Bit of further investigation shows this issue is due to pup-volume-monitor which is essential for PcManFM and is still running after switching to JWM.

The solution is to remove execute permission from:
/etc/init.d/start-pup-volume-monitor
and reboot

I still pine for Eudora
Strange you should say that, Marv. I retain a .pet that one of our clan kindly produced a couple of centuries ago and sometimes unwrap and load it. Most subsequent Puppies accept it without flinching, but things move on and I'd only expect succes with true 32bit offerings, but you never know...

Places clutter and other niggles

#983 Post by davids45 »

G'day peebee,

Thanks for your replies to my a bit 'off-distro' questions as an addicted JWM/Rox user.
The solution is to remove execute permission from:
/etc/init.d/start-pup-volume-monitor
and reboot
By coincidence, this morning I'm posting from an earlier LxPupSc (18.04) so have removed the exec permission as you suggest but will have to wait until I leave the forum and reboot. If this works, I'll pin it on my noticeboard to see if it fixes other Pups with this nagging clutter problem (for me anyway).

I'll also try your other suggestions and report back in case there are other users with the same minor problems.

First trials to fix some minor issues

#984 Post by davids45 »

G'day peebee,

I've now made a LxPupBionic to compare with LxPupSc in regard to the minor problems in an earlier post of mine to which you replied:
On your 3 comments:
1. this could be gvfs related - does LxPupBionic have the same issue?
2. no idea I'm afraid - does slacko-6.9.9.9 have this issue?
3. there are many variants of Rox around with different patches....the one in LxPupSc comes from slacko and is adequate for its intended purpose - you could try the one in upupbb:
http://www.smokey01.com/peebee/upupbb/e ... 6_s704.pet
or you could try the experimental one from woodenshoe-wi:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 140#990140
So far....
1. LxPupBionic had the 'Open file' clutter, but your fix to stop /etc/init.d/start-systen-monitor executing (changing its properties) has done the trick :) . I've printed off your post and pinned it to my corkboard so I can use this fix in other affected Pups - unless there's an unintended side effect

2. LxPupBionic is fine, with inkgui telling me I need to replace my magenta and cyan cartidges soon..
I don't recall any slacko-6.9.9.9s having this 'no printer found' problem but I am still to check some of these.

3. Rox column inflexibility: obviously a more complex "problem" to fix and I'm fairly used to having to deal with wanted columns being off-window. When I have the time, I'll see if any of your links provide an improvement.

Your clutter-fix worked in LxPupSc-18.04 and next I'll see how the latest delta update for LxPupSc-18.05 responds.
Your use-case is somewhat unusual.....LxPup is meant to be primarily an LXDE based system although JWM/Rox are retained in the build for "emergency purposes".... + you have "more than the average" number of partitions on your system....
You're quite right - I took a while to get interested in your LxPups as I hadn't found any benefit in LXDE compared to JWM (latest screenshots attached).
Your 'bait' that caught me was your use of a 64-bit kernel in a 32-bit Pup (and still having JWM and Rox kept me hooked).
Is LxPupBionic also using a 64-bit kernel or is it just the same as your 'regular' Bionic Pups?

Thanks again,
David S.

UPupBB & LxPupBionic ship with a 32-bit kernel but they should work (untested) by swapping in the 64-bit kernel from LxPupSc.

Update on Places clutter & Inklevel

#986 Post by davids45 »

G'day peebee,

Thanks for the info on the 32-bit kernel in Bionics and the possibility of trying the 64-bit Sc kernel ("untested" - an interesting word  ).

I've now made a LxPupSc-18.05+3 (via the delta). I deleted the six OS files in my 18.05+1 but kept its savefile after renaming it to '3' in place of '1'.

Booted fine and all my existing apps links were present (the 'old' savefile worked).

Every 'Open file' dialog was still 'cluttered' so I re-propertied /etc/init.d/start-pup-volume-monitor to be non-executable. And the clutter was gone.

While the inkgui package would not work ('no printer found') in these LxPupScs, I had yesterday tried the more elaborate Epson-provided escputil package (as a .deb file) in my now 'deceased' LxPupSc-1805+1, .... and it worked  . And it still worked when I updated to +3 with the +1 savefile (screenshot)  . Still need to replace two cartridges :( .
Anyway, that's an ink-level work-around for the Scs while the Bionics and most other Pups are still good with inkgui. Maybe this is kernel-related? If you don't have an inkjet printer, then this will be all Greek to you no doubt.

kernel update/switch

#988 Post by davids45 »

G'day peebee,

Or should that be 'peabee' as per your sourceforge page identity (like Spike Milligan, are you too a famous typographical error  )

Thanks for your next LxPupSc delta which I'll use soon.

