Short answer ... No, there is no SMP support in Puppy 4.2 DeepThought. Since this is the first official release without Barry at the helm, it was thought best to stick with the standard kernel options and just build a user-friendly, relatively bug-free release for the first attempt. Honestly, I've got my hands full juggling package updates, bug fixes and usability requests without adding SMP into the mix. Sorry, panzerpuppy. Maybe another time, eh?panzerpuppy wrote:Is the new Puppy 4.2 configured with SMP / multicore support?
The latest official release (4.1.2) with the 2.6.25.6 kernel was still configured the old way (without SMP).Is this one any different? Are we going to have SMP support for the first time with this release?

Really SMP does add a lot to the size of the kernel, If I recall it was 5+MB, I really don't think it would be in any of the main releases, I could be wrong, but it might be better for the spinoff versions you were talking about earlier WhoDO.WhoDo wrote:Short answer ... Since its a extremely small minority being effect and the loss of programs over the added weight would be over the top. Just like Gnumeric another application that should be repo only, I have never needed that application, only in school did I need something like that, and that was covered in class. When you think of the size of it and its dependencies it silly, but the original thinking was to have puppy come equip with the same sort of suite as OpenOffice. I think sage office has a tiny version in it also, like 1/4 of the size. But you always get one or 2 outspoken Gnumeric fans. Oh well what can you do.

I don't know how Barry does it, but here's a tiny Tcl script I wrote to do the job. I just ran "recurlist.tcl" on each directory in the Puppy Unleashed 4.1.1 expanded tarballs that I wanted a list for, before I had 0pkgs_db for 4.1.1. (I'm including it inline because I got a message saying the extension ".tcl" wasn't allowed on an attachment!) So, if you want it, just copy it into a file and make the file executable. You can put an arbitrarily long line of directories after "recurlist.tcl" at the command line, or run it on each with "foreach." You'll get the file list in standard output and also in a file with the right name. (Change /root/.packages to whatever directory you want the file lists to go into.)WhoDo wrote:As for 0pkgs_db-420, it won't exist until I create it. I won't create it until the package list is finalised (each package, even updates, introduces new files for the .files in the packages directory). Even when the package list is finalised, I won't create it until I find out how Barry does that quickly and easily.
Code: Select all
#!/usr/bin/env tclsh
# recurlist.tcl: Script for recursively producing and saving a list of files
# (excluding subdirectory names) from a directory
proc recurlist {dir} {
global filestring origidir
set dirlist [glob -nocomplain -directory $dir *]
set hiddens [glob -nocomplain -types hidden -directory $dir *]
foreach fil $dirlist {
if {[file type $fil] eq "directory"} {
recurlist $fil
} else {
append filestring "[regsub $origidir $fil ""]\n"
}
}
foreach fil $hiddens {
set filtil [file tail $fil]
switch $filtil {
".." -
"." {continue}
default {
if {[file type $fil] eq "directory"} {
recurlist $fil
} else {
append filestring "[regsub $origidir $fil ""]\n"
}
}
}
}
}
# EDIT: use /root/.packages/unleashed!
# if {[file isdirectory /root/.remasterslim] == 0} {
# file mkdir /root/.remasterslim
# }
set packdir /root/.packages/unleashed
if {[info exists argv]} {
foreach arg $argv {
set filestring ""
set origidir [string trimright $arg "/"]
recurlist $origidir
puts $filestring
set origitail "[file tail $origidir]"
set filid [open [file join $packdir $origitail.files] w]
puts -nonewline $filid $filestring
close $filid
puts "The preceding list of files has been saved as\
$origitail.files in directory $packdir\n"
}
}
Thanks! It seems it will be a bit difficult to get Remaster Express included in Puppy 4.2, then--which will be unfortunate in the opinions of at least a few people (see here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=38707). Well, at least I'll package up the 4.2 version, when I can, as a candidate for inclusion in Puppy 4.2 Unleashed.When I do create it, as promised earlier, you will be the first to know.
It's stupid to use inferior software for ideological reasons.

Not as difficult as it would have been before you produced that script. I think the thing to do is to keep Remaster Express as a "surprise" inclusion for the release candidate. By then I will be certain of which packages and which versions of packages will be included. Not only will there be a feature lock but also a package update lock. That should allow us/you the window of opportunity to include your program and get some sort of testing done before we release Final.pa_mcclamrock wrote:Thanks! I hope it helps--note my very recent edit (you'll want /root/.packages/unleashed as the directory for the file lists to go into, I think, but if not, substitute whatever directory you do want).WhoDo wrote:Not as difficult as it would have been before you produced that script.pa_mcclamrock wrote:[ . . . ]It seems it will be a bit difficult to get Remaster Express included in Puppy 4.2
Thanks! I'll keep an eye out and try to work up the 4.2 version really fast once I get the final package lists.I think the thing to do is to keep Remaster Express as a "surprise" inclusion for the release candidate. All I have to say to that statement 'Lightbulb goes off'WhoDo wrote:pwget is Lobster's creation. I have no idea why the call to rxvt is producing white-on-white with wget. Sorry.aragon wrote:some more bugs:

WhoDo you are the one to blame for this error and also Pawdioconverter, woooooo I can see the clock wheels spinning now, lol ok I'll stop being pricky now, (long day with the wife, )
The problem is when you changed the background on rxvt from white to black, some programs like rxvt and pawdioconverter were only using half of rxvt default settings,
pawdioconverter had a light orange default background with a black rxvt text colour, which looked great when it was developed but they never figured WhoDo whould go and change the font colour to white on light orange, hence nono #1,lol
nono#2 lobster and his creation he sets the background to almost white colour and uses rxvt's default black, and once again WhoDo colour change to white font, messed that up also.
So when you say WhoDO 'I have no idea why the call to rxvt is producing white-on-white with wget. Sorry. ' Really the lightbulb hasn't been turned on , or has it now? Lol ttuuxxx
Sorry WhoDo it was fun, I like it when ever its not just me with a blond moment.
I also fixed pwget, But I might spend a bit more time on both of them and see if I can change the font permanently.

Actually, as soon as I posted that response I thought to myself "I'll bet that's because of changing the default colours for rxvt" ... *sigh* . I'm glad you're going to look into it because I didn't want to change them back ... too nostalgic for my DOS prompt I guess!ttuuxxx wrote:So when you say WhoDO 'I have no idea why the call to rxvt is producing white-on-white with wget. Actually there were a few smp kernels, Mu did one and jcoder24 did, I think if you find Mu's version it was larger, But still isn't late in the game to start testing a kernel? The page you quoted only has a few responses on it, Maybe a double final release, one at 99mb the default release and a larger 100MB smp 'TESTING' release, that way we can say puppy is under 100MB, or have the larger smp and remove gnumeric and it would be well under 100 MB anyone who wants it could just install it via the package manager anyways.

You could of picked a background? Blue or white???zigbert wrote:Correct. I guess you've already got the updated script.WhoDo wrote: think these are links used by Zigbert's icon2desk application but I could be wrong. I believe he is changing them from hard to soft links.

I don't want to pick the wrong one and make 3 packages just to do it all again.
also what do you think of libburn, cdrkit, libisofs and replacing Pburns dependencies with them ? From what I've read they produce less errors and work better in general.
