Hi godog; Does "ps" show: nmbd, smbd, & xinet running?

The SAVE file should have all the startup scripts in it of course, so it should work.

I checked and no, they are not running. The eth0 interface is up and running and the conf files are in in lanpup_conf\etc. What else can I check for?

look at the file: /etc/rc.d/rc.local for the line: /etc/rc.d/rc.pupserv

look at the file: rc.pupserv for the lines:

/etc/rc.d/rc.samba start ##### Start Samba Server

mkdir /var/lib/dhcp3 # dhcpd setup
touch /var/lib/dhcp3/dhcpd.leases
/usr/sbin/dhcpd3 ##### Start DHCP3 damon

mkdir /var/lib/tftpboot # tftpd setup
ln -s /mnt/home/tftpboot /
/usr/sbin/xinetd ##### Start XINET damon

They should all be there, in the pupSRV file.
/pupserv/lanpuppy_conf is just a backup dir., it isn't run from.

The dirs. in / of the chosen partition are:
/pupserv
/lanpup
/tftpboot
/docs
/public

and files in / are:
/pupSRV
/usr_cram.fs

too excited... got wrong files??

#49 Post by godog »

I cannot find any sign of DHCP, Samba or tftp starting. I must have grabbed the wrong files from MU ftp site. What I have is

PupServer1-10_alpha.tar.gz file size 64,633,894 and
LanPuppy1-10_SimplePup_alpha.tar.gz size 88,435,803

Please keep me posted as to when the correct(?) files are available. I have several machines ready and waiting for testing. Thanks again

m1r0; It's easier for you as a noob to run Win & make the partition FAT32.
In Win destroy the partition, make a new one, format & systemize it for
DOS, now it'll boot DOS, then put the /pupserv/pupserv.bat file in /

With dosgzip.exe & dostar.exe, GunZip the 2 files & then unTar them in /
Reboot & press [F8] to get boot menu, then type: pupserv.bat

If you want to put it on another type of partition, then you'll have to set it up.
SysLinux is my choice for a boot loader, but Grub is good also & popular.

PupServer "should" adapt itself to whatever network that it's dropped in to.
This is one of the MOST crucial tests for it, as it is a network server.

There's 2 user's (UserName: us ,PassWord: US) (UserName: me ,PassWord: ME).
You can remove them & add others with the LanPuppyAdmin. utility.

There's many many parts to these 2 packages, I've tried everything out
but I'm sure there's stuff that'll fail on you, but hey... that's why it's "alpha".

It boots off a HD only... You unGzip & unTar in the "/" dir., these 2 files:

LanPuppy1-10_xxxx_alpha.tar.gz
PupServer1-10_xxxx_alpha.tar.gz

To extract the 2 files you need: dostar & dosgzip

As I said... I think you should make the partition FAT32 & systemized.
Then while booting press [F8] & select: "DOS Prompt Only"
At the DOS prompt type: "copy \pupserv\pupserv.bat \"
Then type: "\pupserv.bat" And PupServer should startup.

Oh, man... Why? I had in mind to use it to share files and folders on the Windows 2000 install that forgot the password.

Too bad NTFS is such a pickle, I don't even want to think about working with it.

Eventually I'd like to see a LiveCD made from it, it wouldn't be hard to do.
Just some monor changes in the way PupServer sets itself up.
A USB version I definately intend to make for a portable Demo of it.

My kids have all the other PCs tied up... does Gaim do M$M?

I'm looking at the DotPup downloader & I don't see Gaim in Instant Messaging.

For Puppy-1, I do see: Attm, BitWise, xChat, & Yahoo. Will any of them work?
