Sage, did you try to install using PPM or by downloading the pets and installing it? I just tried to install nano from PPM - it fails. Tried to install encfs from PPM - it works. Tried to install opera by downloading the pet - it works (without even installing gstreamer which it says is required). I tried to install opera from PPM (after uninstalling first, of course), and it also works. All tests done in my VirtualBox "full-install" setup.

The PPM is empty on my 'true' FULL install, so used the petget/open straight from kirk's Fatdog website.

Sage, to use PPM, you need to "configure" it first (click configure and then click "update"). When done updating, close it and re-open - the items should be there.

If you want to download stright from the website, make sure you download first, open Rox, and click on it to install. You cannot choose to download and install at the same time (using the option "open with" when trying to download it). The reason is the same as given in the links I gave to capoverde - firefox, in Fatdog, runs as user "spot" which has very little privilege (for security reasons). Thus the installation, which require root access, will fail.

Thanks for that advice, jb - even I don't/can't read everything! Notwithstanding, it shouldn't be necessary to adopt such (unusual?undocumented?) routines, should it? I guess FD is a very long way back in development, though, so kirk is going to be grateful for folks like you & Bt. Seems that Oz has the best coders; as for cricketers...

Ah yes - my previous comments are (unintentionally & unfortunately) linked. Every time I start up my FULL install it is necessary to re-install the NIC & connection. Haven't had this issue for a very long time (although other folks have).

But it (the repo d/l & update) isn't working!
So, d/l from kirk's website. Took a while to find where the files went (root/spot/Downloads)! But it works, thanks. Oh boy, there is just so much work to do on this one!

Oh dear - both barrels, both feet.
On the one hand, the video performance of FD is lamentable. I could never get it to fit onto my 4:3 lcd monitor in default res. and it defies changing the res. via the menu. None of the other methods work (eg CTRL-ALT-BKSPCE) and the setup never did show up at install (fortunately, as I'd never've got a picture!). xorgwizard doesn't work and after trying to get a higher res., which the monitor might just manage, no picture and no CLI working, either. Other video drivers? Unlikely, this is a SiS Mirage1 chipset.
With the best will in the world, FD is still a dog's dinner despite the mammoth (rotweiler?) efforts of kirk, Bt, and jb. Do I really want to mess with XOrg through mc at the CLI - probably not. After all the other workarounds, might have to revisit FD in 2012 if not in training for the Olympics...

That's my fault kind of. That's one of bill's pets that where labeled i686, I changed that to x86_64, which it actually is, but the petspec inside the package is also wrong which messes up the ppm. I'll remove the offending packages.

Let me repeat this again, full hard drive installs are not recommend. This is stated in the FAQs and is why frugal installs are recommended in Puppy universal installer. I don't use full installs, and so I rarely test them. If you want to use a full install for some reason, expect problems.

Also, In case someone has missed it, Firefox is ran by user spot by default. User spot can only write to a few limited places and so cannot install packages. This is by design. This too is in the FAQs. The FAQs are very short, mainly because I hate to write docs, please spend a few minutes to look them over.

Point taken, kirk. Always like to push the envelope, but jb's method works.
If all else fails, read the FAQ...
Never one to give up, before I cleared the HD for another distro, here is what I did:
Started the CD in pfix=ram mode.
Tried to re-install FD by overwriting the old version. Usually, the PUI detects an earlier version and asks whether to Update or Overwrite - this panel was absent. I let it run anyway because it was intending to wipe it. The task was completed in record time - ominous.
Re-start from HD. Still no picture. Restart from CD with pfix=ram.
Overwrote the entire contents of the CD /etc/X11 file from CD to HD.
Re-start from HD - bingo.
This time, the menus were re-arranged with sub-menus. This did not happen in either CD or first FULL install. Many of the d/l packages appeared in the PPM this time and most of the previously installed apps were still present together with all d/l s.
Seems to be working much better now but no idea what went on.
Might keep it a little longer.
Well kirk, it may not be your intent, but a little more work could re-instate this as a legit. FULL install, which would be most helpful to the significant minority interest for this mode.

This is the Links web browser, it creates an entry in the internet
section of the puppy menu.
It is set to start up in graphics mode but if you don't want that then
start it in rxvt using the command links.

Thanks, the package manager didn't have the xchat.

The .pet from 5.0 didn't work, so, i am going to post this to the latest version's topic.
