'Remove item' performs as expected: as you describe, the
desktop item is treated as a shortcut.
What i meant to say was that one gets different results with
'Send to Trash'.
Ok, I was unaware of that difference in behaviour. The good news is that Pizzasgood understood what you were saying and knowing him I'm sure he will investigate and offer what he can on the subject. I agree that the behaviour is not only "counter-intuitive", it's downright dangerous! Good catch, pupshock! Sorry for being so obtuse on your first report. :oops:

Well, I don't know why it's like that (conky)..maybe because on usb we will always have a "flying" file system in ram. One question, do you have swap partition? I don't. Maybe that's why your puppyspace displays more space than your ram
No, no swap. Here is an interesting thing......... if I path the pupsave file in the config file, something like /mnt/home/pup_save.2fs (something like that anyway) Pwidgets, and of course conky show Zero Bytes, which is the default when there is an error, BUT, If I then go into Rox and click on the pup_save file as if trying to mount it, conky/pwidgets suddenly displays correctly, and continues to do so for the rest of the session.
BTW, I have just installed 4.2 to one of those micro SD cards mounted in a tiny adapter smaller than my thumbnail. Much nicer than having a typical long USB stick poking out of my laptop. Need to try to load it to an SD card next as my laptop has a built in SD slot, but not sure if it can boot from it.

aah off course, the filesystem has got to be mounted (if you want the pup_save to be the fs to be monitored)..if not, it should be the merged/union between the puppy sfs and the pup_save is the filesystem being monitored.

btw, if you are not in netbook (such as eee or things like that) won't likely you can boot from sd card...

Yet freememapplet works? Laptop, not netbook, so not expecting success.

DaveS

whodo made a new thread. Official 4.2 patches and updates. Go there to pick and download what you want. I made up a jwmtrayfix there which consists of previous original jwm blinky and freememapplet plus proper jwmrc-tray file, should work fine.

Thx for your answer.

Running livecd.

I wonder whether it is possible to "Live boot" an sfs. That is to say, wihtout a reboot.

One click on the sfs: msg "succesfully mounted" and then -what ?- to run the application (i..c. vbox).

And -if- you have to reboot, do you have to "save to cd" etc.?

In short "I would like to run Vbox (in the first place) within livecd".

- usually at that point I make a folder and name it whatever the sfs is called let say k3b.sfs so the folder I'll make is called k3b

- then I hight all the contents of the sfs and drag it into the k3b folder

-then I click the up arrow to leave that directory and now I see the k3b folder
- then right click on the white space near it and select window/terminal here and type in the terminal dir2pet k3b

follow the directions and make a pet,

I can now install the pet and when I'm done I can remove it with the package manager.
also you might have to refresh the menus to see the k3b listed in the menu. On older puppy's you would have to type in the terminal fixmenus
Then restart JWM

network wizard

#150 Post by gulk »

Hi Whodo,
first of all, I have to applaud the achievement that 4.2 is. Congratulations to the whole team, requiring huge amount of talent, effort and arguments :wink:

I was discussing the RTL8187 (wifi chipset) problem with Dougal in http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... &start=555 thread.
Dougal suggested I post it here.

Basically, there are some changes in the network wizard that are not part of 4.2 for some reasons (here, the use of 'wext' for newer wifi drivers).
This is kind of important, because many will use by default the newer drivers and DeepThought won't connect if WPA or WPA2 is used as an encryption method.

~Gulk~

PS: for your convenience, I put the fix here, but there might be other changes in the network wizard that are not part of 4.2 that I am not aware of:
in /usr/sbin/wag_profile.sh

Code: Select all

...
 r8180|r8187rtl8180|rtl8187|) CARD_WPA_DRV="ipw" ;;
...
rt61pci|rt73usb|rt2400pci|rt2500*|rt28[67]0*) CARD_WPA_DRV="wext" ;;
should be

Code: Select all

...
 r8180|r8187) CARD_WPA_DRV="ipw" ;;
...
rt61pci|rt73usb|rt2400pci|rtl8180|rtl8187|rt2500*|rt28[67]0*) CARD_WPA_DRV="wext" ;;

This effectively solves the RTL8187 not connecting if WPA is used as an encryption method.

CUPS still doesn't work in 4.2 final

#152 Post by don »

CUPS has worked fine for me in all versions through 4.12, but in all 4.2 alphas, betas and finals (regular and retro) CUPS appears to install, but won't print a test page.

I get a message, "/usr/cups/filter/foomatic-rip-hpllp failed".

My computer is a Gateway, 2GB RAM.

Anything I should be doing?

Go to the folder /usr/lib/cups/filter
Locate the file foomatic-rip-hplip and open it in a text editor
Change the top line to #!/usr/bin/perl -U
Save it and run CUPS again.

This fix is courtesy of Patriot in the CUPS 1.39 thread.

We don't have "stupid newbie" questions here, we have "Beginners Help" questions. :D See this thread entitled "How to upgrade from Puppy 4.1.2 to 4.2":

WOW! I just kept saying WOW! as I opened 4.2-Final on my old Panasonic CF-28 laptop.

FAST!

Loaded my Gigafast USB wireless nic plugged into my PCMCIA-to-USB adpter and connected to the internet quickly and smoothly.

Seamonkey is also fast and smooth.

AWESOME!

Now to the part that will make me nervous ... CUPS and Internet streaming video sites ... will report back later.

BTW: Is there a site/thread with a checklist of the differences between 4.2-Final and what WOOF/dPup will offer? I am really confused about that.

http://www.livenewscameras.com can be a good test -- no audio and gxine fails in the popup for the mms server.

The BBC World ffmpeg popup does work.

The Live News Map via www.google.com :( takes a while but does load OK. Clicking on the Savannah icon brings up a couple of popups then a note that the stream is not active ... tried Sacramento and got an "xine engine failed to start" error ... Phoenix comes up with the gxine window but no content.

Backing out of http://www.webcamplaza.net crashes Seamonkey.

Sorry for bad news ... still love the look and speed of 4.2-Final!

Abiword, same problem as in 4.12, opens a RTF file with no content. OO handles the same file fine in 4.12

The file I was accessing is:
http://bibleseven.com/whcc/articles.html the file is The Gospels Section 4 - Outline

In 4.12 I was exchanging files with someone who was using an older WP under a MS version of windows - Abiword kept messing up the formatting so I switched to OO and problem solved.

Will there be an OO PET for 4.2?

Can OO completely replace Abiword as the default so that space is not wasted and I only have to deal with the single word processor app?
