But I know nothing. I have postponed buying new machines
for some year now due to the UEFI thing on all the new cheap ones here locally. None of our local cheap machines allow UEFI to be easily turned off AFAIK

BTW Secure boot which is what really messes up the new machines actually means "thou shalt install no other operating system than Microsoft"

I bought a new machine with Win 8 and UEFI/Secure-boot and after trying to get consistent functionality as well as speed while running legacy bios, I took the thing back to the store and got my money back. I bought another machine. It is a refurbished machine. Refurbished means that the machine is two years old, (therefore no UEFI or secure boot) but has been certified as "like new" by Hewlitt Packard and as such has a factory warranty. This machine is a dual processor machine with each processor having dual cores which makes it a quad-core machine. So far, Ubuntu 10.04 Ultimate Edition (with Ubuntu Studio apps and desktop) installed and found all the correct drivers. Precise 5.28-005 does not work, but Fatdog 64 and Precise 5.6.1 run very well!

fortunately the FatDog team are working on it from their perspective
and hopefully others too so we get as much info as possible

Pretty easy install until it decided to trash my MBR.I chainload from good old Legacy Grub to each distros bootloader in each individual partition. Instructed the installer to put the bootloader at / of sda7 (not touching the MBR or the primary Grub) went to reboot and nothing but a prompt.Slacko live cd,reinstall grub,copy the original menu.lst and back in business.

I installed Salix64 Ratpoison 14.0.1 to a Gateway desktop pc.

The Ratpoison window manager is new to me and getting used to it will
definately take some time.
It uses the gslapt package manager which works well.

EDIT:
The Gateway pc that I installed Salix64 Ratpoison on is a quad core
and I wondered how well Salix64 would run on an older pc so I
installed it on a 8 year old HP desktop.
It works great,no problems at all so far.
I am learning more about using Ratpoison wm and it's working well too.
All of the applications that come with Salix64 don't require a mouse but
I've added more with gslapt, vlc,firefox,kdegames,geany,and more.
The menu doesn't update automatically so I downloaded and compiled
grun to use as an application launcher and edited the menu to include
a grun entry.

That really looks interesting! However,..it kind of reminds me of CrunchBang without the Conky.
I liked CrunchBang,...but it seemed a bit "limited" to me. Puppy is crammed full of more apps than CrunchBang. I'll look into this Vsido Raptor, though. I'm stuck on Slackware as my main OS, though (and various Puppies). But this looks worth the look.

Installed Slackware 14.0 again. Replaced slackpkg with slapt-get and Gslapt. Installed Steam with instructions from alienBOB. I can't launch Garry's Mod or Half-Life 2, but i can launch Half-Life. All 3 games use OpenGL for rendering graphics. I don't know the cause for the error.

I'm still using Salix Ratpoison, I installed the 32 bit version to my
eeepc 701SD.
It fit on the 4gb ssd with room to spare, approx 1.5gb free space.

After adding several applications with gslapt and using Salix on this netbook it's working great.

I've just installed the latest version of Frugalware, 1.9. It's not perfect (for example Seamonkey doesn't seem to work for some reason) but IMO it's an improvement on 1.7 (the last version of Frugalware I used) - Gnome works in it, for one thing, which it didn't in 1.7.

It's like a cross between Arch (it even uses the Pacman package manager) and Slackware.

Slackware 14.1 came out yesterday. I will be downloading it later.

I've just downloaded AntiX 13.2, and it looks good for the most part - for example, you can choose which version of Debian to set as your repository (stable, testing etc.). However I was unable to install Softmaker Office (I've got the full 2012 version) in it once I'd installed it to my hard drive, so I doubt it will be a "keeper" on my machine

My other OS is Ubuntu 12.04. My wife wanted to stay with the classic desktop with gnome-panel and its menus (which do have their advantages), and I discovered I could run the unity-2d launcher and dash along with the classic desktop. Really nice launcher (with a few hacks to make it look better). Unfortunately they discontinued unity-2d soon after 12.04, I believe. But 12.04 is supported until 2017. Maybe I'll try Mint after that.



What I just found out is that I could remaster my Ubuntu install with all its hacks and tweaks and make it bootable from a flash drive. Even save changes made while running from the flash drive so they're there the next time. So it's similar to a remastered puppy with savefile, portable and bootable on other computers (just ten times larger; 2Gb with a 1Gb savefile).

Remastersys makes the remaster pretty easy. It's no longer being developed, but the software is currently still available. I'm really glad I found it.

I decided to give Solus 1.3 one last go, following its developer's decision to stop working on it, and it seems to be working OK.

I installed the amd64 version of Debian Wheezy 7.20 to a Gateway desktop
pc,dvd 1 was a 3.7gb download, I didn't get the other 3 dvds that were
available.
I've been using synaptic to add my favourite applications but there
are other methods of adding software as well.
It's working well.
EDIT:
I did another install to an older hp desktop this time installing
xfce4 instead of gnome3.
It's working well on this one too.

I have Slackware 14.1 running since it's ISOs were released. It is working quite well for me. I have install pipelight and Steam from alienBOB's repo.
