Meltdown-Spectre mitigation BIOS updates for Dell computers

#1 Post by 6502coder »

If you own a Dell computer and are an ordinary retail customer, you probably have not heard squat from Dell about Meltdown-Spectre mitigation BIOS updates for your Dell computer. I certainly haven't. The link below has the current instructions for updating your BIOS:

http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/SLN308587

CAVEATS:
1. I have not personally tested any of these BIOS patches.
EDIT: Just successfully updated my XPS 8700 desktop system to A12 BIOS dated 23 feb 2018.
2. READ everything carefully before attempting to update your BIOS.

Thanks for posting this. A good reminder to check for BIOS update on Dell website. Just update my Latitude 3350 laptop.

just patched a opti 7010 bios, available since 2018.03.14, labelled a28.

and a 9010, which was labelled a29.

Neither one bricked

opti 380 and 780 are still listed as "in process", 580 not even listed yet - amd/ati.

UPDATE: 20180415 380 and 780 no longer on list either,, so it looks now like 790 and 980 are as far back as it goes

Also, here is a link to Stephane Lesimple's kernel checker script on github:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/speed ... checker.sh

That script is also included in a debian package:

https://packages.debian.org/stretch-bac ... wn-checker

The article at the link I included in my original post was updated on 30 may 2019. If you have a Dell computer you might want to take a look to see if a new BIOS update is available for your system.
