"Cannot detect f-prot versions Aborting.............."

#1 Post by don922 »

Puppy 4.12 (retro)

Ran Menu>Utility>XF-Prot virus scanner

1. downloaded and accepted the defaults recommended by the installer
2. tried to run xf-prot by selecting the menu item

Received the following error message:
XF-PROT 1.23 - ERROR
Cannot detect f-prots version
Aborting.........
I tried running f-prot from the console with the following:
[~] xfprot /mnt/home

XFPROT 1.23

xfprot: starting...
xfprot: setting permissions of private dir to 0700
xfprot: setting owner of private dir
xfprot: chdir to private dir
xfprot: you are root!
This was followed by the following error message:
XF-PROT 1.23 - ERROR
Cannot detect f-prots version
Aborting.........
Is there a fix for this?

If there is no fix...... How do I find the files that were installed by XF-Prot so I can delete them?

I just went ahead and deleted all of xfprot and fprot. I do believe it worked when Puppy 431 first came out. Here is what I deleted manually:

/usr/local/bin/Xfprot_Scan
/usr/local/bin/Xfprot_Update
/usr/local/bin/xfprot
/usr/local/f-prot #directory
/usr/local/xfprot #directory
/usr/share/man/man8/fpupdate.8 #link
/usr/share/man/man1/fpscan.1 #link
/usr/share/man/man5/f-prot.conf.5 #link
/usr/share/icons/xfprot-gtk.png
/etc/crontab #delete the contents for xfprot
/etc/f-prot.conf #link
/root/.xfprot #directory

I think that is all, I will try Avast, if I need a anti-virus in Puppy for Windows.

Hello,

Use a newer version of the xfprot "gui" for fprot.
I've tested version 2.3 in Puppy 4.3.

1. Go to:
http://web.tiscali.it/sharp/xfprot/

2a. Download, unpack, and compile:
http://web.tiscali.it/sharp/xfprot/xfprot-2.3.tar.gz
or
2b. Download and unpack the rpm package for Fedora:
http://web.tiscali.it/sharp/xfprot/xfpr ... 2.i386.rpm

(If needed, get an "un-rpm".pet from:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... ch&id=8356).

3. Test the newer version of xfprot by running it from the directory
where it was unpacked or compiled.

4. If the newer version works for you, rename the older version's files (e.g. xfprot.old, Xfprot_Scan.old, Xfprot_Update.old) and place the updated copies in /usr/local/bin. (Place license info. in /usr/local/share/xfprot to eliminate an error message).

Good Luck

I just downloaded xfprot-2.3-2.i386.rpm & fp-Linux-i686-ws.tar.gz, installed them both, and can confirm xf-prot works with p412.

I was hoping that the xfprot included in P4.12 could be fixed or at least used. Why was it included in the Puppy if it is broken & can't be fixed? The only fix seems to be deleting the files setup in P4.12 and downloading a newer version. Maybe, Avast is a better solution?

muggins: Am I to understand that you basically followed the procedure outlined by Nym1, except, you used fp-Linux-i686-ws.tar.gz? I am not sure what Nym1 used.

muggins: Did you have to compile anything - I fear and don't really understand compiling.

muggins: How did you run your installation? From the console or from the control panel? Where did you put the xf-prot files?

In any event, whether I keep xfprot or trash it and try something else; I thank Kal, Nym1, and muggins for your help and advice.

@don922,

no compiling...simply extract the xfprot-2.3-2.i386.rpm somewhere, then copy across the /usr directory, then download & extract fp-Linux-i686-ws.tar.gz, then run the contained command install-f-prot.pl.

Hi muggins, I'm having the same problem as the OP but with puppy 4.31

I too would like to be able to use my puppy thumb to scan Windows machines for viruses. I tried to do what you said above but the second link is broken. Do you have any suggestions for an alternative?

It sure would be nice to know why the distro didn't work right ...

...[ edit ]

I can get it to run as a command line tool, but the gui from the menu still produces the same error.

Ok, I was able to download the 2.3 frontend gui here and get it to compile. I copied the "xfprot" executable to /usr/local/xfprot and rename it xfprot-gtk (after renaming the original) and everything works great.

Thanks in advance ...

The poster who said xfprot used to work in Puppy 4.3.1 is correct. At some point, a new version of xfprot was uploaded to the repos that does not work.
How very Debian (to upload stuff that has not been tested).
Sorry I don't have a solution - only share the frustration of the poster(s) having this issue. I used to use Puppy for rescue and virus removal. Now, I cannot.
