Recomendations please for new MB, with SATA II Low power etc

What works, and doesn't, for you. Be specific, and please include Puppy version.

Recomendations please for new MB, with SATA II Low power etc

#1 Post by veronicathecow »

Hi, my main PC (ASUS A7600 I think) just died.
I need the following specs for a replacement M.B./ PC
Works with Puppy (Obviously)
SATA II for my new 500Gb HDD
Fanless (I.E Via or Geode probably for environmental reasons (Much reduced power consumption))
Playback DVDs, DIVX etc
PATA for DVD
Boot from USB 2.0
At least 4 USB 2.0
I live in the UK
Any thoughts / links really appreciated.

Hi Picatrix thanks for the recommendation. Do you or anyone else know of someone running Puppy on this board? (It does say Linux on the info page so that's a good start)
Thanks

Hi Tony,
I'm running Puppy 2.17.1 (Tmxxine Prism) on an ebox 4853, that uses a quite similar chipset (CX700M instead of CX700M2).
At the moment the only problem is that I have no sound (snd-hda-intel), but it seems to be related to the quite "old" ALSA version on 2.17.1.
I hope to try asap the new Puppy 3.00 with te latest ALSA version, that gives a better support to the high definition audio chip VT1708.
I haven't try any 3d video acceleration / whistles & bells related stuff, but it runs flawlessly Xorg on 1280x1024x24 resolution mode...

Best Regards

VT1708 hda-intel sound problem solved!!!

Solved:
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index. ... -hda-intel

for puppy 2.17.1 (Tmxxine) and 3.00, just do this:

modprobe snd-hda-intel;
modprobe snd-pcm-oss;
modprobe snd-mixer-oss;
modprobe snd seq-oss;

be sure that the above modules will be loaded at next boot using puppy boot manager;

run alsamixer and raise the master volume;

run alsaconf from puppy alsa sound wizard...and finally you have sound!!! :D

Did you buy yet?

I've been looking at VIA EN series - http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/mainb ... ard_id=399

Look very nice. I know the 1.2GHz is fanless, not sure about the 1.5GHz

Hi Davidbell, thanks for that it certainly looks the part.
I have also just come across this MB D201GLY from Intel but it dosn't have sata which might mean a separate card but it is very cheap and almost twice as fast the the VIA machine with not much more power consumption.

This one should be about the same price as the D201GLY.

Hi Pence, yes that does look a better bet, I wonder when it will be available. I've been looking at this place as they seem cheapest for this stuff in UK
