Hi WRCU2,
Have you tried to run Firefox to see if it works?

Firefox you posted above. However, there is a boatload of missing library *.so's that the package manager hasn't got a clue about.
firefox is compiled to "include" gnome( mostly for distros that have gnome pre installed ) as a possible window manager
while slackware uses KDE

if you fill all those gnome dependencies and do not install gnome
thats a big waste of time and space which does not improve the basic function

thats is no cause for alarm
if it is working for you correctly
no problem so in this case you can ignore
any gnome libs needed

so as long as firefox is stable and flash works
celebrate the newer version until the next update comes along :lol:

thanks for posting
if you run into any snags let me know

I have tried Slaxer_Pup on many machines to date and all has worked well.
On the newer motherboards that I have it is not necessary to turn off the ACPI to get them to boot which is a big plus.
I am trying to get Virtual Box running and have downloaded the kernel-source-2.6.27.7-smp-1.lzm and rename it to kernel-source-2.6.27.7-smp-1_412.sfs.
Got Virtual Box installed OK but the driver won't compile.
I will upload sources I want to add in some support still
so I have been and still am busy with that

the good news is I would like to help you get VM running

I will up load the sources with a new initrd with the next iso
so I hope you don't mind to wait a bit

thanks for tying slaxer pup and posting

all the posts I receive help make slaxer pup better for more people

I am working on it

I was wondering if I'm supposed to run Firefox from a console because there is no menu entry. Also I tried to install REALPLAYER 11 from http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/big_bass/ which was no problem but the menu entry appeared to be not executable. I uninstalled and went with RP10.

I'm curious, what is the likelihood of getting a fully enabled iptables netfilter package and kernel? I noticed quite a few of my favorite modules are not present, especially ipt_recent.

So far I'm liking the Slaxer_Pup but I'm a little apprehensive about installing additional packages without a reliable means to resolve dependencies.

I should have been more specific, sorry about that. I installed the Firefox you posted previously and there is no menu entry or desktop icon at all. There is however an executable link:

/usr/bin/firefox -> /usr/lib/firefox-3.0.9/firefox which is why I asked if it needs to be run from a terminal. I used Gexec to fire up Firefox and it works fine but I don't relish doing this every time.

What is the best way to create a menu entry or shortcut with slaxer_pup?

Also, what can I do to get a more complete set of Netfilters?

Thanks for all the help Joe.

Yesterday, at 23:31 I posted the solution
just install those packages click on the blue firefox link and the blue realplayer link

now for the Netfilters
netfilters-click-here

after you install add block you will be asked what other filters you want

let me how it went

Installing Apache on Slaxer_Pup

#148 Post by WRCU2 »

Thanks again Joe. I'm sticking with Realplayer 10 for now and I'll be okay with starting Firefox the old-fashioned way when I need it, since I already set-up Firefox with the extensions I like. Besides, Seamonkey is much quicker for simpler tasks like this.

When I spoke of Netfilters, I was referring to:

/lib/modules/2.6.27.7/kernel/net/netfilter
/usr/lib/iptables

When my puppy grows up, I'd like to DNAT some pesky bots to it from my normal webserver and I'll need to have some rudely configured netfilter rules in place to keep them busy as they snoop around.

Right now I would like to learn more about using src2pkg. I need to install a webserver and I'm most comfortable with Apache. From where do you recommend I go and grab that source?

this is a sfs from forum member "growler" he
can give you some tips with the package

hosted on raffy's site
http://minipc.org/lamp/

I have my own way to make desktop icons
that allows them to work for any window manager 8)
paste this code in geany or leafpad

then save it as firefox
*don't use the .desktop extention tagged to the end*
when used for a launch icon on your visual desktop

you now will have the icon
since the icons are already with the package I uploaded
it will look nice

you can drag it or copy it wherever you want

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Exec=firefox
Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/firefox.png
Type=Application
Categories=X-Internet
Name=Firefox web browser
MimeType=text/html
X-KDE-StartupNotify=true

Why not use the installed Hiawatha?

#150 Post by WRCU2 »

Hey Joe I thought to try Hiawatha since it is already a part of Puppy Linux and configured pretty good. There is just one issue I have regarding Puppy's Personal Blog and that is these errors in the error.log:

Wed 17 Jun 2009 16:59:22 +0800|127.0.0.1|/root/httpd/hiawatha/blog/smilies/cool.gif|access denied via filesystem
Wed 17 Jun 2009 16:59:22 +0800|127.0.0.1|/root/httpd/hiawatha/blog/smilies/cry.png|access denied via filesystem
Wed 17 Jun 2009 16:59:22 +0800|127.0.0.1|/root/httpd/hiawatha/blog/smilies/doh.gif|access denied via filesystem
Wed 17 Jun 2009 16:59:22 +0800|127.0.0.1|/root/httpd/hiawatha/blog/smilies/happy.gif|access denied via filesystem
Wed 17 Jun 2009 16:59:22 +0800|127.0.0.1|/root/httpd/hiawatha/blog/smilies/n_n.png|access denied via filesystem
Wed 17 Jun 2009 16:59:22 +0800|127.0.0.1|/root/httpd/hiawatha/blog/smilies/worried.gif|access denied via filesystem

I did a chmod 774 for the smilies directory but this had no affect. What is the problem that these images are denied by the filesystem? All other images are displayed with no problem. Thanks :wink:

well, you wont be able to smile :D

but if thats the only problem lets take a swing at it
/root/httpd/hiawatha/blog/pup_pplog.pl
is the script that I will reference with line numbers below

==========code snippet============

#30 our $config_smiliesFolder = '/root/httpd/hiawatha/blog/smilies'; # Path to smilies, if you dont want smilies, just, dont upload that folder

#32 our $config_postsDatabaseFolder = '/root/httpd/hiawatha/blog/posts'; # Name of the folder where entries will be saved. If you cant create entries with this path, try /home/www/user/posts

#1573 print 'The admin owner did not allow smilies for this blog.';

============end of code ===================

maybe if the other path doesnt work the smilies
"The admin owner did not allow smilies for this blog"

everything I checked seems fine with the config strings

Thanks for that helpful info, I'll try a different directory tomorrow. But now I've got other issues with firefox:

#tail /var/log/messages

Jun 17 06:58:27 (none) user.info kernel: firefox-bin[28154]: segfault at ffffffff ip b6bf9882 sp b65fe968 error 4 in libc-2.6.1.so[b6ba0000+f5000]
Jun 17 19:56:43 (none) user.info kernel: firefox-bin[27576]: segfault at ffffffff ip b6b58882 sp b65fe968 error 4 in libc-2.6.1.so[b6aff000+f5000]
Jun 17 22:49:00 (none) user.info kernel: firefox-bin[19105]: segfault at ffffffff ip b6c51882 sp b66fe968 error 4 in libc-2.6.1.so[b6bf8000+f5000]

This happens whenever I close the Listen Live window from this radio station:

http://www.900chml.com/

I listened to the Tigers Cats game tonight. Yes I like cats too. So why the segmentation fault? What can I do?

you can install the pet package with the menu entry I posted above

this only happens when firefox is launched from the command line

it crashes for me on that site too if I open firefox from the command line
but works solid and stable from the desktop I posted above
or the menu entry

Your help has been invaluable Joe, however when trying to retrieve to mozilla-firefox package you suggested installing, I get this message:

The bandwidth for the month of June 2009 has been exceeded.

My apologies to all the users.

We will be back in July 2009

Oh Well...

Sorry about puppylinux.asia but it was whacked pretty hard so I have no choice but to shut it down until July.
