18.0.5 +5 frugal Grub4Dos install (ext2 savefile) on Fujitsu S761 i5 based laptop updated to 18.06. Video driver, resolution and FPS ok. Sound and Ath9k wifi using SNS fine. Clean dmesg, no issues noted in daily use, slimjet, geany, PCManFM, PDF viewing, printing... No optical drives on this i5 beater so no tests there.

Pursuant to http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 059#988059, I have reverted to slimjet 18.0.5.0 for now. 19.0.2.0 (and 19.0.3.0 and 19.0.4.0) have issues loading flash on some sites such as displaying loops at https://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid ... 11&loop=no Since it's so site specific I didn't see it for a while but I use that radar a lot hence my reverting. It's been discussed on the slimjet forum and I've worked with pepperflash version, library versions and libffmpeg.so without success. The vast majority of sites, youtube, etc. are ok, slimjet 18.0.5.0 is rock solid, and your newest chromium SFS for 18.06 doesn't exhibit that behavior so for me it's just wait and see. Shows up in both 32b and 64b 19.x.x.x slimjets, both yours and my home-rolled. Just a FYI.

Cheers,
Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

Your 4.17.6-lxpup64 kernel was run in the following pups on this i5 laptop

Code: Select all

System: Host: puppypc395 Kernel: 4.17.6-lxpup64 x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: LXDE (Openbox 3.6.1)
           Distro: LxPupSc64 18.06
Machine: Device: laptop System: FUJITSU product: LIFEBOOK S761 serial: R2500459
Mobo: FUJITSU model: FJNB225 serial: N/A
UEFI [Legacy]: FUJITSU // Phoenix v: Version 1.17 date: 03/14/2012
Battery CMB1: charge: 62.2 Wh 100.0% condition: 62.2/62.2 Wh (100%)
CPU: Dual core Intel Core i5-2520M (-HT-MCP-) speed/max: 815/2501 MHz
Graphics: Card: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.Org 1.20.0 drivers: intel (unloaded: modesetting, vesa) FAILED: fbdev
           Resolution: 1366x768@60.00hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Sandybridge Mobile version: 3.3 Mesa 18.1.3
Network: Card: Qualcomm Atheros AR9287 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) driver: ath9k
Drives: HDD Total Size: 120.0GB (30.6% used)
Weather: Conditions: 84 F (29 C) - Clear Time: July 12, 8:54 PM CDT
Info: Processes: 151 Uptime: 6 min Memory: 349.7/4789.9MB Client: Shell (bash) inxi: 2.3.40
LxPupSc64 18.06 +1, LxPupSc 18.06 +1, LxPupBionic 18.05 +4, and upupbb 18.05 +7. All booted and run well, video FPS as good or better than the stock kernels in all, CPU idle % unchanged from stock kernels in all, idle memory use (Lxtask reported) is up from 109Mb with the 4.4.96 32b kernel in upupbb to 172Mb. Not of much consequence in the i5. Mitigation as expected

Code: Select all

meltdown	: Mitigation	: PTI
spec_store_bypass	: Vulnerable
spectre_v1	: Mitigation	: __user pointer sanitization
spectre_v2	: Mitigation	: Full generic retpoline
The spec_store_bypass waits (still) on microcode from intel for the second gen i5. This kernel supports 'late' install of the microcode so testing is simple.

Cheers,

Info: Processes: 110 Uptime: 1:04 Memory: 174.6/1849.5MB Client: Shell (bash) inxi: 2.3.8

I had to add intel_pstate=disable to the kernel line of the menu.lst
file to get the cpu frequency scaling tool to work properly.

Thanks.

EDIT: I added pminstaller.sh to my Slackware64 and installed the latest
version, ublock origin works again.
I went to the palemoon site and installed ublock updater first, the
heading at the top of that page has a link and instructions on how to
install a legacy version of ublock origin.
It's only been available for a few days, working fine so far.

18.06 +2 delta downloaded and applied. md5sum correct. Tests on autoplay of CDs and DVDs all good on the standard frugal install to the Fujitsu S761 i5 based laptop.

Pristine boot (4.16.13 64b kernel), using pmusic for CD and gnome-mplayer for DVD (defaults). Both autoplays fine.

Updated 18.06 savefile. Here I had to force an update of the puppy eventmanager config file by changing the configuration and changing it back. I also have gnome-mplayer set as the default CD player, my preference only:

Updated savefile with 4.16.13 64b kernel: Both CD and DVD autoplay correctly

Updated savefile with 4.17.8 64b kernel: Both CD and DVD autoplay correctly.

Updated savefile with 4.14.56 32b kernel: Now both CDs and DVDs autoplay correctly. Might be a function of my eventmanager config update, as no pristine iso was available for those earlier tests and I ran with my savefile. I didn't go back to 18.06 +1 and recheck that as 18.06 +2 fixes the CD autoplay...

Kernel 4.17.9 not run yet.

Posting from 18.06 +2 now, 4.17.8 64b kernel as usual.

Quickly tested the 4.17.10-lxpup64 kernel in LxPupSc 18.06 +2. Seems good.
Grub4Dos frugal install in my i5 based laptop. CPU idle and base mem use unchanged from 4.17.8, glxgears FPS pretty much unchanged. Only a couple of minor nags in dmesg, regulatory.db not loaded etc. Autoplay of CD and DVD ok in both a pristine boot and my updated savefile. SNS connection using the Atheros 9k card fine as usual. Sound remains fine. Mitigation good and unchanged from 4.17.8, still no microde for the 2nd gen i5 from intel for the spec_bypass mitigation.

I also tested that kernel in LxPupSc64 18.06 +1. All is ok there also except for no autoplays, CD or DVD. It's not the kernel. I went back and rechecked that 18.06 +1 with several kernels now I have an optical drive in this i5 and it looks to me as if the compiled for 64bit eventmanager there isn't picking up /dev/sr0 at all. Playing either audio CD or DVD directly from either pmusic or gnome-mplayer works correctly. I'll look at it more later and post in that thread.

Thanks,
