ROX Filer - Copy Paste in windows way (kind of)

#1 Post by drunkjedi »

This is kind of stupid.... :P
Many of you may know this already, I just found out....

I copy paste by opening two rox windows side by side and dragging files between them. (There's an excellent "roxset" app on forum for opening two rox windows side by side.)

Another way is to right click a file, select copy, type and change the path. This is hard way, but you can change the file name too while copying with this method, so can make copies of same file with different name at same/different locations.

What this how to is about is,
I found while experimenting that the icon in the copy window is draggable.

You can right-click a file and select copy or just ctrl+C a file.
You can do this to multiple files too (one-by-one, not all at once)

Then go to another folder in the same/another rox window and Drag the icon on the copy messages.

Many people may know this already.
It's kind of like in windows where you select copy on one location and then select paste on another.

Drag this icon to the folder where you want to copy file.

You are still opening two filers to do it so just dragging the original file saves one click yes?

Your way right click on file choose copy, drag icon to new window
Normal left click drag to new locaton -done.

Interesting that the icon is dragable though thanks.

I use multicopypaste which comes closest to how windows work. I'm not one for dragging stuff around, it's messy.

Hi drunkjedi et al,

I see you, drunkjedi, have posted many times in this interesting thread:

The attatched screenshot of MochiMoppel's 5 star MMview may be of relevant interest to yourself and others.

No actually I can open only one Window, select copy on file/files.
Then in same window navigate to another location and select more file/files to copy.
Then navigate to third locationin same Window and drag back the file/files.

I was just surprised that the icon was draggable, and experimented with it.

@mfb, yes I do use mmview regularly.
I just wanted to share something I found.
Might be useful for someone....

Is multicopypaste the name of a utility or are you referring to using the ctrl key to select multi files?

Yes, it will certainly be useful for me. It's using the copy window as a "buffer" to store the target file I want to paste.
I always missed copy/paste in ROXFiler. This is pretty neat. Thanks DJ!

That was (is) the standard way to do things in RISC OS. Alone it was a bit awkward really and other 'better' methods came alone that were more popular. So only natural that some of those features from RISC have also propagated across to RISC on X (Rox)

Yes. Reading the comments on that thread before using the application is also useful.
