Beta testers for inxi version 3.0.0 wanted

Hi Puppy users. I figure that you are more likely to have old, or otherwise currently untested hardware, so you might find some issues others have missed so far.

I'm working on the new 3.0.0 release of inxi. The development branch is called pinxi, so you can run pinxi and inxi together to compare etc. Once all the bugs and issues that are going to be found are found, the pinxi branch will move to inxi master and become inxi 3.0.0. Pinxi is a full rewrite, in Perl5, of inxi.

I want to release version 3.0.0 of inxi with no real bugs, at least as few as possible, and as many improvements over inxi 2.3.56 as possible.

I"m probably now in my final week of beta testing, but I'd like if other distros would give it a spin and see if there are any errors, bugs, issues, glitches, etc.

The only feature that is not totally complete is RAID, but I expect that to be done by today. Once there are no active issues or bugs, pinxi will move to inxi 3.0.0, or maybe inxi 2.9.01.

Of particular interest to me is ARM testing and RAID, those can always use more work.

Note that pinxi/inxi will respect all existing user configurations, no changes will be required, and all short form args for normal options are the same, only now there are also long form args for everything as well, which means any tools that use inxi should see few changes, though you want to check that to make sure.

There's an enhanced debugger as well, called with --debug 21 (leaves tar.gz data file on your system) or --debug 22 (removes all debugging data after automatic upload), which is helping a lot with debugging issues.

The most useful testing command is: pinxi -zv8

-zv8 is basically everything it can do, so any bugs will show there if they exist, plus the -z output filter.

What is inxi? What does it do for me? Why do I have to have it?

inxi is command line tool for hardware info.
I remember using it in some pup. But don't remember which.
Do pups have perl5 or have to load dev sfs?

Fewer dependencies, Perl

Just to be clear, the new inxi is Perl, not Bash/Gawk.

As a result, the entire set of dependencies inxi had, bash, gawk, sed, tr, grep, all those things, are removed, and replaced with one single dependency, Perl 5.x 5.08 or newer.

So there's a major difference there. However, you can see if there are any issues by simply installing pinxi, and then running it. If it runs, it's all good. If not, it needs Perl.

I've made a real point of avoiding any modules not in Perl core modules, so all that's required is the barebones Perl install, Perl + core modules, that is, which in most distros is just Perl.

Terry H, thanks for testing. If you compare inxi bash/gawk and inxi perl (aka beta name pinix), re time, you'll see one of the differences using perl makes:

time inxi -v7
time pinxi -v7

My systems usually give me around 2x faster or more for pinxi than inxi, which considering pinxi is doing quite a bit more than inxi does, is saying a something re the benefits of using Perl instead of the mutant bash/gawk i've used for almost 10 years now.

This is a big difference on old hardware, on my old pentium mmx 200 mghz laptop, inxi -v7 takes about 23 seconds to run, and pinxi -v7 only about 12 seconds. Obviously on newer hardware it's much less.

The repos require the data to add them, if it's a file, the path and file name of the file, and a sample file. Once I get that data, it doesn't take me too long to add a distro repo handler.

I'm pretty close to release, so far I'm only seeing missing repo data from the distros I'm asking to test it. I forgot the -z, I'll update my initial post, thanks.

I've just gotten the last bits of RAID working so pinxi is now just waiting for final beta testers, and any last minute thing, like adding repos for distros that don't show up, fixing last minute issues, etc.

On Fatdog64 -721 I had to make the perl script executable.
I ran it with time command, I don't have inxi to compare it with though.
My PC is not old either. Hope this helps.

Testers who got the failure to load error can update pinxi and try it again, it doesn't require that module now.

Version 2.9.00-0423-p should correct the failure to import a core module. Puppy is the second distro I've come across that has removed a core module from standard core modules, I can kind of understand it with Puppy since small size is critical, it was less forgiveable with redhat, who really had no excuse.

I've switched that module to use a cascading set of tests, ending in using hostname command.

Technically I'd suggest that puppy packagers of inxi add that module to the dependencies because it's more likely to succeed, but if puppy ships with the command 'hostname' then it should all be fine.

Perl without core modules?

It looks like maybe stock Puppy ships without core features for Perl, that's not something I can fix. glob is a required tool, it can't work without it. I can work around individual core modules missing like Sys::Hostname but I can't work around actual core features not being present. Perl without core features/modules isn't very useful, so I'll leave this up to Puppy packagers, and make a note about the issue. Glob isn't a module, it's a function in Perl, it's part of perl itself, so if that is missing, there's nothing I can do beyond suggest the required devx package is added as a dependency of inxi in Puppy.

perdido, your example shows two possible bugs, first, a failure to show a charge of 0, that's an easy mistake to make in Perl, that should be corrected in 2.9.00-424-p

Second is something I've seen in two sets of output, and I can probably fix if someone whose pinxi optical drives show:

/dev/scd0 /dev/scd1 and so on. Those are links to the real /dev locations, and I can tell from the following what is happening there if you paste and run the following code in a terminal, and then show me the output:

For what its worth, the drives in puppy linux are in /mnt/ and not /dev/

pinxi runs fine OOTB against Stretch pup 7.5 and also the new bionic pup alpha, it doesn't require any interventions for perl. As shown above It doesn't run against slack based puppies as is.

As I have modern PC's the 'time' for pinxi vs inxi, is quicker, but inxi runs in under 3 seconds, so not that noticeable.

As for running with the devx. Puppy ships in basic format minus the tool chain and other development utilities and libraries. These are contained
in a squash file system file that can be loaded and unloaded on the fly as required to do development functions.

As for the repositories details, it would be best answered by a developer.

scalar is another core feature. The error messages people post are showing the first thing that makes the compilation fail. so some people had a missing Sys::Hostname some missing core feature glob, your example is missing core feature scalar.

While I can't comment on the wisdom of removing core features from a language, given Puppy's unique position as a very small distro, the fact is, it's not reasonable to expect any Perl program to work without Perl built in functions.

perdido, it does indeed make a difference re /mnt, or /dev mounts, or it may make a difference, to be on the safe side I tried filtering out mnt and media, but technically the data it's working on can't have /mnt in it unless the result you posted had been /mnt/sr0 not sr0 so I can't actually see where that's failing, but I tried a small fix just on the off chance that is the cause. I believe the /mnt thing is where the cd mounts however, and isn't related to /dev, which is where the kernel itself puts those identifiers.

Terry H, I had no idea that puppy was built with different core distro components, that's interesting.

Thanks for clarifying that. I'll have to leave the packagers to sort out those details.

On very old hardware, just FYI, the speed difference is very noticeable, on one ancient machine I have, it's about 23 seconds for inxi vs 12 seconds for pinxi, and pinxi is doing a lot more work internally.
