Sub_title: Xorg freezes

What code* do I need for 800x600x24?

By code, under the Xvesa wizard it says stuff like: "0x0103: 800x600x8 PseudoColor (no linear framebuffer)

However on the default button it says "640x480x16"

I have Puppy 2.14 and an old Armada 1535DM

I tried Xorg, but it simply froze everything up, and wouldn't go anywhere

I've got an Armada 1530 P133 80MB RAM

Xvesa didn't play well with it at all, I only managed to get 4bit colour (yes thats bits not bytes)
By tweaking Xorg I managed to get it to do 800x600 8 bit color
If the 1535 has a better graphics card with more video RAM you might find life a bit easier than me.
I would forget aspirations of 24 bit colour now unless you've seen it working somewhere else. Start trying to get 8 bit working, if that is successful back up your settings and then try 16.

If you have a problem with the automatically generated xorg configuration crashing your machine.
1. boot using xvesa any working settings will do
2. Menu - Shutdown - Exit to prompt
3. at the commandline enter "xorgwizard" run through this but do not allow it to test the configuration
4. when it drops back to the commandline enter "mp /etc/X11/xorg.conf" to open the configuration file in the mp text editor. Find the line #Option "NoAccel" and remove the hash comment character from the beginning. Now go to the bottom of the file and check the colour depth and screen resolution are sensible.
5. CTRL-S to save
6. CTRL-Q to quit
7. "xwin" to restart X

Very good Will.

I hope he responds with success, failure or questions.

As I'm sure you well know, some of us spend our valuable time helping others and giving correct or good answers.

But if people don't respond, there is an absence of validation, which would be so helpful in collective knowledge about what really works and what doesn't.

Could be your advice was spot on, but who would know, without validation?
