Tried that driver under 431, no joy.
HardInfo sees the device but when I manually load the module in Network Wizard (old or new) it fails to see the device.

doc, apparently there are different versions
r3 is not supported, apparently
Its for a Belkin N FSD8053 r3 for
which there are no Linux drivers. ndiswrapper works perfectly but only when 4K stack sizes are disabled

Well the Belkin FSD8053 appears to be a very recent device, and Google doesn't return many hits about its chipset.
To be more definite about the appropriate driver, we need to know the exact device ID.
edoc, please plug in the wifi device, then run this command -
and look for the wifi device. Please report its "Vendor" and "ProdID" values.

Does Radio Shack sell a 431-compatible USB nic?

Does Radio Shack - in the USA - sell a 431-compatible USB or PCMCIA b/g/n nic?
I am thinking of bringing a 431 laptop in and asking them to test nics until they have one they can sell me that really works.
Driving 2 hours round-trip to the city only to discover that the Best Buy Belkin nic isn't compatible is a waste of time and money.
Buying them over the Internet has not worked either since manufacturers switch chipsets without warning all the time.

If the guys at Radioshack will let you try various PCMCIA/USB wifi modules till you get a linux friendly one,....
then persuade them to ADVERTISE IT at the desk!!
I'm sure they'd sell hundreds more!
You could even be cheeky, & ask for commission as their tester

Yes, it does seem to be my "curse" to get unsupported or just-being-supported hardware!
Hopefully that means it will not be obsolete too soon.
It does not work under 4.21 but
does work under 4.31

That should be self-evident. The r8192s_usb driver was compiled for the 2.6.30.5 kernel in Puppy 4.3,
it's attached to the forum thread titled "Extras for Puppy 4.3 with 2.6.30.5 kernel"
and the attachment contains this field: "Description for Puppy 4.3"

Being a Linux noobie it was a struggle to get it working, Google was my best ally. Together we found this nugget on the Ndiswrapper at SourceForge:

With ndiswrapper version 1.7 (and later), ......, install both neta5agu and athfmwdl drivers. With that, ndiswrapper will load the firmware when necessary. " which was puzzling because the only version the Ndiswrapper Project was offering for download was v1.55 - the same version 431 includes. And Network Wizard only allows 1 driver per module!!
More searching and we found
this, which I concluded was basically what NW was doing under the covers.
Long story short - first I manually installed the firmware driver in Ndiswrapper - athfmwdl, and then I faked-out NW by lying about it in the Ndiswrapper dialogs and letting NW install netA5AGU.
The wizard then did his magic and wlan0 appeared and all was simple clickery from there on - almost.
Network apps failed to connect. Checking with ifconfig - it showed a weird IP-address. It seems NW had naively trusted DHCP in their negotiations.
I confirmed that my D-Link DI-624 router had the latest firmware and as a last resort shutdown all nodes on my home network including the router and cable-modem and rebooted them. When I asked NW to negotiate with DHCP for a new IP address he obliged and all is working.

Picked up on first boot

as there was an onboard ethernet two Blinkys opend in the sysy tray
used connection wizard to configure the cardand and it
Picked up 3 network connections on first scan
2 of 3 had no encryption and worked first time, but my BThomehub2 would not connect when WEP was specified as advised on BT site. I eventually specified WAP2 saved the profile and low and behold connected first and every subsequent time
So, I seriously need some help.

I (because of lack of money) own a Fujitsu Lifebook (circa 1992 I believe) and I got sick of windows on it, so decided to put Puppy 4.31 on. Well, first off, I can't get the damn thing to install, secondly, I can't configure my wireless usb adapter. The install might just not ever work (although it says the files are in fact installed, when I try to boot it says Operating System Not Found) but I should be able to run my wireless on a cd boot, right?
My adapter is an Actiontec USB. It's model number is 802AIn, here's the link to the page:

I'm sorry I'm not much more help. but I'm really a linux noob when it comes to anything but Ubuntu, or Mint. Any Ideas? I got this guide, but it didn't help:

The system itself has around 64mb of ram, and a 4gb hard drive. No wifi, , no USB2.0, not even an ethernet port, had to purchase a LAN card. (Sad and old, I know. It also doesn't have a battery!)

Success seems to be kernel rather than version dependent.
Edit: Feb 2, 2010 -- or maybe just a problem in eMachines. See below:
I have a
D-Link WNA 1330 PCMCIA wireless adapter and --per Fios installed wireless router-- must use WEP encryption. The adapter works with "original" Version 2 Puppies using ndiswrapper; Version 3 Puppies, and using the "stock" Atheros drivers under the Version 4.0 thru 4.12 Puppies. I don't recall a problem with Puppies based on Version 4.2.
And it works with "retro" versions of 4.3 puppies using the 2.6.21.7 kernel.
However, as of 1/16/2010,
with one exception, it has not worked with any Puppies using the 2.6.30.5 kernel: not with the stock Atheros driver, tempestuous' Madwifi-hal extra, nor attempting to use ndiswrapper. The adapter will see the network, allow me to set parameters using either Network Wizard or pwireless2, but does not connect to the network.
Under 431JP (Japanese Edition) based on K2.6.30.5, it is able to connect BUT only by using ndiswrapper with the XP driver.
Note: The Japanese Edition is bilingual Japanese-English, and there is now an sfs providing support for other languages. Both ISO & sfs are available via the below link:

This card worked first time with a Toshiba Satellite 1410 laptop.
Note the Cardbus interface is the 32-bit version of PCMCIA, so will not work with (really old) 16-bit PCMCIA slots.

D-Link DWA-125 WiFi USB adapter
According to a number of sources, is built Ralink 2870 chip, but on linux refuses to work with such driver (even with ndiswrapper using valid WinXP driver). However, works great with Patriot's Ralink 3070 modified driver (

To Jana and ALL the folks that have the USB WIFI blues here is something
you may wish to try.I bought an inexpensive D-Link DWA-130 802.11 N
and tried to get it to work in Puppy 431 K 2.6.30.5 and using the WinXP driver on the CD the best I could get out of Ndiswrapper was "invalid driver" and don't come back
So doing what I generally do when I'm in over my head I took the rtl8192u.sys file(in the same CD folder) and renamed it rtl8192u.inf and
Ndiswrapper took it like it was good.I then took the net8192u.inf and loaded if with Ndiswrapper and it took that also but complained about
rtl8192u.inf .When I saw the DWA-130 flashing,I knew I was into something.The only problem I had was on scanning as it came up with some of the strangest I.P s so knowing the I.P. address statically I had used on another dongle I entered that I.P.staticly and I am now using it on this post.I am sure there are folks on this forum who are already aware of this but I thought I'd give a shout out.Good Luck
