thanks Tallboy checking into this usually I manually frugally install my iso's - I'll use unetbootin and check this out.

Hi guys,

I have rebuilt the iso and posted ammended link in the first post.

I used Scottman's woofy 0.91 and tested by booting a fresh boot with no savefile in unetbootin which successfully booted and tested programs and all seems well this time. Unfortunately I don't have the ability to test and burn a live cd..

I will also create a folder at the archive.org site so that if you want to do a 4.31 upgrade with glibc 2.19 yourself you can.

My apologies to all who did live-cd's that didn't work - I am very sorry this happened. I have removed the previous iso's.

Right I have uploaded all the files needed for a glibc2.19 upgrade of 4,31.

Browsers are accessed from jwm menu.



Instructions for doing your own upgrade:

1. Most important for the upgrade to work there is a text file called profile this should be copied to /etc this will replace /etc/profile it contains the following line..

export LC_ALL=C

2. All the lib files should be copied to /usr/lib - especially if you are wanting to run the updated psip which requires libcrypto.so 1 and libssl.so.1

Libreadline is important for a correctly working frisbee as well upgrade dhcp and wpasupplicant. Dbus and Dbus-glib are important for working browsers.

I don't like remastering. Make a savefile with your customizations and make an iso file including that savefile into the iso with mkisofs. Boot the iso with option "puppy pfix=ram". Copy the savefile on the hd from the iso and make your frugal install and you are done. You can easily fit the savefile for your hardware.
Another way is to extract the content of the main sfs, copy manually the possibly few new packages into it and rebuild it. At last rebuild the iso with mkisofs.

Edit: recent puppies have built-in isomaster.

is it possible to get html 5 working. palemoon 27.9.4 and seamonkey 2.46 can run
html 5. it's not working so has to be something missing in the 4.31 system.

MMmm Yes Palemoon isn't doning Html at youtube so using the seamonkey 2.46 from menu-internet Seamonkey2.46 is the one to use to make it default edit the Browse Icon and have the following entry
To do this right click on desktop browse Icon and left click on Browse - open as text, make changes as above and save them.

P.s. There is a left over old Seamonkey that should have been deleted by Seamonkey so it is imortant to use the later 2.46 Seamonkey from menu/internet Seamonkey 2.46.

When next version of 4.31 Phoenix is done I'll delete it. Its in /opt/seamonkey/seamonkey.

Now, then; what's the current state of play with this? I fancy giving this a try on ye anciente Dell, see if I can speed things up a tad.

I've currently got Raring and Precise running on here, installed to the SSD. Precise is a bit sprightlier than Raring, which itself ain't too bad speed-wise.

I've got a bit confused, reading the previous posts, as to how you try this out. Do I understand correctly, that you have to install this first, before trying it out.....like, say, a frugal straight to USB? No 'Live-CD', is that right?

I'll probably do a quick'n'dirty, anyway.

Is MikeB's 431 stuff still available......and, more importantly, does it run with this any longer, having upgraded the glibc? Or can we actually run more up to date stuff now? (Ooh, please say 'Yes'..! )

I'm wondering, y'see; it's entirely possible the portable packages I assembled for Smokey's BackSeatDriver may work, too; it uses 1.4.2. Perhaps not the AppImages, but I think definitely the self-extracting scripts ought to... Worth a try, anyhow, I reckon.

I'll take a crack at this, let ya know what happens.

Yes Psip was updated as I included necessary openssl libs. Watchdog told me old one wasn't working anymore that came with original 4.31 also updated deadbeef to 0.7.2.

I have noticed Palemoon 27.9.4SSE was no longer doing HTML5 would love this to be solved. As stated seamonkey 2.46 from the menu does play HTML5. from youtube.

I might add I have been unable even with the updates been able to get PM 28 working.

About youtube. You can download the video with an extension (easy youtube video downloader express) and play it with xine. Google does not support anymore old softwares.

I have a plm-28.6.1-p4.sfs which use a chroot jail from precise which works to play streams and youtube. If someone is interested I can share it. It's 200 Mb large.
I'm using the very first release of this derivative with my customizations: I have problems with further releases. With the last release I have a Kernel Panic when I boot with a pupsave loading. I think too many changes to the original puppy 4.31.

ok ii will try newer seamonkey 2.46

I managed to create a working pupsave with my customizations using the current release. It's funny to play with this puppy. Thanks darry.

Per your 'chrooted' Palemoon as mentioned above, I'd be very interested to try it out in this 431 're-visited'..! I just prefer Palemoon; I'm not a fan of SeaMonkey, I'm afraid!

Just FYI, a few things I've found work OK in your upgraded 431.

Jake (SFR)'s Lockstate and MagDock both work flawlessly.

Barry's EasyDD utility which I packaged up does as well, but 'pup-dialog' is required.....and possibly 'pupmessage', too..? Not certain about this second one.

And the tiny VideoView webcam app (which watchdog put me onto 2-3 yrs ago) also works. Interesting, this one, because my Logitech c920 HD Pro wasn't built till 3 or 4 years after this was released.....but because it's UVC-compliant, that's why it runs without issue, because VideoView supports the UVC kernel driver module. And that's been in the kernel for a long time.

And finally, a question of my own. Can somebody please explain to me how you use Xine to watch videos....'cos I've never been able to figure it out!

I can get 'em to start, but nothing ever shows on the screen.....

EDIT:- Correction; it plays DVDs from the optical drive fine. However, I can't figure out how to get it to play back videos from the hard drive?

Help would be appreciated.
