Puppy won't boot from USB memory stick
Puppy won't boot from USB memory stick
Good afternoon. Please be kind to a newby to Puppy & Linux who hopes he has not strayed too far into the big boys' world.
I can boot into Puppy xenial 7.5 from a prepared CD and I believe I have successfully prepared a memory stick.
This shows most files as on the CD and is formatted in VFat (having tried ext2 and Fat16) It is flagged as Boot.
I have set (under advanced BIOS) Bios boot devices for USB-FDD as first, CDROM as 2nd and HardDisk as 3rd. but the PC boots from CD even when USB is inserted , or if CD not present but USB inserted, from HDD (into WindowsXP).
Under Boot devices 1 shows ChHardDisk M WDC WD800BB-55JKC0 and 2 Bootable add in cards.
I suspect my BIOS settings (Phoenix 6) but have insufficient knowledge to progress.
Once booted, the USB stick can be seen along with the CD and Hard disk.
Any help would be welcome.

If you did get it installed on the USB stick correctly.
It sounds like you are not getting the bios to select it to boot from.
Do not have the CD in the disk drive.
Also, try a different USB port.
Have the USB stick plugged in.
Boot the computer and enter the bios setup.
In the bios setup there should be a place to select boot device and set the order in which they are used.
Make sure the first boot device is the USB stick.
Make sure the setup is saved when you close/exit the bios setup.
Most computers also offer a boot device selection screen, that does not require entering the bios setup.
Just as the computer starts.
Usually press F8 or F12 down until the boot device selection screen pops up.
Should list all devices and you can select which one to use.

Good point rcrsn51!
Make sure the USB stick is formatted fat32 and flagged as boot.
Some computers will not see anything else as a boot-able USB Stick device.
Got any other option that looks like it is a USB device???I have set (under advanced BIOS) Bios boot devices for USB-FDD as first

Do not have the CD in the disk drive. Then it boots to hard disc & windows
Also, try a different USB port.No difference

Pretty ancient WinFast 760GXK8MC May try the stick on some other PC tomorrowrcrsn51 wrote:USB-FDD means "floppy disk drive". Your memory stick needs to be detected as an alternative hard drive.
In the BIOS, look for a list of bootable hard drives.
Is this an old computer? It may not allow booting off flash drives.

In Universal Installer try the Bootflash USB Installer option.
Select to set it up as a USB-Zip or USB-FDD.
Try that as the device to boot from.

I have now installed Puppy as a dual boot to the PC hard drive using Grub.
Boot works satisfactorily.
In advanced settings during Grub boot-up, the USB stick is shown as a boot from option, but trying to use it, shows up as drive not present.
It looks as though the PC will not permit boot from USB stick. Dual booting will suffice for the purpose wanted from this PC.
Thanks for all the help.

Best give your computer specs.
Just so you know..rcrsn51 and bigpup are top drawer people
for Puppy advice.
rcrsn51 also has a different booter he has posted and is a printer wizard.
For example my newer gaming computer ( 3 years old )
has an Asus motherboard.
And it is a real bitch to get going.
On all the Asus boards did anyone mention...
HIT F8 to get better options for usb booting.
Anyway it behaves much better now but occasionally it
won't boot one that I know is perfect.

Old post on usbs.

So post the motherboard or if it is a brand the model number
and if it is HP, Dell, Acer etc.
Chris.

I actually prefer it this way.TWPup wrote:I have now installed Puppy as a dual boot to the PC hard drive using Grub.

Dual booting will suffice for the purpose wanted from this PC.
From the time I used to boot often from usb on a AMD Palomino I remember I used Rufus to make the usb.
Rufus only runs on windows and it has an install option for old hardware support.
I don't know if 'modern' rufus still has it, with the arrival of uefi and all. You may need an older rufus to try that.
Another thing that worked iirc was a simple manual frugal install and grub4dos. This still works nicely on uefi with legacy support.
I cannot remember if I had to do something in de bios besides putting one of the usb options first, but it is possible.
I should have to try it, but that old AMD is on the attic now.
Which is where this should be but it is a good old workhorse for the user's needs.foxpup wrote:I actually prefer it this way. It will do for this, but will explore with another PC for future use of Puppy.TWPup wrote:I have now installed Puppy as a dual boot to the PC hard drive using Grub.

I have had good success using the PloP Boot Manager on PC's that do not normally allow booting from USB.
https://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager/download.html
https://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager/download.html
PLop -- enable USB-Stick boot on computers which can't
Follow up on Les Kerf's post. See this thread: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 084#653084 and particularly Les Kerf's post at the end. Note the distinction between plpbtin.iso and plpbt.iso: the former has the letters "in" in its name and is the one to use.

You are not using a usb 3.0 device are you?
You are only usb 2.0 capable.
Try another port to boot.
Or boot Puppy from a cd, get to the desktop, insert the usb and check
with Gparted your usb.
Select only >>> USB
See if LBA and Boot are ticked for your usb.
Specs:
