Questions re finding, installing, using file search tools

#1 Post by efiguy »

Hi group,

Unfortunately, this 24 yr windows veteran, could use some help finding "File Search Tools", "Pupget manager", P-find, and any other "Newbie Dos/Win like file tools.

More deeply, if these packages are found, where do they need to reside on a bootable HD?
This is a real anguish for this Newbie

Is there a package of file tools (ugh, like explorer 98, hate xp) that would install, AND add menus for the tools? Some packages don't seem to add menu's, What to do then?

The Puppy 4.1 package currently working with, (Well think it is 4.1, don't know how to find the VER) has a limited Universal installer compared to Lighthouse-d

Thanks for any info

Hi for menu listings you need a file in /usr/share/applications
if you right click on any of those files and select "open as text"
you'll see a few things like

Exec=abiword
Icon=abiword-mini.xpm
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Application;Office;WordProcessor;
StartupNotify=true
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=AbiWord word processor

there's really only a couple of lines which really matter
exec= abiword <---- name of file to launch
Name=AbiWord word processor <--- actual name in the menu
Icon=abiword-mini.xpm <--- the icon for the menu
Categories=Application;Office;WordProcessor; <---- where in the menu will it be listed

The main search too for puppy os Pfind and is located in Menu/Filesystem/Pfind

If you installed a package usually the bin file which executes/starts most programs are located in
/bin
/usr/bin
/sbin
/usr/sbin
/usr/local/bin
/usr/local/sbin

Barry did have a automatic erase the package file if located and install in /root/ directory in a few release, so it could be just deleted also, not sure about 4 series, but it was in 5 series.

Finding stuff:

Menu>filesystem>pfind...shows paths to files in roxfiler.

Menu>setup>puppy package manager....clicking a pet will
install them to where they need to be; not all packages need
or have a entry in menu. If you decide to uninstall a package,
click the column button that the package came from first.

Puppy version....insert the cd, click cd icon, Pup 4xx.sfs?
Kernel version....type....uname -r in console.

Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.

Thank You, have printed for reference

But, as to version info -- larger issue is not even having a RUN or Console menu item -- How does one open "Console" It Can't be Terminal, as everthing entered there causes a d___ Bleep

Appreciate info and thank you

The console, or "rxvt" is the screen at top of desk top
with >_ in it usually.

Or menu>utility>rxvt.

Type in whatever commands and hit enter.

Thank you RJ,

I am not finding anything in menu bars that resembles rxvt or anything related to console or non GUI

I found P-find but it won't work because Psearch 1.9 can't find dependencies

It's a loop kind of thing that it won't break free of!!

Thanks for suggestions - probably will work on Puppy other than Webserverpuppy which (in my humble opinion) Could use a few more tools and applications, gimp, java, psearch an Pfind, console, petget, as a sample - perhaps a pre-configured batch in some sfs format ;)

Thank You

File Serch Tools

#8 Post by efiguy »

Hi RJ,

My posts start around 2nd or 3rd page
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 31&t=43285

I have HD installs of both versions simple pages served from (webserverpuppyX1.iso) Apache 97Meg (working on "Alias config setup") and Hiawathia version 6.14 (webserverpuppy1.iso) Puppy 76M ( ! Note: I had problems with 2 different browsers downloading this file -- Would start fast and then fail, my solution was to Start manager download, but leave the save button unclicked, - the file now downloads slowly in the background - watch the disk light - when activity stops - Then Click the Save Button --- Takes alot of time!)

I don't have Hiawatha serving pages yet - - but the virtual modes and security seem to make it my eventual choice -- if i can figure out configuration -- boots OK from HD.

Have another question for you to think about -- How to mount a Fat32 drive during Grub Linux boot selection, Linux Puppy gives no startup options in congiguration menu or Pmount preferences -- Leaving the Fat32 mounted and closing does't work either???

Thank You
