Thanks for the offer, But I Can Locate the older hardware at a pawn shop, the are great for buying outdated stuff, lastime I purchased a really old din keyboard and a serial mouse for $5. It was for the mame system. It does need upgrading anyways, I have an older 1.8ghz amd pc that I can use for it.
Thanks again for the offer but the last time I shipped a keyboard from the USA,it cost around $40 USD in shipping, the funny part was the Superman keyboard/mouse was only $30 to start with,lol

Here are my findings. Let me know if you need anything else or any other information.

gnome sword loaded a few different Bibles commentarys, dictionaries and books from the modules. Scanning thru the Bibles it works fine, can use the dictionary and strongs concordance. When I try a search, I type in a common biblical word, love, with the bible chosen, it finds the references. With Commentary chosen, when I click on "Find" or if I use enter, GnomeSword shuts off. It did it five times in a row.
The way it looks now I have the modules on the left, then next to that I have Romans 8:28 in the top section and below that I have a previewer. Then next to that I have a window up high with four directional arrows and a pull down box and below that a larger window with another pull down window. If I click anywhere on the left side of the screen I'm good, but if I click on the right side of the screen anywhere in those two windows with the pull down windows, GnomeSword shuts off.

Opensong works pretty good. I went to the opensong website and downloaded a song pack and unpacked it in /tmp. On opensong I clicked the settings and then install module. When I choose the folder with the songs in it and press ok, Opensong shuts down. So I restarted opensong, in the menu I clicked settings and install module and didn't choose any folder. When I pressed OK opensong shuts down. I repeated the previous sequence and clicked 'cancel' instead of ok and it didn't shut down. I was able to manually move all the songs in the downloaded package into the /root/opensong/song directory an they showed up and were perfectly usable.

VLC is pretty neat. Settings-switch interface-skins or wxwidgets both shut the application down. As there were no internet radio choices I was able to copy the url from somafm (my favorite) and paste it in the url window under file-open stream and listen to the music. Then I put in "A Series of Unfortunate Events". It didn't load automatically even after I mounted hdc. But I was able to open file-open disc, click on the disc tab and type in /mnt/hdc in the device name window and the movie played beautifully. I could change the size of the screen on the fly with no hesitations. I could change subtitles while it was running. I'm using Xorg. Sound was great. I was listening thru headphones, just had to turn it up a little with sGmixer. So I can watch dvds and listen to streaming radio.

What's next?

Hi the reason why vlc shutdown is because you have to first place a skin in /usr/share/vlc/skins2/ then you click the wxwidgets, What its doing without a skin is trying switch to another one, but none are present. So it has nothing to switch to and closes.
I figured that out the other when I was trying some skins for it

Then I figured it would push the size over 10 MB so i decided not to include extra skins, I guess its compatible with xmms, winamp skins also but I only tried the 15 or so at the VLC website.
They all worked

I'll have to test the faults in open Song and GnomeSword, did you like Open Song? is it worth keeping, I'm not all that musically inclined. So I didn't test it much. Thanks for your report. I'll do my best to work out the issues.

Surprisingly I loved OpenSong and GnomeSword. VLC works fine for me but I don't know why it's better that gxine so I'll just use whatever is on there. I would most definitely use OpenSong because I'm a guitarist and sometimes I play in church so that would be a tremendous help, you wouldn't believe how many times I've had to sit down, writing the words to songs and figuring out chords and placement. This is nice. I've always wanted a computerized version of some of the study books I have and GnomeSword seems to be pretty trick. I imagine there will be more versions of things available but until then it seems pretty useful. The other guys may know a bit more about other software packages but I would use this one.

I really like what you've done with it. The theme is really nice, I can tell you've put a lot of hours into it.

Please let me know what else I can do. I keep checking back. I look forward to the final.

I have other software ready but first I wanted to test and fix a bit at a time, so I know whats effecting what and also so I don't get overwhelmed. Thats great that you like it

VLC is better for video streams like "ttuuxxx TV". VLC default display is a bit bigger for streams, plus it plays clear and less cpu resources, I was watching a Canadian News stream today with it and my memory was at 4% and the cpu usage was at 2% and I was playing fullscreen. Incredible. Plus fullscreen works and also you can change the aspect radio of the dvd while its playing, I find if you compare VLC Vs Gxine you'll notice less resources and better control of things.

I'm amazed thats its 2x+ the size and does wonders, well worth the extra size. Plus an easier way to play dvd's with it, mount your dvd and drag the video folder straight on VLC, It will start playing

Hear, hear! I agree about OpenSong. I've used a full music scoring program to enter lyrics, chords, and notes but this little program covers most church's needs for praise choruses and even hymns and you don't need to know notation to use it. An added plus is that it's extremely simple to learn and use. It's nice that you can virtually cut and paste the tab sheets from the internet, add the periods, and transpose -- very handy when some song is too high or you are working with horns and need a better key for them.

