252 & where we going?

On the 252 itself... I thought there would be some more new features like 1mick0 put in his new Spup but I guess this is moving twards the next release at too much a super pace so myself, I probably won't ask (or push) for anything like I did on 520 Smile

Playdayz wrote:

Name those features please sszindian. If 01micko has implemented them then he might help us as always. But you are right that mainly we are going for updates here.

sszindian says:

1: One 'main one' he has is FPROT in the menu itself but... it's a full-featured version that finally lets you work with the program, not just a static thing in the background not knowing just what it does or how (if anything?)

2: ffconvert... a fantastic program for those of us who work on websites, constantly converting MP4's, MP3's etc to other formats.

I believe there were more but I haven't used Spup for awhile, I'm sure 01mick0 knows what they are between 520 & Spup !!! but I reliaze he's a very busy person and can only do so much.

Please don't take this the wrong way... Every programmer that is working on or currently developing a Puppy version should be in touch somehow with one another and share more of their knowledge !!! The day (at least I believe) is fast coming that Puppy Individual versions will be no more... why do I say that... If any of you have seen 'Jolicloud' and tried it, along with some other 'Cloud' systems out there, 'Cloud Computing' will be the way most of the world turns on to their computers and I believe in the not-to-far-future! Watch Distrowatch and see how Jolicloud has taken the interest of the general computing public just within the last few months... It's what the average computer-user wants... they take care of all upgraded programs, it's a fairly simple yet very-full program and completly fills the needs of the end-user.

Maybe it's time for all the Puppy programmers to get together and see if a 'Cloud Puppy' could not be developed.

Myself, I love Puppy but am starting to wear-out trying to find the Puppy that will fill all my needs, now and down the road. To be quiet truthfull Playdayz, my main Puppy program right now is Incidious Puppy002 based on Debian, I thought that would at least have the longest run time for any version of Puppy but now... that version has been dropped and again, 'you're on your own.'

Hope you see my point!

Do I understand correct that by manual upgrade, you mean copying the 3 Puppy required files from live CD into the HDD directory and maintaining the safe file from 251?
Thanks!

Just need to change the wallpaper....
Do you have to rename anything to do a full installation upgrade? It seems unusual that you can upgrade from 520 to 252.
Kinda surprised myself but it just upgraded without renaming anything.Just clicked on "upgrade" in the installer, waited a couple of minutes for the installer to work then rebooted into 252.Only problem was the icons...everything else was still installed and working.

Exactly. :) Deleted the 3 old files from 251,copied in the new files from 252 and retained the save file.

Has anyone had trouble with gparted since the release of lucid 5.2?

I know Jades has with the K6. Anyone else, with what cpu? Thanks.

Time to drop K6 support

I think you're right. I've been using Lupu 520 quite a bit on the K6 recently and keep finding things which don't quite work.

We've clearly reached the stage where to continue with supporting such an old platform is getting in the way of Lupu's purpose of being the cutting edge Puppy.
playdayz wrote:I thought a K6 *was* an i686 cpu--but now I think there must be some difference.
I suspect it's actually i586. Kernel line on the HardInfo report seems to suggest that.

I had the same issue (kernel panic) with 250, 251 but with 252 it appears (so far) to be OK! (I'm writing this on 252). Even did a shutdown and reboot.
Can you tell us which CPU and chipset that was on? May be important. The machine I usually have problems on is very old, the newer Pentium D one rarely has problems with test versions of Puppy.

K6 2 probably i586

I've just checked the test Full Install of Lupu 520 I set up on the K6 2 500 box and the HardInfo kernel line on that install also says i586. It seems that i686 started with Pentium 4 and probably AMD Athlon.

yarddog, This is a quick and dirty "fix." If it is a fix. Natty uses 1.10.13 and these are the natty files for gnumeric. It runs for me in luci-252. Perhaps you could test the fix for your bug--but be warned that even if it fixes that bug there might be other bugs but it is something to try.

d/l gnumeric-1.10.13-lucid52.pet, installed and appears to be working properly - no problems with it so far - thanks for your help

'puppy pfix=ram' boot of luci-252

:) Here is what I doned didded:

- run initial wizard
- right click on firewall wizard bottom right, run wizard
- right click on lock, select backdrop, drag in a background image

- click on desktop icon 'setup', personalise my desktop

- click on browse, add beta of Seamonkey,
in Seamonkey turn on edit/preferences/advanced/mousewheel/zoom
add my stored on hard drive bookmarks to Seamonkey, (press ctrl+b)

- run menu/internet/pup advert blocker
- run quickpet, add drivers (ATI Catalyst for me)
- goto puppy package manager, add 'transmission' under network and 'xchat' under internet
get my passwords https://lastpass.com/misc_download.php

- wait for next boot for adding sfs which will likely be OOoLight and GoogleEarth

So far all good 8)

goto Puppy forum and ask if big sections of the Puppy menu can be removed
- just need to run 'setup' . . . ?

