Wow
pencil is a very nice animation tool. very simple and has everything what I need for simple animation instead flash.
There is only one problem in my pencil. everytime i try to save new animation as .swf the program is crashing. and I am losing everything
Has any one the same problem? and an idea how to fix it?

well we all had that problem, and wasn't able to fix it, I haven't looked at it lately, but I'll try to compile it again when a newer less buggy release is released

Dear Puppians,
I compiled the new pencil - 0.4.4.b - on Puppy 3.01 with qt 4.4.1 without problems. Unlike my earlier version, this one started mangling the swf output, doing something wrong in the rendering of bitmaps. I had wanted to install the new version because the former one would not produce sound on my system. After noticing the newly mangled swfs, I installed the latest ming package (libs and executables) from the Slackware 12.0 repo. Still no luck. I think there are bugs in the latest pencil, as ttuuxxx has suggested. We will probably have to wait a bit until they fix them. Apart from that, pencil is indeed a nice program.
With kind regards,
vovchik

I'm with everyone, Pencil's awesome, thanks for the pet Ttuuxxx, but I can't seem to use the export movie function. Using it on Quirky. It's no big deal, just thought I'd mention it after playing with it a bit. Fun program!

Dear Puppians,
I seem to recall that I figured out why the new version crashed. Everything was fine when libming was 0.3:
Code: Select all
/usr/lib/libming.so -> libming.so.0
/usr/lib/libming.so.0 -> libming.so.0.3.0
Things get dicey in pencil with libming.so.1.4.x. When I restored those old libming links, pencil was able to export.
With kind regards,
vovchik

Lobster
You should find it under Graphics > Graphics Processing.
Hope that helps.
Paul
btw - I'll check dependencies on a clean Lupu LIVE-CD...

naaa lobster QT is never inclusive in a 1.6MB pet
Barry usually splits up the QT packages, some in the devx and some in another pet package.
The missing files you need you can get from Ubuntu, there are 4 of them

This one has....
http://www.4shared.com/file/T1kgosyE/Pe ... Lucid.html
7.4Mb tho!
Or just use the QT4 deb's from ttuuxxx with this one.

BTW - all the Pencil's uploaded are v0.4.4b - the latest.

I realize this is an "old" thread, however with this pet Pencil shuts down abruptly when saving as a flashfile. (Lupo 5.1.0) is there any cure for this?
Would this be the better choice?

is working OK in Luci 213 (Puppy 5.2 development release)
Many thanks

I found I could get Pencil to work in puppy3 and puppy 4.31 (Lighthouse)
with the pencil download in first post and
ttuuxxx's version of qt
https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q= ... 0276,d.eW0
It saved illustration as jpeg file only.

Ok tried this out...the swf crash was due to the buggy libming included.(well it complained I had the wrong png version )
I downloaded a similar version from debian lenny and exported no problem.
This should be fine on older puppies otherwise...looks fun...the kids will test it out.

How does Pencil compare to other packages, such as:
"Easypaint: a QT MS paint replacement"
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=79899
BTW, I found that just a couple packages from Debian can make the old Xfig program run (in the past, I used that to change my simple experimental data into "publication quality" -- graph, annotate, etc.).

Well its an animation program aimed at producing swf cartoons.
Can also make .movs it seems though would not for me (more dependancies.) but the flash export was fine.