Concerning VLC: i've had problems with codecs before when i tried to play a movie in Windows Media Player; VLC came to my rescue and handled everything just fine. Perhaps it's the ONLY player necessary, and it's lighter than gxine. So - does gxine have issues playing commercial movies? or does it come with all the necessary codecs? If it doesn't, then please DO leave in VLC if for no other reason than it WORKS. Mind you, i like it anyway, so again i second Brymway.

On an unrelated issue, do you know why SkipStone isn't used more often in Puppies? It's lightweight like Dillo but works as well as Firefox (no extensions though)...

The problem with Skipstone is that it uses Mozilla headers, And at this point we only have it compiled against Seamonkey, Others have tried to compile it against "Firefox" and haven't been successful. You need to have Seamonkey installed basically on the pc where skipstone resides for it to work, It uses about 50% of Seamonkey, Once I did a test and delete around 50% of Seamonkey with trial and error, and it worked but when I deleted about 60% skipstone started acting realllllly slow.

Hmm - GnomeSword crashes every time i try to open study pad. Don't know why (this is my bigger machine so it's not for lack of processor power or memory).

Also -- Sylpheed delivers mail weird -- like, there's a delay, but not in T-Bird which i loaded. This may be a probelm with Dingo, not LW, and idk if you are going to use it or T-Bird.

Hey Guys

I'm back on living water again, I had a look at my kdebase 43MB plus 8MB Bibletime and figured well that just won't do. 51MB is very big, so I started over on the base so far I have it working already and its 17MB plus 8MB Bibletime

Thats a 23MB saving

Bibletime loaded but had a few minor issues, But I had the same issues before and fixed them once, So it should only be another couple of hours and a couple of MB.

Well I have Bibletime running well, and its still 20MB smaller than the previous version:
Also I have KWord working Its 6.5MB and the dictionary doesn't work yet, Plus it still needs a few libs, But it works.

I might drop abiword and use it , If I can keep it under 10MB

I'd love to see DansGuardian in a Puppy Linux. I'm just starting to build a computer lab at a small Christian school with little money, and I was planning to go with Ubuntu CE, which includes DansGuardian with a special GUI interface. But all of the first three old clunker towers that I tried it on wouldn't install it, and the developer of that flavor confirmed it was not for older equipment.

Since I successfully installed Puppy on my old laptop that wouldn't accept Ubuntu, I'm hoping Puppy will be the solution for our computer lab. I'm going to try installing it tomorrow.

Hi! I struggled with this for years!! Finally, i found OpenDNS -- which is FREE and works great. I set it up through our cable modem in about a half-hour as per their (easy) instructions and now ANY computer brought into our school is content-filtered. (It can also be configured on each individual unit seperately instead, if necessary.) By the way, it is totally customizable.

Alternatively, use Firefox with the ProCon Latte extension and either hide or strip out Dillo, but you'll have to install it on each computer individually.

Also -- i put together a website after doing a workshop on building a "Computer Lab on a Shoestring Budget" - it's found at http://www.shoestringpc.com. The site is dedicated to free/low-cost solutions for building a computer lab (boy did we struggle!) and includes both Windoze and Linux info; there's even a page regarding content filtering!

Well, don't do it for me. Subito has me convinced to go with OpenDNS instead.

I'm still undecided about the type of Puppy I should use. This is not for a church, but rather for a Christian school computer lab. So the TV and Bible software is not really important, other than letting students see what's available in that line.

Mainly I need a small OS for old hardware, Firefox for browsing, and OpenOffice for all that it does.

I lean toward some form of Dingo because you can install Debian packages, which is the system I'm used to. But if I could find a 3.x (don't know its name) I could use and had good stuff, I could go with that.

It's very frustrating for me trying to get a handle on how Puppy works and how to get it to do more than just run. Adding programs other than the standard Puppy stuff is the main problem. I want to be running Firefox 3 and OpenOffice 3. I have a .sfs of the latter, but I don't have a clue how to get it to run. There's no menu editor in Dingo, and I don't know where the menu file is. That kind of basic stuff may be somewhere, but I haven't found it.

firefox3 is buggy, slow and not really as good as 2.16 I would install 2.16

this firefox with flash will auto update to 2.16

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll take your recommendations about Firefox, although I think the improvements in OO3 might make it worth the effort. Someone told me in another post how to include an external .sfs.

Thanks for telling me about the .desktop file (I'm not running Puppy right now). I finally tracked down the JWM site and it talks about editing .jwmrc.

I'm still undecided about which Puppy to use. I've downloaded and will look at Fire Hydrant and Fat Free. I also have eeePuppy and eeeTiger to try on my eee PC! Good grief!

ProCon in LW might be nice, actually -- either preconfigured or with the option to install or not on first FF startup, like Janitor put in the ChurchPup beta....

Wondering about a good label program for LW -- glabel looks very smooth. IDK if this is something you'd want or if it's more of a ChurchPup- or OfficePup-type program. Just a thot...if ChurchPup ever gets going maybe it'll go in there, but as far as i can tell LW supersedes CP. That said, i'm surprised by the occasional interest shown in CP. (I usually refer them to here!!
