Hi pemasu

Running ice-005 on my ram challenged laptop and all seems fine.

Seems to run much faster than most other puppy's,
in fact seems faster than all - even the tiny puppy's.

Runs at about same temperature as other's too,
maybe a degree or so higher sometimes - that's all.

No excessive cpu activity - seems to be normal + a tiny bit
occasionally.

JFYI another hardinfo report - which I suspect you will understand
better than me.

Again - many thanks for all you do for us.

This could and should be a trend setting puppy,
as far as I can see (with my very limited knowledge of
puppy and linux generally) isn't this the way all future
puppy's should be built.

So far looks like a winner - everybody benefits.

Very best regards - Ray

pemasu can I ask that you upload a DIFF file every time you release a new version. It will probably help the people with slow connections.

Thanks

For those who would like to do kernel hopping or compile drivers.
Kernel pet is designed for woof building. To swap kernels, you need to extract it and use the files manually.
I havent done that, but James C is real expert on that.
I still believe that woof building is the right way so that there is no side effects. Of course result can be fine in manual switching, but you never know.
Anyway, this kernel could be useful for next spup with new kernel. Just a tip for James C.
Just grabbed all the kernel stuff. Now if the weather would cooperate....... more tornado warnings today. My nephew lives a few blocks away and a big funnel cloud passed right over his apartment about an hour ago. waiting for the pics.

It would be nice if people (pemasu) wouldn't embed pictures greater then 600 pixels wide.
So people with small screens (yes they still exist) won't have to side scroll to read postings.
Thank you for correcting.

No luck for the 005.
Got the message that the machine doesn't support the kernel (PAE)

Ran into a problem.......

Had a frugal install of Ice Puppy 004 on the old P4 test box w/ Intel 865 onboard graphics and it worked fine. While making my last post I replaced it with a manual frugal of 005.... deleted old save file.

On initial boot, X wouldn't start.Just to make sure something didn't get copied incorrectly I booted up the cd pfix=ram. Still no X. Hmmmm.

Just booted the 004 cd as I'm typing, no problem......looking at the Ice Puppy wallpaper right now.Guess I'll revert back to 004 right now since it's working.

EDIT:

Just booted into the frugal install of 004.....no problems.

Did you try 003 yet? It has regular non-PAE kernel.... also in the first post.

IcePuppy-003 and 005 RHE release Really Highly Experimental

I did a frugal install of icepup 05 on my acer revo nettop computer.

I installed the devx and the kernel_src-2.6.38.2-lupe13.sfs but when I
went to install the proprietary nvidia ION driver I got an error
message about the nvidia fb already installed in the kernel
conflicting with the nvidia fb in the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-270.41.06.run
file.I've never seen that before and have no clue what to do about it.

Other than that problem icepup 05 is working good on this pc, although
it does run a few degrees hotter than wary 5,1,1 and spup on this pc.
It's jumping between 65C and 66C just typing this in geany.

Where are the battery icons? They are not displayed on the system try of ice puppy 005. Startup file has the file powerapplet_try listed on it. It seems it does not load at bootup.

Just for testing purposes, I tried 005 in the Intel 865 box again pfix=ram. No X.
Added the "nomodeset" parameter. No X.
Added "xforcevesa" parameter. No X.

It's not just X not starting, it's killing everything. Ctrl/Alt/Bksp has no affect, necessary to do hard poweroff.CRT monitor by the way.

No problems with 004 though.

Yes the 003 is working.
I was just curious about the 005 (as the 004 didn't last long)

Best as I can tell, there were some complaints/reports from some laptop users/testers so 004 was pulled and replaced with 005. 004 wurked fine for me on 4 different machines.... posting from it now.

It just gets stranger. Ice Puppy 005 live pfix=ram on an old P3 w/ Intel graphics.Everything working. Works on an old P3 but not on the P4.... :?
Pretty slow though.

Thank you all of the reports. It seems there is still work to do.
First notice. Highmem + PAE needs still tinkering. 005 is too incompatible to some hw. Also P4 machines are sensitive, they like i486 optimization like in 003. 005 was optimized for speed and I believe that is the reason for incompatibilities.

Did you notice in that screenshot that skype video testing shows webcam picture nicely. Well, my face is not probably that nice.........

Smokey01. I am not sure if it is good idea. I have no experience of delta files when there is different kernel. There are quite a lot sensitive stuff which have changed. So far kernel configuration has been changed with every release. At least it would be difficult for me to get accurate picture of what went wrong. I have already tried to minimize the factors by clearly stating not to use savefile when testing from previous build. It has definetely made problems. I am afraid delta file would do same.

Beem. Sorry, I did resize the pic to 1024x768. I guess I need to resize more. Unfortunately the pic is in my usb stick and not in use now.

James C. Thanks for testing in different hw. I will take the optimization down a little based on your reports. I will let 005 to the net, because it can be really fast for those who get it working.

Marco07. Powerapplet_tray probably seqfaults. It wont work for me. 1vattery still works for me and it is launched at bootup: /root/Startup/1vattery. Am I the only one getting Vattery in tray ?
Definetely the battery status on tray needs focus in the future. Thanks marco07.

I will take now a little brake and I will check the specs of wuxiandianzi from 2.6.38.3 kernel. There is possibility I will change into it.
wuxiandianzi send me email and told that it works fine for him. I suggested that I could mirror his kernel stuff in ftp site, if smokey01 accepts it ? I know you are reading this thread sometimes.

It looks like there is need for i486 without highmem + PAE and then another version with highmem + PAE but not every optimization at top.

When there is time I could make the ultimate optimized kernel for those who have hw which accepts that. Well, my laptop seems to swallow anything.

There is nonbooting reports too much so I start with brake and reading for awhile.

Making new kernel and build new Ice Puppy takes almost one day. Luckily now at Easter I have time. LOL.

Ice Puppy 005 live pfix=ram on the quad. This thing is fast. :)
