Just curious, how to make portableapps? Can another distro use pet package or sfs package? Can these a first step to ....

Linux Developers Mull Unified App Store Fedora, Red Hat, Ubuntu, and other distros are working on a framework for a universal application installer.

making portable apps :)
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/portable-l ... ux-distro/

pets and sfs are unique to Puppy
I believe there was a distro that could use sfs
(with slight modifications to the sfs most should be able to)
On the whole other major distros have larger software repositories
This is why Lucid can make use of .deb files with slight modifications and
quite often major shrinking of bloat

spup makes use of slackware files
as does TXZ_pup

ttuuxxx recently revived dpup which makes use of .deb files
(but from the Debian source rather than the Ubuntu fork)

This sort of initiative that brings software
across penguin groups is worth supporting and offering feedback to . . .

In fact . . . no one has taken the base Puppy and added all the working
portapps? tsk tsk . . .
I seem to remember someone did this with Wine and
the Windows portable apps . . .

Now we haz penguin apps . . . :)

I downloaded Mplayer r31042 and made it executable as describe above. The file is on a flashdrive which is mounted. If I click on this file nothing happens. Tried to get it to run in a terminal. Get "no such file or directory" Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

Ken.

keniv,
As the applications on there have not been built with Puppy in mind some of them won't work - most of what does work on Puppy has been posted in this topic.

Hi stu90

OK I will try one of the apps posted as working in puppy. I had just assumed as it had not worked that I was doing something wrong. Quite interesting if it does work.

Thanks for your help,

Ken.

Keniv,

you might also be interested in RoxApps, which can also be run from wherever you want.

I just googled & saw that Amigo has some here.

e.g. if you download NuclearChess.tbz, then extract it somewhere, you can run it by clicking the extracted icon. Too see the internals, right click & choose "Look Inside".

Hi All

Just had time to get back to this. Downloaded wireshark (on the list as working in puppy) to my save file and made it executable. Tried to run it from here and it worked. Moved it to a flash drive and it ran from here as well although did get a warning about running it as root both times. I have not had much time to actually use wireshark to see if its working properly but so far I have had more success than with mplayer.

Muggins thanks for the links. I have had a quick look and will get back to them when I have a bit more time.

Regards,

Ken.

Hi Again

Now have wireshark, audacity and open office working from a flash drive. I really like these. Has anybody found one for wine? I tried googeling for one but could not find one. I only need windows for one thing now and that it to run a database for radio valves. I don't use it a lot so not worth the install of wine as a .pet or .sfs on a small hd. This would be an ideal way to run it.

Regards,

Ken.

Still curious, after googling. I can't find the philosophy of 'making portablelinuxapps'. I can't find it. And I can't make appimageassistant run on my lucid 520.
Is the same thing to 'folder application' like file-sharing? Any one give me explanation?

@Lobster:

the link you posted on 29 Jan 2011 (how to make portable apps)
now yields "not found".

[edit:] the portablelinuxapps site has a pdf available (under the
Information link on the first page) that describes the workings
of a portable app, and probably how to make them (I haven't
read all of it yet).
