to force it into SFSVER=4, the program breaks. (???)

Sorry, somehow I didn't put that in. I'll attach a pet to fix it.

Your PET does the same weird thing as my patch. It breaks the gtkdialog so the file chooser icon no longer appears. Maybe someone else can test this.

It's an old ATI Radeon Xpress 200G. But I believe that I also saw it happen on a newer machine with Intel graphics.

Maybe a glitch somewhere between then and now. Interestingly, I was able to surf the web, and access the FATDOG site for PETs. But the PPM was not cooperating as it always had.

I ran some tests on a newer machine with Intel graphics and the video worked fine.
However, the sfs_load bug continues. The gtkdialog doesn't render properly.