@playdayz +

1/ I notice that the Tick Box to erase then reallign existing icons (eventmanager : desktop drive icons) is not working again.

2/ if you need more than one row of device icons at the bottom for drives, etc. the second row is half covering the bottom ones and you can't click the lower row unless you drag the upper row out the way.

Hi playdayz here's the Gnumeric packages you wanted, the Goffice, libgsf work fine with abiword.
Most people will only need the 3 pets below

@@@ Updated a missing link to the gparted bin @@@

http://www.smokey01.com/ttuuxxx/Luci-Up ... 3-i386.pet
http://www.smokey01.com/ttuuxxx/Luci-Up ... 2-i386.pet
http://www.smokey01.com/ttuuxxx/Luci-Up ... 9-i386.pet

all the other extra's like dev, doc, nls are also found in this directory, http://www.smokey01.com/ttuuxxx/Luci-Up ... c-1.10.13/ if need be, I also made the help contents work for online help, so really adding the extra doc bloat is really unneeded. Its 1/2 the size of the package you posted earlier.

Gimp, java, wine and devx living happily together in sfs-land.

Aqualung needed libmpcdec3_1.2.2-2.1ubuntu1_i386.deb.

glxgears 280, as good as I can expect, even after installing Xorg_High-1.1-Lucid.pet and xf86-video-trident-1.3.3-i486.pet.

As the kids say, mad respect and big ups!

Edit: No default chat client I could find- installed Pidgin 2.7.10 from QuickPet and it became default.chat.
Hi Tubeguy,

nice Screenshot. Is that the original one right after installation or did you modify your desktop ?

Regards from berlin

(btw..... i just noticed your puppy stuff site at zazzle....i would like to buy some stuff..how much will be the shipment costs to Germany ??)

Maybe these are nice as an inclusion for 5.2.2

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... &start=210

PuppyMartin's i-Pad theme icons.

Also Jemimah's Faenza icons may be a nice inclusion. I didn't try 5.2.2 yet, so if these are already included, please ignore the post.

xz compression is broken. As such txz and tar.xz can't be opened.

I think it was technosaurus who had a patch and I think abushcrafter had one too. I'll look further into it as time permits

Here's the latest Geany, If you click help, it will open a webpage with links to the online documents, but if you install the doc pet from below, it will install the documents locally and will open when the help button is clicked, I also moved the searchbar, to a better location, really its one of the most used features for geany, and should be assessable when fullscreen isn't in use.

This is designed to change the Google ranking of spammers, in other words, spam is not completely deleted from the forum. it is moved to another area, where it can be ranked in another way. So it is not so childish. Google recently announced a new algorithm to penalise 'spam farms'. Companies trying to up their ranking where there is a clear indication of no legitimate interest, will find their spamming tactics backfiring.

and now back to the testing . . . :)
When I rebooted for the first time (from JWM)
I was rebooted back to openbox instead
Xchat in the ppm is not set up for the Puppy forum - boo
- we did have an xchat that was but maybe the latest is not set up?
Could not be bothered to add settings so uninstalled and used pidgin instead. I installed the first pidgin in the list of options which I think might
be the latest (worked OK and chatted with Puppy users) but the list of alternatives is confusing . . .

Changed one icon set (as suggested in this thread) and a whole new list also appeared on the icon changer wizard. None of the others were populated.

Thanks for suggesting Claws as email client. Smaller and best wins
not Lobsterian loyalties . . .

I will remind testers. This is already a very stable and usable
version of Puppy.
We have seven days of bug hunting . . .
Maybe I should not quote Mr Burns from the Simpsons
(last time I did it was taken as a serious death threat by a humourless
journalist) So I will explain . . . it means 'go get em boy' and refers to bugs
and should not be taken as attacking defenceless luncheon meat purveyors

"Release the hounds!"
