Please look in the BIOS-setup, if the virus-protection is disabled.
Some BIOSes activate such a protection, so that bootsector-virii cannot destroy the bootsector.
This also prevents, that operating systems can install a bootloader.

hm yes, I think I removed it, when I added the new panel.
I must search it, to add it again.
It was the IceWM configuration manager from ezpup.
I already started writing my own utility, that should cover more settings, but then i was interrupted by server-related stuff for our customers.
I hope, that in 2 weeks the migration is finished, so that I can concentrate again on the desktop-functionality of Muppy.
This week, I wrote some code required to switch windowmanagers/panels, but am not sure yet, if I can finish it on sunday, before I drive back to northern germany, to install servers.

008.3e feedback
Hi Mark,
I have moved to 008.3e-standard and congratulations on the many, many apps in 008.3e standard - you seem to have done away with the zmsy_083.sfs file.
I thank you for fixing the issue I mentioned:
Thanks again for all your work.
I also wrote:When I click on the task bar paw mark and make a selection from the menu - it works. Close that application or window.
Click again on the paw mark and the last selection automatically is restarted!
This is still the case, and there are several other selection boxes that respond only to a mouse click. One other small thing - when rebooting or powering off the confirmation box "OK" button only responds to a mouse click.
Enter or tab + enter should work but doesn't.
Thanks again for all your work.
Hi Mark,
Is there anything in Muppy 008.3e standard for scanning?
I couldn't find anything. I have an Epson Stylus CX4800 scanner/printer that I have got working successfully on other puppies.
I tried both of ttuuxxx's packages:
Any suggestions?
Thanks, B.

I tried both of ttuuxxx's packages:
I can launch the xaneshell dialog and I get to where it asks do I have a parallel or USB connection. It then quits - nothing happens. One package has iscan( iscan
Image Scan--Proprietary Software for Epson Scanners) and the other doesn't.
libgphoto 2.2.4.1
sane 1.0.19
sane backend 1.0.19.10
xsane 0.994
iscan 2.10
iscan included
http://www.puppylinux.ca/ttuuxxx/progra ... -iscan.pet
No iscan

Any suggestions?

Can you run icewinconfigure from the comandline?accessdenied wrote:Hi MU,
I don't have/see that menu entry under 'desktop' even after 2 installs.
I did notice the .pet install mention something in the line of 'there is no menu entry for this' afterwards.

I never tried scanning, and have no experience with this, I'm sorryBarburo wrote:Hi Mark,

to give you more choice concerning desktops/panels, I rewrote muppywmchooser:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 914#209914
It now is far more complex than the old simple choice among jwm/icewm.
This is a first testrelease, so please tell me in that thread, how it works for you.

Nvidia users attention:
I could test the installer for the propriatary Nvidiadriver included in Muppy.
Using a Nvidia 6800 onboard-graficscard.
The installer had a bug and did not work correct, the attached patch fixes this, and will be added in 0083f.
Mark
README:
If you want to install the propriatary Nvidia-driver, and it fails:
Exit X if it already runs, and type at the black screen:
xorgwizard
Choose Xorg, and the desired resolution.
If X then gives you just a black screen, hit CTRL-ALT-Backspace to go back to textmode.
type again:
xorgwizard
Now choose Xvesa.
Now X should start.
Install Nvidiapatch-Muppy0083e.pet
Restart X, and when you are offered in the green dialog to install the Nvidia-driver, confirm this.

Muppy and Dual Core Processors
I am very impressed with Muppy, in my opinion it is the most developed of the main puplets and adds a great deal of flexibility by having multiple versions and extentions etc.
The only question I have is about dual core processors - it runs fine but a lot slower than with a dual core kernel as used in the alternative Puppy Dingo using the newer kernel.
Is there any straight-forward way of adding a module to the kernel etc?

008.3 MINI doesn't detect hard drives / partitions
I downloaded 008.3 MINI and addons.sfs intending to create a save file on the hard drive and subsequently use the .sfs as explained: http://minisys-linux.de/EN/f2.html#useaddons
PROBLEM:
The CD boots into GUI OK, but seems not to detect hard drive partitions. MUTT shows hard drive names, but no partitions. HotPlug desktop icons (set to all) shows floppy disk drive, and there is one other icon labeled CDROM which refers to the CD-Writer holding the Muppy system disk.
Gparted finds no drives to work with. Neither PMount, Xproc-System information, etc.
When I shutdown and ask to save file, the response is "no suitable partitions available".
SYSTEM:
PIII / 746 MHz Processor / 384 Mb RAM
Floppy / CDROM / CDRW / 2 hard drives partitioned like this:
. . . hde1 - vfat
. . . hde2 - vfat
. . . linux SWAP
. . . hdf1 - ext3
. . . hdf3 - ext2
. . . hdf4 - vfat
. . . hdf2 { extended }
. . . . . . . . . hdf5 - vfat
. . . . . . . . . hdf6 - vfat
I have searched the forum, and Googled, without success. Can you advise what might be my next steps to solve this?
I'm a first time forum poster, currently Multi booting alongside windows, training myself to see if I can make a full transition to Linux, so appreciate very much Puppy community's outlook to make this easier for people like me. Thanks to developers and supporters for their work, dedication, friendliness, and sense of humour.

Sense of humour ends now.
I use Muppy Standard quite often.
Just out of interest...2 drives.
Do they show up in the Bios.
Open the case and take the power cable off one,
boot up Muppy and see what happens.
See if one drive appears.
If not try this.
They are probably IDE drives.
Pull each drive out and make each one a master so they show up
in the bios as Master and Secondary Master.
And make sure your CD Rom is set as slave.
You could of course make hard drive Master and
the other one set as Slave, but that should be unecessary.
Because quite possibly they are set as cable select.
If is not immediatly apparent what pin to use....before
fiddling around.....mark where the original pins are...
with Fine Marker etc...so you can put Humpty back together easily.
Better answers than mine will no doubt voice their opinion.

Thanks Chris, welcome your input.cthisbear wrote:...2 drives. Do they show up in the Bios.

BIOS shows drives. Yes, both IDE
Both Windows and 2 Linux hard drive installs are recognizing the partitions properly, as well as all live CDs I have used up until now.
Cables and Master Slave relationships seem ship shape.
Somehow I see you as still smiling mate.cthisbear wrote:Sense of humour ends now

I think a new kernel would be needed, with all consequences (recompilation of all Kernelmodules).
I currently hesitate in doing this, as Muppys Kernel has proven to be very reliable.
Muppy IS slower than Dingo, simply because it is much larger.
On a AMD 3800 (2x1900Mhz) Dualcore-CPU using only one core, Muppy flies.
OpenOffice writer starts in 3 seconds.
As most dual core processors have high frequencies, it should fly on most of them.
If Muppy runs slow on such a computer, there must be something else wrong I think.
I that case, we would need more info about the hardware and setup, to get an idea, where things could be optimized.