Rox-Filer fix:
In an earlier post, I raised my problem of Rox's inflexible column lay-out and you posted a few links to explore.
Thanks to those, I've found that an old (2011) Rox-Filer bin file (the one in /usr/local/apps/Rox-Filer/), when switched for the one in your Pup, will allow columns to be moved around and, even better, its default layout has the 'Last Modified' column visible in the opening Rox window, not out-of-sight off-window to the right-hand end of the columns.
As a user, not a developer, this column is what I look to most in manipulating files with Rox. So with this old Rox bin file, I don't actually need to move the columns with this default lay-out. I've used this fix with quite a few other Pups with no problems so far.

Kernel replacement:
With your latest delta upload, you've added a separate newer kernel. Have you a simple guide as to how to replace the kernel in your LxPups?
I did a kernel switch years ago in a Tahr Pup (following directions) and recall using wiak's MakePups to create Pups with different kernels (32-bit with 32-bit) but is putting a 64-bit kernel in a 32-bit Pup straightforward (for someone not really knowing what I'm, oops, he's doing  )?

Hi David

Frugal installs only....
Click on the huge-*.tar.bz2 file, extract the 2 files therein.
Move the 2 files to your frugal install folder (if you've extracted somewhere else)
Delete or rename the existing vmlinuz and zdrv* files
Rename the 2 new files to vmlinuz and zdrv*
Reboot

LxPupSc-18.06M-k64 is a 32-bit woof-ce 'master' branch build with a 64-bit kernel (therefore only compatible with 64-bit capable processors)

LxPupSc-18.06M-k64.iso {devx} - (devx does not include kernel sources or headers) {kernel 4.16.13-lxpup64 sources}

iso md5 = 06eaf96e43f014bb596388d02d7cc6eb

Interim delta updates and newer kernels may be available.

Delta from 18.05T is available

- kernel 4.16.13 64-bit built with GCC-7.3.0
(alternative 32-bit kernels 3.16.x 4.4.x 4.9.x & 4.14.x also available - all need firmware in the fdrv)
- Made from Slackware-Current as of Fri Jun 1 21:28:10 UTC 2018
- BUILD_FROM_WOOF='master;b434351e;2018-05-24 23:29:04 +0800'
- web browser in adrv is light-48.0
- ffmpeg is upgraded to 4.0
- firmware is in fdrv
- alternative fall-back xorg is in ydrv (no need to install unless needed)

**N.B. the 64-bit kernel means that any kernel drivers have to be built in a true 64-bit system - LxPupSc64 with it's own devx is suggested but use the kernel sources above

Woof-CE build repository is: http://smokey01.com/peebee/slackocurrent/

Chromium, Firefox, Palemoon and Seamonkey are in the repository and installable via Internet -> Get Web Browser

The versions of the browsers as of 02-jun-2018 with their md5sums are:
chromium_67.0.3396.62+pepper_29.0.0.171 RUN-AS-SPOT :26b3fc0c237a49f18ca088236f2182e8

The package manager is slow but it does work.
Tried to compile but kernel headers needed I guess so no go.

That's it so far.

The kernel is 64-bit so to compile drivers you need to install this kernel into a 64-bit system with a 64-bit devx.... LxPupSc64 is suggested....

Compiling works now, thanks.
I forgot to mention that my install wouldn't boot until I edited the
menu.lst file:
# menu.lst produced by grub4dosconfig-v1.9.2
color blue/cyan yellow/blue white/black cyan/black
#splashimage=/splash.xpm
timeout 10
default 10

I changed the default from 0 to 10 and it booted fine after doing that.

As I read the phoronix note, that mitigation on the Intel side also requires new microcode that isn't out yet.
Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

I installed to a 32gb usb-3.0 flash drive:

I installed the same apps with PPM as the install on my Compaq

This pc has a nvidia graphics card, the nouveau driver did not work
well, tearing in streaming video, so I swithed to the built in intel
grapics which is working much better.
