How to back up my HDD in Slacko?

I'm running Slacko 5.9.3 on an HPG56 laptop, recently I started experiencing great difficulty switching on the machine, I can hear it powering up but nothing else seems to happen, I've changed the battery, and the Hard drive, neither seems to solve the problem and occasionally it seems to spontaneously recover. So I'm going to start backing up my HDD. The only problem is, search as I might, I can't find anything about backing up data on the HDD.

Is there a simple way of doing this please? Thanks

Have you changed the Hard Drive? But you want a copy of it? I do not get it.

You have any idea what is the trouble? Is the CPU falling out? The graphic card? (Try to startup without X.) Did you clean the inside?

To copy, some ideas:
Best to startup and run from usb, so the HDD is not in use. If that does not work (cpu bad) you may have to take HDD out and rescue the data with another machine!
To copy, I can think of 2 principal ways:
- just copy (command cp) what you want to rescue
- if you want to keep the filesystem and all, use the command dd
If your HDD is damaged or the data on it is corrupted you may need special rescue tools. Hopefully not! There is a PupRescue.

Boot Puppy off cd or usb.

For that model I use Precise 5.61 but a later version would do.
Lucid should be fine as well.

It is amazing how many times I have rescued different machines with precise.

Once booted mount the HP drive.

Be sure to note the correct partition...HP might have 4.

Mount an external usb drive such as a cheap Toshiba.

Make a directory on the portable drive such as ...

1 Backup June 2018.

Copy all files to there.

Don't forget email, contacts etc.
My mail is located at

C:\Users\Me2018|AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Seamonkey\Profiles
etc etc as my user name is Me2018 for Windows.

Always...Always use copy...NEVER use Move.
Pics and docs may also be in your desktop and the root of the drive.

G'day Leith R,

Commiserations with your lap-top's problem. Desktops are easier to rescue in my experience - with 'terminal' laptops, I am just happy to pull out the hard-drive and pop it in a (cheap) USB cradle for data storage, and then consign the drive-less laptop to the e-waste-bin. Although I am starting to have too many of these ex-laptop-now-USB-drives, laptops being what they are.

The only problem is, search as I might, I can't find anything about backing up data on the HDD.

Do you want to save just your own data (stuff you've added to the subdirectory with the 'fixed' Puppy files) or everything on the laptop hard-drive?

Backup options should be in Slacko's Utility Menu - what do you see if/when Puppy runs?

I'd want to save 'my' data first, so look to copy out to a USB or other safe place as cthisbear suggested, all my Puppy savefiles and everything on any data partitions.

Saving the easily replaced Puppy OS files would be the last priority.

I will agree with foxpup on one point for definite. When was the laptop last thoroughly cleaned out.....if necessary, removing the case-back and/or keyboard?

Sounds like overheating may be one of the causes.....and over-dry, rock-hard thermal paste on the heatsink does not help matters. At all.

Any of the above back-up methods should work fine.
